The new Internet: Paulnet
Submitted by silentboom on Tue, 06/17/2008 - 09:13
Last night I had a dream about freeing us from network providers who could be bought and turn over our records and internet information to the government. I had a dream about a truly peer to peer internet where each home was an independent node who could anonymously join his neighbors wirelessly city wide and countrywide. We talk about getting off the grid, what if we each were completely independent of the grid and the fascist providers who would turn our information over to corrupt security agencies. Now could be the time to start setting up an independent wireless framework that could start to grow as slowly or quickly as we can sustain. It doesn't have to be limited to fcc regulated radio waves either...... Ideas?

if someone who posted below has a doable plan...
that can connect computers either hard lined(probably not) or wireless(most likely) please lets get a website up or at the least a packet of instructions that could be emailed to people so they could start linking their computers... it might start slow...(and maybe not great for surfing the internet,,,but in essence we would have our very own semi- secure email communications platform....for semi- secure communications...
ISP's confirm '2012: The Year The Internet Ends'
JM
Update: Bell Canada and TELUS (formerly owned by Verizon) employees officially confirm that by 2012 ISP's all over the globe will reduce Internet access to a TV-like subscription model, only offering access to a small standard amount of commercial sites and require extra fees for every other site you visit. These 'other' sites would then lose all their exposure and eventually shut down, resulting in what could be seen as the end of the Internet.

It is not just a dream .. I have been trying to spread the word
It is not just a dream .. I have been trying to spread the word for years now... including on this site...
http://research.microsoft.com/mesh/
It is a free download from Microsoft... however it is still not an easy enough setup for most people to do it... but there are other companies selling stuff that makes it easier... but they are not free...
very good info
Thank you, this is excellent information...exactly the kind of stuff we could add to our discussions such as gold and gardens. Information and communication are crucial to our movement. Decentralizing as much as possible. So the term is mesh, makes sense.

Dr. Paul cured my apathy
Ron Paul was right
Ever heard of freenet?

That may serve your purposes. It's very slow though.

It's a good idea
It's a good idea, but it uses the existing infrastructure. I was trying to think of some way to circumvent the existing providers. It would be slow at first as all computers would have to pass alot of data, but the more people the faster it could be and less data each would have to pass. Like a torrent file being downloaded. But we would need some long range wireless. I read about some which support a range of 5 miles, and there is Wimax but I would have to do some research. Someone must be working on something.

Me too, weird
I've been thinking a lot about this lately as well. That's kind of weird.
I wouldn't go wireless though. It's way to easy to hack and can't provide the reliable connection speeds at distance. If you really wanted to own all of the technology you could go open source all the way and start running land lines to neighbors as a testbed. In the mean time you would essentially be your own small ISP that hooks into the internet. If you really wanted to own your own internet it would be house to house and only what people offer from their computers would be available. A big independent LAN. After all that is what the internet still is just on a massive scale.
You'd need some serious technicians to get this done. It's not an impossible idea. It would take years to accomplish.
Wireless is fine.....no hacking due to mac addresses
You would have to start in a well poplulated town, and do a controlled roll-out

well
I'm a network administrator,I did some quick searches and some of these products claim a range of 5 miles (optimally). It sounds like we would need to start it in a community and expand from there. http://www.wirelessnetworkproducts.com/index.asp?PageAction=...
I know there was talk of Wimax which had a supposed range of 30 miles. I would have to look into that more. When I think of a structure, it's something like a bittorrent setup, but there are so many options that are possible once the computers can "talk".

The new internet
JM
From all indications this new internet 2 could possibly mean the end of the internet as we know it. If all the ISP's buy in to this, (limiting bandwidth, and providing access to only a few corporate sites), then this could mean we wouldn't be able to post on this site and for that matter anywhere. It seems there are factions in our Gov. that wants to dismantle the current form of the internet. That means our free speech would be limited, or removed from the internet. No more alternate news sites, just MSM propaganda and spin.
You might have a good idea here. I'm sure there are many people here that could explain to us how to circumvent this action, if it comes to pass. Any and all clarification on this subject would be appereciated.
