Oregon is a state where primary results rule in the allocation of delegates to the Republican National Convention. You can't play fancy with the results and steal the outcome of an election from the voters, but you can steal delegate positions from people who actually support the candidate.

I believe Ron Paul won the votes of roughly 14 percent of Oregon republican voters this primary. We could have done better, if not for some silly mistakes. But, all in all, the results were worthy of our efforts. We can do better in the future if we continue to work SMARTER, not harder.

Ron Paul lost an Oregon delegate due to political trickery by McCain supporters. That is a cold hard fact. It is not hyperbole. It is not an exaggeration.

Oregon has 30 delegates, this year. Here's the math:

Three (3) Automatic -- Our party chairman, national committee man and national commitee woman.

ALL of these Automatic delegates are pledged to McCain by virtue of the Primary election result and the political nuance that it wouldn't look good if these leaders pledged Ron Paul. Besides, they don't support Ron Paul as individuals.

Twelve (12) At-Large -- Delegates elected from a statewide pool of applicants during five, simultaneous congressional district conventions on July 12.

Eight of these "At-Large" Delegates go to John McCain, by virtue of the Oregon primary election results.
Four of these "At-Large" Delegates go to Ron Paul, by virtue of the Oregon primary election results.

Fifteen (15) Congressional District -- Delegates elected from each congressional district, based on residence.

ALL of these Congressional District delegates had to be pledged to McCain because of the primary election results. Do the math. McCain gets 26.8 delegates and Ron Paul gets 4.2 delegates. Round the result (based on a 14 percent primary result for Paul).

Thirty (30) ALTERNATES -- Every delegate has a backup alternate with the same qualifications as the delegate -- in theory. Some exceptions apply.

O.K.! Now that you know how it is supposed to work, what actually happened in Oregon.

The McCain politicos in Oregon drafted a "Unity Slate" and tried to "trick" or convince convention voters into voting for McCain supporters to fill Ron Paul slots. This was true with the exception of one Ron Paul delegate on their "Unity Slate."

The McCain faction overpowered the Ron Paul base in one instance only. So, we now have a determined McCain supporter representing us as a Ron Paul delegate to the Republican National Convention. We succeeded in beating back a similar effort among our alternates.

IN REALITY, THERE ARE ONLY THREE OFFICIAL RON PAUL DELEGATES and FOUR RON PAUL ALTERNATES. THE OREGON 4 RON PAUL grassroots leadership chose to run no undercover McCain delegates.

The successful McCain supporter who agreed to pose as a Ron Paul supporter is Marc Lucca, a reserve police officer. Those who would like to encourage Mr. Lucca to understand how important it is for him to support Ron Paul should simply comment on this post and we'll try to find ways to communicate with him.
