234 years and the War Cicada.

I am 28 and becoming very aware at an ever increasing pace of the world around me. Today June 1 2008 was one of those leaps of knowledge and I want to share it with my fellow Patriots here on the Daily Paul.

For some dumb reason after having too much to drink last night I decided today when I woke up to plant my first ever garden which I had been putting off for quite some time. (Thanks Martfuncher for the garden thread) Regardless for some reason I decided to do it on the muggiest Kentucky Ohio Vally afternoon yet this year.

Hailing from a rural part of the state and being near a forest I was deafened by the Cicada's that have emerged as I worked today.

http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=the-17-year-itch

While getting the tilling machine ready my mother mentioned to me about it being the year of the War Cicada because they have a W on the back of their wings when you look at it. Interesting I gruffled as lack of hydration and looking at the daunting task ahead worked through my mind.

Almost as penance I sweated the night before out of me plowing with a unruly gas powered tiller through Johnson grass and red clay all to the scull rattling hum of cicadas all around me. During this time I thought to my self good God I couldn't imagine doing this by horse and plow. This thing is gas powered and is kicking my ass and on top of that what's the deal with these Cicada's?

As I took a break and got some much needed water I said to my mom, wow our ancestors had a hell of a time didn't they, I couldn't imagine using a horse plow to do this work. It was then some where in our conversation my mother bestowed upon me the knowledge about my 6th great grandfather Samuel Pottinger on my mothers side who fought in the Revolutionary War along side the likes of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington as well as Hendrick Banta my 5th great Grandfather on my fathers side who also was in the war.

My mother knows much about our family's genealogy and is a Member of the DAR. Daughters of the American Revolution.
She always told me this stuff but until today I never was truly interested and most times could care less. I guess the hard work coupled with a hungover malaze made me realize what nothing else could.

So as I was about to go back to tilling the soil I was hit with an epiphany that which was the like of water being splashed in my hot sweat drenched face. Here I am in the year of the War Cicada. Almost fourteen 17 year cycles removed from 1784 becoming part of the major reawakening of Constitutional freedom today 234 years later.

It was amazing to realize my family was a part of the war that began this once great nation and here I am today realizing I am a part of the new Revolution. The whole time never knowing that my family was part of the original one. So as I started up the tiller and gripped down to begin again I realized how hard it was for my ancestors and how tough the fight ahead will be if we plan to keep our Constitutional Freedoms.

Smiling I wiped the sweat from my brow got back to plowing and wondered if the cicadas were as loud that year when they signed the Constitution after having broken the grip of tyranny.

ci·ca·da

Date: 14th century
: any of a family (Cicadidae) of homopterous insects which have a stout body, wide blunt head, and large transparent wings and the males of which produce a loud buzzing noise usually by stridulation.
No insects, no birds. No insects, no pollination.

There are better ways than "roundup".

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

Do the math!

Your great epiphany was probably part of your drunken stupor. Eleven multiplied by seventeen is 187, not 234. Lay off the booze.

It's hard to think it's been almost a year

Since I wrote this. I just finished tilling my garden again this year..
all the darn rain in KY made the ground hard before I could get the crops in.

Much has changed.

I'm sure much will change in the next year.

Some info on Cicadas

Did you know...that if things get really bad, cicadas make an excellent meal, and are dosile enough to catch and (from what i've heard) taste pretty good stir fried? Maybe as a survival tactic, you can stir up some cicadas with your vegetables.

Did you also know that they have a 17 year life cycle because 17 is a prime number? If they had 16 or 18, it would be easier for a species to prey on them but 17 makes it tough. They'll probably outlast people in the Ohio River Valley.

i live in the Ohio Valley myself...the damn things are driving me nuts, so i've been reading about them.

What do you think about the war on drugs?
How about Operation Wall Street?
Shout it today!

Ok now I'm drawing the line

LOL.. I would rather live off my grapefruit everyday. I have hundreds of trees and can't find anyone to even pick them to give them away, sadly enough. Are these things the same as locust that are supposed to be the plague the Mormans had?

Some more information

Didn't know if you saw this, but now peer reviewed, major engineering journals are questioning the official 9/11 story. Here's the link: http://www.bentham-open.org/pages/content.php?TOCIEJ/2008/00...
(Here's a hint, don't just read the title)
Also, the investigator of that study revealed on air that he's done analysis on debris at the 9/11 scene and he said it closely resembles the government sponsored nanothermite. Here's a link I've found: http://pdf.aiaa.org/jaPreview/JPP/2007/PVJA24915.pdf

Oh wow.

New info! I have never heard of nanothermite. Thanks man I'll spread it around.

Oruval

I love the story. I really love this post. It actually hits home for me. I am in an area of the war cecada. I do labor work.

