Future of the DP - embrace CapitalismSubmitted by Colognepaulist on Sat, 06/28/2008 - 11:26
I started this thread as a comment to Michael Nystrom's "Moving Forward With the Daily Paul - Assistance & Input Requested" http://www.dailypaul.com/comment/reply/53519. I ask you to read this thread and add helpful comments, may be simply to honour what Michael has done by starting and maintaining this site! While writing my comment I realized it went somehow beyond the topic of Michael's thread, so I decided to make it a thread on its own.
First, thank you very much, Michael, for all the time, energy and money (uff!) you spend on this site. And I very much appreciate the kind and unobtrusive way you administer it, which I think is not only due to lack of time but to your personality. Guess, if everyone would behave like you and Dr. Paul do, mankind would make a great leap forward.
And I wish to say thank you to all the great people here who never showed any irritation to us foreigners posting on this site dedicated to restore the Constitution of the United States of America, but always showed their curiosity and lively interest in the way we see the rEVOLution and how the situation is in our countries. Not to forget all the sympathy and the suggestions we receive for our efforts to build a "ronpaulish" movement in our countries. Guess we already learned a lot from each other, and though we are all definetly not for world-governance, but in some way patriots, we start to realize: to win this struggle we cannot constrain our view to our own back-yard, even if it is a large one like yours.
So, I visit this site regularly and would be very sorry to see it go. I suppose the secret of its success (yes, I'am serious) lies in its accessibility and the clarity of its structure. Though the latter may be improved, I think it may come close to something I personally have dreamed of since years: a newspaper written by it's own readers. But not just as some hazy technical project but based on a commom spirit, the spirit of Liberty. So my vision of the Daily Paul after the election (whatever the outcome will be), when some necessities of the campaign will be gone, is that of a news-ressource provided by its readers for the cause of Liberty. It may be a good addition to the C4L. The Daily Paul may serve to inform and to discuss broader or "off-topic" issues, while the C4L will serve the purposes of campaigning.
So anyway, you are right, Michael, on the resources you mentioned here http://www.dailypaul.com/node/53519. Sorry I can offer no help regarding 1) and 2) and at least not for the long run regarding 3) though the DP needs some (unobtrusive, nystromlike) moderation, especially if it may go in the direction envisioned. But what I think is, to solve these problems on the long run without exploiting yourselve, you need the right mixture of dedication and commercialism. So why not go to a very straighforward capitalistic solution: form a company on shares who ownes the DP.
I guess, if there are twenty or thirty people on the DP who buy a share it shouldn't be that much money for everyone and if it is provided the DP works at least costcovering (should be doable) it may be a costcovering investment in the cause of Liberty. I personally would consider this. And I guess it' s an easier way for foreigners to support the DP than sending petty sums that are eaten up by transfer costs. Obviously the shareholders should have some reaI influence on the everyday running of the site, f.i. they should chose the moderators. Their risk should be limited to the money they have invested.
I don't know, what is the right "legal vehicle" to provide this under your law, but I guess this, like the IT problems, may be sorted out by some smart paulists.
