WASHINGTON (CNN) – Texas Rep. Ron Paul announced Thursday he is suspending his bid for the Republican presidential nomination to focus his time on building an organization to help recruit and elect “limited government Republicans.”

“We want to elect constitutionalists, limited government Republicans across the country at the state and federal level,” said Paul spokesman Jesse Benton.

The congressman will speak about his political plans at the Texas Republican State Convention being held in Houston. Late Thursday afternoon, Paul launched a Web site for his new organization where he explained the decision to suspend his presidential campaign and form “Ron Paul Campaign for Liberty.”

“With the primary season now over, the presidential campaign is at an end,” Paul said in the letter. “But the larger campaign for freedom is just getting started.”

Arizona Sen. John McCain locked up the GOP nomination back in March, but unlike his fellow Republicans running for president, Paul never abandoned his White House bid.

Paul’s decision to leave the race is an acknowledgment he had no chance of winning the GOP nomination. But even in loss, Paul is one of a handful of candidates who walked away from this presidential contest a winner. His presidential campaign had a broad base of support that included traditionally fiscal and socially conservative Republicans to young people who were angry about the U.S. decision to wage war against Iraq.

The Internet helped to tie together his group of supporters who joined the “Ron Paul Revolution.”

“The work of the Campaign for Liberty will take many forms,” Paul wrote in the letter posted on his Web site. “We will educate our fellow Americans in freedom, sound money, non-interventionism, and free markets. We’ll have our own commentaries and videos on the news of the day. I’ll work with friends I respect to design materials for homeschoolers."

He added, “Politically, we’ll expand the great work of our precinct leader program. We’ll make our presence felt at every level of government, where just a few people with our level of enthusiasm can make a world of difference. We’ll keep an eye on Congress and lobby against legislation that threatens us. We’ll identify and support political candidates who champion our great ideas against the empty suits the party establishments offer the public.”

Paul will not endorse McCain, unless the Arizona senator “wants to change some of his positions,” Benton said. But Benton added that this effort in no way is intended to hurt McCain in November.

Trust AP?

What a farce!

In this post, we have a Ron Paul supporter falling into the typical well-laid paradigm-trap of quoting an unnamed source at MSNBC (jointly run by banksters MSFT Bill Gates and GE Jeffrey Immelt) who, in turn, quotes another unnamed source at AP (otherwise known as the "un-Accountable-Press").

Why would you ever trust anything the un-Accountable Press spins out?

The "AP", a fourth-estate participant, that's supposedly "working" in your public interest, while clearly profiting off someone's interest, offers no byline, no feedback loop, and no accountability.

Are you encouraged by AP to respond with your American citizen's view about ANYTHING it reports?

Hello?

Does "AP" invite discussion or debate about its content?

Hello?

This rant is not just about this specific RP story. It's about the general systemic spin-inducing corruptness that is the AP. Its lack of accountability is perverse.

Answer me these questions: Did Dick Cheney author this AP article? Or was it his speechwriter? Did McCain author this AP article? Was it Hillary? The answer is: you don't know. And that, in a nutshell, is how the AP wants it to be.

A potential solution? For those energized enough to do so, write a quick letter to Gates and Immelt. Tell them you and all of your friends are discontinuing purchasing Microsoft and GE products until AP publishes stories that include the authors' names, and a method of posting discussion and debate about their stories similar to how real news sources do.

No, I trust Ron Paul.... he

No, I trust Ron Paul.... he said it on the new campaign website, and he said it this morning on CNN American morning.

"libertarian-leaning Republicans"

Can you find a quote by Ron Paul that he's now helping "libertarian-leaning Republicans" as the press is headlining?

Maybe it's my fault I didn't spell out my message clearly enough.

The question is not whether Ron Paul has altered his direction.

The question is whether you and a million plus other readers of this site recognize that your real power in this culture is in your personal spending commitments.

Are you watching FOX since it dissed RP several months ago?

Are you spending your ever-disintegrating FRN's at places like Red Lobster and Burger King that advertise on FOX?

Committment to Liberty is not a part-time thing. Committment to principles is the whole enchilada.

In this culture, you have the POWER by telling businesses what you agree and disagree with about their policies.

for the quote... I believe I

for the quote... I believe I saw something like that on the new campaign website...

and as far as the other stuff goes, I've never watched FOX, and I never go to Red Lobster, Burger King, etc...

well, I have watched Fox, but only when Ron Paul has been on it, and most of the time it was in a youtube video....

Thanks aVoR

It's not about you, friend. It's about millions of liberty-loving Americans. RP is correct in his assessment of the American polity in general.

