Political Training for 20-something RP PatriotsSubmitted by Treg on Tue, 06/24/2008 - 14:57
Are you thinking of running for something? Perhaps to be on your town council or city mayor? Are you thinking of a Congressional seat even?
Well take it from me, an old libertarian Patriot -- You are too young.
You do not have enough life experience
I love your ambition though.
Let me ask you, say you gain power and a position of authority, which would you do to shrink government? A raffle or an Auction? When it comes to selling off government / public assets, perhaps the best method is THE RAFFLE. The raffling off of government land or property does not bring in money to the state, thus does not grow the State. It gets the asset into the free market. The first thing the winner of the asset will do is sell it. And they will sell it to those who see its true highest and best use. The second best method is to have a public auction. The State does get the money, thus keeping the State larger than we desire. Furthermore, auctions open up whole areas of corruption possibilities. Who is allowed into the auction, what gets auctioned, does the State truly get paid in the end, etc. Russia's privatization was a flop, did you study why? A raffle is many times better, but the goal is the same.
Now, let me say this to all our young 20 something patriots.
You have a political agenda. That is fine. But you need to LEARN THE ART of POLITICS....without selling out your Political Agenda.
How can you both gain experience learning the Art of Politics, without "getting into politics perse?"
Answer: Your local Little League.
No Right-Left business there. No ideology. Just pure PEOPLE POLITICS. And let me tell you, its a real life lesson.
I submit to you that you --each of you should make it your goal to VOLUNTEER right now for the Little League in your town.
Think its easy?
If you are so ballsy to think of running for Mayor or Congress without any experience, try running for Little League President, without any experience. I doubt you will win.
You are young, so start from the bottom. First volunteer as an assistant coach, then go for head coach, then go for becoming a board Member, then, finally, go for being the President of the Little League. You will be the youngest volunteer among 30-something adults with children. These will be the very adults who you will be leading one day.
Now let me point out that you will learn Roberts Rules of Order, the Little League Constitution and Bylaws. You will learn about "budget battles" and how people handle and mishandle money. You will see and learn how people THINK about money they don't have, don't own, and how THEY know best on how to Spend that money. You learn how to raise money. You will learn who in your town has money. You will meet many people. You could not ask for a better Real Life Education in Real Raw Politics.
You will learn ALL THE MILLIONS of excuses why people Don't read the LL Constitution, follow the LL Bylaws, and simply make up their own rules, fail to follow thru. You will find people who sound good yet can't return the league's baseball equipment. You like someone who is "the most honest person in the world" and then find them with LL locker keys or perhaps with Little League funds in THEIR bank account. In a nutshell, you will learn REAL Politics and you will learn people.
Meanwhile you should study basic bookkeeping & accounting & study the DSMV for personality types and personality disorders. http://www.amazon.com/DSM-IV-Personality-Disorders-Diagnosis...
THEN, and only then, will you be Ready to jump into the world of Real Politics--that is with theory of government and ideologies and how to rule. The lessons you will have learned in Little League will teach you HOW TO READ PEOPLE, HOW TO GET THEM TO FOLLOW YOU...and how and why you should disregard their personal politics. This is a very crucial skill, a political skill of REAL importance.
Now while you are on your way to becoming elected Little League President and learning Real People Skills.... on the side Read As Many Libertarians Books as you possibly can. Start here:
Then do what most Libertarians never do: Shut up. Don't talk about it, don't mention libertarian theory at all. Your schooling at the local little league should SHOW you how unimportant to people this really is.
People look for leadership, "gravitas", charisma, energy, vision, honesty, kindness, and above all, themselves in you. The best politicians are mirrors, and when people look into a mirror, they make excuses. They will make them for you. The LP made them for Bob Barr. The dems for Obama. The Republicans for McCain. It is a very light quality, a skill, an ability to be everyones everyone. Its an ability to be me, when you are really you. Its "likability" in this "me society", which means you must be "like me" (but better). Its a quality of character that you will learn to project. Ron Paul projects it too, don't kid yourself he does not.
When your little league training is over,.....and after 2 or 3 years being the league president I would say its over, you are ready to move on to anything your heart desires. You know people now. You will have LEARNED REAL Politics without the political Left - Right ideology, and that is VERY VERY important to your skill set.
If you are reading this and you do not "get it" or appreciate how 'political' your neighborhood little league is, then you REALLY need to take this course. You may not like baseball or know much about it, but when did I ever say this was "about baseball"? Its not. Its about pure raw politics -- and being GOOD at it, gaining an Instinct for it, and being REAL GOOD at it. If you are un-athletic, a girl, or a minority, Even More So! It may not be "you", but since when did getting a real 4 year degree in real raw politics ever feel like you? It feels unnatural, and that is a good thing, but also your weakness. But once you have graduated yourself from LL, you will be ready for anything to come your way. You will have what we call "an instinct for it". You will know WHEN its time to let slip in your libertarian ideology that you have held back and in check for years, like a boxer holds back his right hook. You will rarely bring it out.
You will realize as Town Mayor, or State Governor, how very little it matters --the ideology, the Left Right divisions -- in the general populace on how they see things and view politics through their eyes. Your Little League presidency will show you that some may care about the little league constitution being followed, some will not. But most importantly you will see how people really tick. You will Know Politics, pure politics.
Thats my advice to the Young Patriots out there.
In Peace & Liberty,
Little League budgets come from sponsors and other volunteers who donate. These budgets are often very big. Ours was over $30,000. Take a course or two on book keeping and/or accounting. The fighting over the LL budget is a major life lesson ready and waiting for you. After you learn from these budget battles, you will be ready to take on the world.
