February of 2009, all television broadcasting must be done in digital, imposed by new FCC ruling. Therefore all civilians who wish to watch a little tube (for those who still wish to) must snag themselves a digital receivers. Why exactly is this law taking place?

Once all the TV is digital

They can spew their video propaganda brainwashing across the internet much more easily, even reaching as far as the new nifty, law immunized spying telecom company gadget- the equally digital Iphone. Your little hand held personal brainwashing/bugging/tracking device. (should you need an emergency therapy session or should they need to know where you are or what you are saying). The only place they haven't been able to conquer yet with simple websites. That's my half serious guess. That puzzle piece fits like a glove considering the close timing of the iphone release and institution of digital TV along with FISA, the Patriot Act, HR 1955, etc.

A couple reasons

First, to free up the analog bandwith. Second, to get people to buy new tv's. Third, to offer a program so the government looks like it's helping you in the process by offering there tuner coupons. (which could cost the government up to 8 billion dollars he everyone claims and uses their coupons). And last, but not least, to keep their favorite propaganda tool, the television, ahead of the uncontrollable internet.

no worries!

And congrats on the exciting news. I wish the best for your son and his wife. Sorry if I came off as impatient, I should not of been so opine. My home internet connection is down, but ill check up on that link soon enough. Thanks again!

Got those links by chance?

ArmaniAce: Ok, I found one additional link which gives a

fair overall history of the move. It's several pages, but worth reading if you're interested in the developement of the subject.

ArmaniAce, please accept my apologies. I got a call

from my son to let me know that my daughter in law was in labor, so the wife and I rushed out to the hospital. Tonight, we've got a brand new grandson. 8lbs, 11 oz, 19in, brn hair and eyes and he's got the same crooked toe as his father and grandpa. Came home and downloaded about a bunch of pictures from the digital camera and then went online and happened back to the dailypaul site. Here are a couple of links that will give you references to the congressional act of 1996 ordering the FCC to sellout the frequency spectrum for analog TV and move every station to digital.

I'm going to take some time tomorrow to look for references to the earlier act from the Reagan administration which started all of this in order to force the FCC to become self-supporting. I'll post those just as soon as I can run them down. RIght now, I've got to blast pics of the grandson all over the country. :) Best regards.

Congratulations, Grandpa!

Time for you to get to some broadcasting of your own -- of your beautiful new baby grandson!! :D Hm, maybe that's what the old broadcast channels can be repurposed for (ha!).

Just Money, Just for profits

TV works in something like the 80 MHz-100MHz range. The lower the frequency the farther single will carry. Digital programing makes no since, except for some one to profit from it. cell phones and other wireless work on a frequencies of 400MHZ plus to moving up the Freq range to around 1.2 G Hz. maybe higher. The higher the Freq the more you can do on the freq, like send photos, emails, data. But the higher the freq the shorter the transmitting distance. That is why every where you look you got cell towers. For the Government to make TV signal go all digital, their is no logical reason, escept for profits.

it's no different...

than anything else in America, it's all about money, and greed, and most of it is coming from the government we feed with our tax-payer dollars. What if we don't feed the beast anymore, will they stop???

I think they sold

all the broadband channels to different agencies and made a huge profit in doing so, and this left the digitial field wide open, thus more profits.

You're exactly right. It means more power for the same geo

coverage. Just in terms of increased utilities cost, try to factor that into the effect of advertising costs alone. As of, I think about 1999, there was exactly one station in the country (in N.Y. as I recall) that had actually applied for a digital license with the FCC. Interesting subject for me.

i would

Appreciate some good links, always nice to do a little reading when I get home from work. I was under the impression that the FCC "lent" the airwaves as they see fit. But I would not be suprised one bit if certain if not all commercial
frequencies were auctioned off in the past. Pretty pathetic that the airwaves are being bought and sold in the first place, as anyone could own the physical rights to them.