In the Revolution, A Manifesto, RP argues that folks have become so dumbed-down by the process over several generations, that we no longer know how to debate issues. Why? Because issues haven't and continue to not be presented for debate by supposed "leaders".

Is AP for us or against us? Thoughts?

on the AP.... they're

on the AP.... they're either incredibly stupid, or incredibly evil... I'm willing to be merciful and give them the benefit of the doubt.

If you still doubt the

If you still doubt the story, Jesse Benton has confirmed it as has Ron Paul himself on the new website.

Hey guys, take a look at

Hey guys, take a look at those first couple of lines, suspending is a whole lot different than actually quitting the race. Hang tight, and get active in the campaign for liberty-our leader is not letting us down, he knows exactly what he is doing!!! What a brilliant man!!!

I suppose so...

but it doesn't have the same feeling about it anymore. Initially, it hit me as a shock.

In God We Trust!

Just sit down and pour yourself a nice strong cup of coffee and take a deep breath, exhale and relax. Then watch Ron tonight at http://www.justin.tv/ronpaul2008

This man is not a quitter, he's a real fighter and a smart one at that.

We've only just begun to fight! Chin up!

suspending

president ron paul
~peace

~peace

you know, call me

you know, call me delusional, but I've thought the same thing... that maybe Ron Paul has a plan... that's why he keeps having his rallies, his own convention, this new website, etc. maybe, he's "campaigning"?

EXACLTY

what I was thinking - especially after reading the letter he posted on the Campaign For Liberty site.
It's pretty genius actually. It reads as if he is injecting a NEW campaign --- or just rolling his presidential campaign over to a liberty one; Not necessarily ending one. Genius campaigning if you think about it.

I hate to be the "Bob Barr

I hate to be the "Bob Barr Troll" but the CNN Political Ticker also posted this about Ron Paul's support (not endorsement) of Bob Barr:
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/06/12/paul-people-...

http://bobbarrforums.com

I am voting for Barr and Ron Paul already said he hopes he does

I am voting for Barr and Ron Paul already said he hopes he does well, gets into the debates and spreads the message. I look for Ron Paul to campaign for Barr now

Not gonna happen. He's

Not gonna happen. He's already said he's not going to endorse him or anybody else.

... then don't be the "Bob

... then don't be the "Bob Barr Troll". I can't believe on this day you would shill for Barr. How tacky.

Once Again...

Nystrom said it himself, the enthusiasm DIED when Ron Paul sent out the there will be no 3rd party run letter!!! Yes, there will always be the core libertarian minded people like you and me. That amounts to a very small percentage nationwide. It's the people who fell off the bandwagon and went back to sleep when the race ended that we have squandered. Americans love the big game, the Superbowl. At this point the freedom movement lacks the very thing it needs most, a team(PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES) for the 2008 election. Am I wrong?

If Dr. Paul is not going to take the initiative and strongly endorse a candidate for President 2008, then I guess we're back to square 1 on that front. An open letter to Jesse Ventura is the most logical next step.
VENTURA 2008

You're right, but I'll

You're right, but I'll probably support Chuck Baldwin.

Ventura, IMO, must run on the Reform Party ticket, and Ross Perot's money will be needed to revive it. Otherwise, all the wishful thinking in the world won't make him into a presidential candidate.

The reform party does have a plan but i'm barely reading a pulse.

Wednesday, May 28, 2008. NOMINATING CONVENTION! Please note that this is not a formal Call to Convention, which will be approved and issued by a licensed Parliamentarian in the next week or two.

The Reform Party USA is very pleased to announce that the 2008 RPUSA Nominating Convention will be held July 18-20, 2008 in Dallas, Texas! The formal Call to Convention will contain information regarding transportation to/from local airports, hotel information, and a general schedule of events.

Events

July 18-20, 2008 RPUSA National Convention.

TENTATIVE CONVENTION AGENDA:

It is critical to keep in mind that, unlike the choreographed and scripted conventions of the major parties, Reform Party conventions are 100% subject to the will of the seated delegates. This means that while we can set a proposed agenda, it's up to the delegates whether they choose to abide by it, or to move to business however they feel is best. That said, the following rough agenda is likely:

Friday July 18 Afternoon/Evening
-Credentialing of Delegates.

Saturday July 19: All Day
-Nomination of Presidential and Vice-Presidential Candidates
-Adoption of Revised Constitution
-Election of National Officers and Regional Representatives
-Platform Revisions
-Party Building and Planning Sessions

Sunday July 20: Morning
-National Committee Meeting
-Party Building and Planning Sessions