Obviously there are thoughts going through my mind regarding doubts about your actual deeds today because of your proven un credibility on speaking truth, but I could actually relate. I have hands where people know exactly what I do when they shake them. This appreciation has not gone unnoticed by me, but was heightened by the post.

The only thing that I wish to add:

I will take this reflection as my own. If you had any credibility in my eyes, I would attribute it to you in my own personal brain.

Do you see what you have done?

We all have our roles.

What is your malfunction?

Why didn't you just come out and give me a big F-U instead of euphemising my thread to death.

I know what you're hinting at and this is getting old.

Hey guess what 9/11 was an inside job.

Deal with it.

And I call bullshit on you supposedly being somehow married to my family. My mom does geanology and I have been in the search for your ass with no luck you damn troll.

This is what I was talking about.

I did like the post though and continue to reflect on it, wether you actaully toiled or not, we will never know.

Couldn't stand my post being positive could you. Look I know all you are trying to do is get me mad. Because of this pray we never meet for if we do it will not be enjoyable for you. And yes I did toil you spinless wimp.

Good luck with your garden

I just hope those Cicadas don't eat the stuff you are planting after all of that hard work. I wonder if they are part of the locust family. Interesting how your family tree goes back to the original Revolution.

Great tale Oruval

We have wine grape vineyards. I can relate.
The thing is, back in the day, they had to do it all over again every year, year after year. Though a well used and well trained horse powered plow would be much easier than wrestling a heavy, noisy, stinking, gas-powered machine, if you ask me, and yes, we have horses. Also the typical, heavy implements of misery.

I am DAR, too, and feel the same reverence and awe for my ancestor's inumerable sacrifices, and work in the name of Freedom and Liberty.

The reward is in the harvest, worth every blister and drop of blood and sweat.

Thanks!

Cool.

I am in the process of reading some old papers my great grandmother had dealing with how to plant grapes. Kentucky has a much limestone which changes the flavor so you have to condition the soil. But the climate and terrain where i am at in the Ohio valley is identical to northern Italy.

In my area, a lot of people have horses/plows

If you have 4 (or more) well trained horses, and know what you are doing, and good equipment, you should be able to plow several acres in one day, with less work at any given time than the tiller requires. It is somewhat easier to do your plowing/tilling around March, as soon as the ground dries out/ and before the grass/weeds grow much.

just so you know, and acre is 43,560 square feet, or about 209 ft by 209 ft.

I'm not involved in farming this year because it's the sabbath year, (you can read about the sabbath year in Leviticus 25)

If you decide at the end of this summer that your garden wasn't worthwhile, please consider that the bible might be correct. The Christians rarely follow the bible, so don't misunderstand what I'm saying.

I think the reason many (It seemed like you were included based on some other posts you've done recently) people oppose the bible is because the churches say they follow it, than do the opposite.

I also think that the reason many people oppose politics is because many politicians oppose the constitution.

To me, there is a remarkable similarity.

Do you know who Carl Sagan is?

And yes the bible is nothing more to me than a Pagan book based on Astro-theology. At the end of the year I'll let you know how my crops do.

Do you understand Auras?

how can the bible be a pagan book?

In the years after Moses, the creator is said to have told the leaders to slaughter all who worship idols. basically, that's all pagans.

It also teaches a non-pagan creation story,
about a flood to kill all pagans/immoral people,
about a bunch of polygamist patriarchs,
about slavery in Egypt, and escape,
about a set of moral laws which, when followed, make a society a good place to live,
about the history of how early attempts to follow it had some successes, but didn't turn out to well, because the people didn't follow the laws well,
about how the land needed it's Sabbath Year, so they were removed from their land so it could rest (because many hadn't followed it),
about various prophecies around the time *they* returned,
about what happened when *they* returned,
along with related non-pagan poetry.

(that was a brief overview of the Old Testament). Where I noted *they*, I meant to imply some of the children of Israel, as most never returned (the northern Kingdom of Israel, mentioned after Solomons' death)

The New Testament is about:
A savior born, raised, baptised.
He cured the sick, raised the dead, fed the hungry, and spoke many words of wisdom. The Government and the (jewish) elitists got tired of him, and had him killed. He could have easily stopped them, but instead laid down his life as a sacrifice for repentant sinners.
Acts is about how the resulting religious group got started,
And the letters are exactly that, except the context is largely unknown, 1900 years later.

Christianity as you see it today is based upon Pagans joining the believers, and bringing lots of Pagan baggage with them. The government made the changes permanent (until recently, and then only a small minority have quit).
Now, many people can read and have bibles, so most sermons are a few verses out of context to encourage the apathetic listener to believe that all of the Pagan baggage is biblical.

In response to your question, I've heard of Carl Sagan, but I don't know what he says, or who he is.