In the earlier part of the 20th century, the courts were

applying existing case law in order to resolve conflicts in the use of frequency spectrum and were well along in the process of establishing legal principles based upon conventional property rights rules and judgements. It wasn't until the Federal Radio Commission (forerunner of the FCC) came along and (in the hands of a director named: Herbert Hoover) simply grabbed all of the frequency spectrum for themselves and proceeded to "license" it to corporate entities. So the airwaves started out as private property, treated much like homesteaded land in the 19th century, until the government decided that they would take it. Now they control who gets it and, through various rule-making procedures and with the backing of Congress, they can also decide what gets or doesn't get broadcast.

Dr. Paul is for privatization of the airwaves

He disagrees with public ownership concept of the airwaves. He thinks the FCC should be abolished.

..in case you didn't know.

Dude, I was arguing against that several years ago

when they first proposed this. No one would pay any attention or cared. Now it's too late.

It's a good question why it's taking place. Supposedly it was to free up some spectrum, but I would be surprised if Congress was not lobbied by businesses interests who stood to profit by forcing everyone to buy equipment and broadcasters to switch to hi-def.

Just think of all the money that could have been spent on something more urgent, based on what the market actually demands, instead of the government forcing everyone to expend resources on a luxury. That's the tragedy of this, but few people seem to care.

This is "central economic planning" - the government guiding the allocation of resources instead of the market. We're on the road to complete socialism or economic fascism, if the tide doesn't change.

thats outragous

So you saw this bill grow from its infancy and preliminary stages and no one at the time payed any heed. You would think that someone, in the financal committee in particular, would set this unnecessary maneuver aside given the circumstances. Guess it goes to show you where our beloved congress' priorities lie. This leads me to further believe that the motive behind this action was purely money based.

It IS outrageous

Television broadcasters are required by law to broadcast in high definition by that date, forcing them to buy expensive equipment (or go out of business if they can't afford it) and forcing us to buy new equipment. The government is FORCING A LUXURY on us and making us pay for it! It's obscene.

The economy was in a bubble at the time and looked like there was no end in sight to economic expansion when they first proposed and enacted this regulation, so that's probably why this was able to get through without protest.

Too many

signals. Used to be just tv and radio. Now you have cell phones, lap tops, wireless microphones, Everything has to go digital.

If I were a conspiracy theorist I would....

Investigate the digital signal layers to make sure that they have not added mind control to the airways. Likethe kids that had caesar's while watching the cartoon. But I would say it is more to help televison companies force everyone to buy new higher priced programming, and add a lot more on for HDTV. Short of those two I have no idea....lol

Who cares

To hell with TV, I just moved and am NOT getting any cable hooked up. I wish everyone would cancel their cable, it would make the gov propagandists squirm :)

All tvs

I do'nt have cable. It will be for the tv itself.

they want the bandwidth

With "new technology" they can utilize the frequencies that are currently used for many things (cell phones, govt. communications, etc). The new broadcast signals will be on different frequencies consuming less bandwidth. I am sure there are many reasons other than what I have stated, but this is what they are saying. Look for an end to small tower tv broadcasting which is mostly christian tv, spanish tv, or other local programming (not having a national affiliate) because they can't afford the equipment to broadcast on the new airwaves.

free markets

This ruling came because the government does not understand the nature of the free market. We could have handled the transition to digital just fine without this if left to do it, but that's not the situation in which we find ourselves.

You ask "why". The law is taking place because the

frequency spectrum affected was auctioned off to private corporate interests back in the 80s.

How and why did that all

How and why did that all come about? Do you happen to know?

I will get a reference to a couple of articles that were

sent to me and post them for you.

yea

That's right, and on top of that, they're footing the bill just so people can get their converter box. It seems a lil eager on the FCCs behalf. I remember someone once telling me, aside from all the positive things that digital signals do, analog is still the way to go.

come and get your telescreen

I don't know why, but I think that'll be the end of my cable television days--I have to admit that I still watch sports programming. I have no interest in the government coupon to bring a telescreen (converter) into my home.

So they can fully control

So they can fully control the airwaves?

I dunno. It sounds way to spooky to me.

My husband can explain this better

something about airways are so crowded with signals the equipment demands digital signals. It used to be just tv and radio,Now you have cell phones and all kinds of other wireless stuff giving off signals. Not to mention big brother has to have a way to make sure they can watch all of us. lol K maybe not funny. But it not just for cable or satelite like some of you seem to think. It is ALL tvs.
