Riddle from Minarchist 6/12/08

When you first heard of me I'm a girl you might think,
especially considering I would almost certainly be dressed in pink.
But it was my Amadeus who danced, oh how he danced!
I could do nothing, for I like Salieri too was tranced.
The English weasel.
he said I was a diesel.
I had the talent, they said
but he had the determination I would dread.
In 2003 I was on the coast,
but it was back in 97 when of all the others I made toast.
After that second was the best I could I do,
Even when to the rules I was not being true.

Marco Pantani
The pink refers to he jersey color of the leader of the Giro, which Pantani is most famous for.
Not sure who the english weasal was.
In 2003 he checked himself into a clinic in Northern Italy on the coast maybe.
1998 tuur de france winner.

Ugh. Another error!
Outstanding answer. Unfortunately, I made another error in the riddle.
It was in 1997 that this person "of the others made toast", not in 1998. Sorry!

Then it would probably be Ulrich.

There ya go
His first name is Jan, so at least an American is likely to think he is a girl.
The pink was the color of his main team jersey, Telekom (later T-Mobile).
In 2003 he was on a team called Team Coast.
He won the Tour in 1997, was out in 98 and 99 (when Armstrong won his first of 7 in a row), and in 2000 became the perennial second to Armstrong.
Many said that Ullrich had more raw talent than Armstrong, but Armstrong would win because he was more determined (and thus disciplined to train harder and more effectively, etc.).
Salieri would have been the greatest composer of his time, if it were not for Mozart.
Ullrich would have been the greatest cyclist of his time, if it were not for Armstrong.
English announcer Paul Sherwen would often liken Ullrich to a diesel because he could not accelerate on the climbs like Armstrong could, though he could maintain a fierce pace.

No
Sheryl Crow was not the Salieri as compared to Lance Armstrong...

Okay, big hint
Amadeus in the riddle is a reference to Lance Armstrong (who was described by announcer Paul Sherwen as one who "danced on his pedals" when he accelerated away in the mountains).

Correction and hint
I might be mistaken about the "South African weasel".
Apparently he's English.
So it should say "The English weasel".
And... his (the English weasel - not the answer to the riddle) name is Paul.

Can't get a lead on this one...
I am at a loss. Can't find anything.
This one is really hard.... I'll have to look at it with a fresh mind tomorrow I guess.
I never had a hero as a child. I've never had a hero as an adult. At 45 years of age I finally have a hero, and his name is Ron Paul.
So glad..
So glad you did another one! What a nice surprise, thanks!
I want to finish Mr. Bean's Holiday on HBO first, and then watch Ron Paul up the road in Houston!
I'll give it shot a bit later, but again, Thanks!
