He was OBVIOUSLY referring to the belief that even if a child has an abusive parent, an illiterate parent, poor parents, unemployed parents, whatever....a good teacher can take that child and help them overcome this adversity and make something of themselves.
And all you that want to destroy public education, do you honestly think the majority of parents out there are smart enough to educate their kids? Really? You think George Bush is smart enough to educate his kids?

the issue is the unConstitutional use of tax-payer monies. Buisnesses and others can start their own schools and the people can choose to delegate that responsibility to whomever they think is qualified.

The more he talks, the more I think he is really a bad deal.
If this type of thing continues, I am convinced that at some point in the next 20 years you will start to see parent licences - that if you become pregnant you will have to register and go through some hoops. Maybe check in with social workers every now and then and get grades. I would place good money on that.

Actually, this has already started in
the UK. Parents now have to be "vetted" in order to hug or kiss their own children in public. A father cannot take his own daughter swimming in public without a license. Look to the UK and Germany and you will see more of what is in store for America!!

Why, it looks like Obama is championing HOMESCHOOLING! Look at his statements:

Now if only more parents got they message...keep your children OUT of the public school system. Teach them not only the science, reading and math skills they need but teach them morality, personal integrity and self-determination so sorely lacking throughout the public schools.

I read Obama's remarks; particularly those wherein he
set forth his general theory or mindset for the "objectives" that would constitute the "fixing" of public education. It sounded familar to me, as I'm sure others here would no doubt recognize as well, in that he was paying tribute to the education establishment itself. I happened to reread Dr. Thomas Sowell's book: "Inside American Education" not long ago and it struck me that Obama was simply repeating (aka: pandering to) the dogmas by which the educrats have operated the public education system (and even caused laws to be passed that have affected the private education system) as not so much a system of "education", but rather as a system of "indoctrination". The NEA is arguably the single most powerful union in the democratic tent and any democrat seeking high office is going to have to pay tribute to them or run the risk of feeling their wrath at the ballot box.

I agree, but I'd extend the same to parents who indoctrinate their children with the parents' religion. There is no such thing as a "Christian child." We wouldn't call a child of Republican parents a "Republican child," for example. Religion is a very important matter in a person's life, and should be made by well-informed, mature individuals, for the same reasons we don't recognize a child's ability to make decisions regarding sexual activity.
