Vital Info to study: Political Ponerology and Psychopaths

What is REALLY wrong with our leaders?

For all of my life, one of my greatest interests has been to understand the nature of human evil, and deception is one of the primary characteristics of evil people.

Quotes from researchers:

"Imagine – if you can – NOT HAVING A CONSCIENCE, NONE AT ALL, no feelings of guilt or remorse no matter what you do, no limiting sense of concern for the well-being of strangers, friends, or even family members. Imagine no struggles with shame, not a single one in your whole life, no matter what kind of selfish, lazy, harmful, or immoral action you had taken.

Now add to this, the ability to conceal from other people that your psychological makeup is radically different from theirs. Since everyone simply assumes that conscience is universal among human beings, hiding the fact that you are conscience-free is nearly effortless.

For most people, evil is something you find in prisons or slums. They simply do not think of people who have money and dress nicely as being evil. But successful psychopaths do not end up in prisons or slums. They can be bankers, physicians, professionals of any stripe, politicians, even leaders of nations."

Here's a subject area that people in our movement need to be familiar with so we have a better understanding of the world we live in - and how the minds of the elite work. NO MOVEMENT WILL EVER SUCCEED THAT DOES NOT FACTOR PSYCHOPATHY AND PONEROLOGY INTO ITS CONSIDERATIONS!"

Universal belief systems

Fortune Favors the Bold

tie in somewhat with tribal mentality. They establish a common set of values for the group. However, they are also are used as a rationale against other tribal units (This other tribe/group doesn't even follow the basic universal moral law, therefore they don't deserve the same moral considerations that such law affords)

interesting

I haven't read it yet, but as far as your question, the best answer I've encountered is Dawkins' meme concept. That is, religions are memes - replicators that exist in the minds of humans and evolve for their own sake. He first develops the idea in the Selfish Gene and reflects on it in the God Delusion, but Susan Blackmore really expands on it in her book, The Meme Machine. Chapter 15 is "Religions as memeplexes" and is 17 pages essentially devoted to answering the questions you pose above.

As usual, Wikipedia has some decent basic information:

Much of the study of memes focuses on groups of memes called "memeplexes", "meme complexes" or "memecomplexes" — such as religious, biological organisms, cultural, or political doctrines and systems. Some selfish genes propagate more effectively together. Similarly some memes propagate more effectively together; they are called memeplexes. Examples are sets of beliefs like acupuncture and astrology, sets of traditions like Christmas celebrations, circumcision, languages, political ideologies, religions and scientific theories.

These conceptual Memeplexes can be true and useful or false and harmful to the mind carrying them, yet are able to self-propagate.

Religion

Memeplexes of religion provide a common example. In the case of Christianity, the theory suggests, the Christian memeplex evolved the Jewish religious teachings to form, among others, the Catholic church. Following the schism between the Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox churches, and later splits giving rise to various Protestant churches. Various people have added and deleted individual memes, resulting in the formation of completely different memeplexes (religions/sects) within the basic umbrella of Christianity, as well as within, for example, the Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant traditions.

Different memes in a memeplex can interact to reinforce each other. For example the Christian belief that non Christians go to Hell can make Christians reluctant to examine their doubts and see if their belief is rational or not. Hope of Salvation can encourage people to become Christians or remain Christians.

Yes Minarchist, I have read those books.

But I find the whole idea sort of lacking, not satisfying, not "beautiful". I don't think Dawkins is that crazy about it either, neither is Dennett.

The idea that the human genome produces with some regularity sociopaths, that is, those without empathy, would create pretitor vs prey relationship. I would be curious to read/learn if indeed sociopaths can be "true believers". I suspect not. They should be able to fake it though, rather well. But with MRI scans now, we just may be able to say --- someday, with some certainty, this person is feeling it, this person is modeling it.

Think we'd ever

get to use those?

So, are bad memes created on purpose

or by accident, by well intentioned people.

the webpage has a statement - "When you come to understand that the reins of political and economic power are in the hands of people who have no conscience, who have no capacity for empathy, it opens up a completely new way of looking at what we call "evil". Evil is no longer only a moral issue; it can now be analyzed and understood scientifically."

First I see no proof of the first part. I believe most people with power have a conscience, and empathy. why that makes the study of evil a science I don't know.

I would argue, that most evil occurs because of unintended consequences from good intentions. The memes that go along with these bad results are probably the easiest thing to study.

Do you think you can catch a bad meme before it does any damage though, because to grow, people must think it is good ?

why memes propagate

Memes propagate for the same reason that genes propagate - the effect they have on the environment causes them to be replicated more than other competing genes/memes.

How or why a given replicator (be it a gene, meme or anything else) originates is really beside the point. What matters is whether it happens to have the characteristics to be replicated with sufficient frequency to survive.

For religious memes to become less prevalent in the "meme pool" would require the environment to change so that it is less conducive to the replication of religious memes. For various reason we see this occurring in some cultures, particularly in northern Europe.

Minarchist, I am not

Minarchist,
I am not disagreeing with what you are posting but I will say what you've posted it's not as easy to understand as the article above. Ironman77 pulled out the meat of the article with his quote and it's just simpler to understand.

good post very interesting thanks
