Should we have a nationwide 55 mph speed limit?

Liberals say Iraq is another Vietnam; conservatives say Barack Obama is Jimmy Carter redux. ABBA's a mega-hit and Elton John's going to be performing at Madison Square Garden. Had enough of these '70s flashbacks? Brace yourself for another: the return of the national speed limit, courtesy of one of the country's most venerable politicians.

Senator John Warner (R-VA) - elected in 1978 - recently expressed interest in the idea of a national speed limit to conserve gasoline. Warner, who is not running for re-election this year, wrote to U.S. Secretary of Energy Sam Bodman, asking "at what speed is the typical vehicle traveling on America's highways today most fuel efficient?"

Warner told TIME his concern is for "the many millions and millions [of Americans] of limited means, sitting around their kitchen table trying to figure out how to make ends meet." Unlike long-term alternative energy sources, Warner says, a speed limit would work to bring down gas prices immediately. "Maybe some guy's got a better idea," he says. "But I haven't seen it."

What about more homeschooling and internet-based education as described at http://www.dailypaul.com/node/55447 ? That would reduce the amount of time and energy spent transporting our kids to and from school.

no!

Whatever small gain you get from fuel conservation you lose in time. My time is valuable and I don't want trips to take 30 minutes longer to save 2 dollars or whatever. Actually they should raise the speed limits.

Junk

They already pulled that junk.

And, the "convertibles" are dangerous stuff, and banned 'em for a while.

At that time it was "all about the insurance companies" losin' money when folks were injured and, or, died!

Update, sort of:

When the motorbike folks wear a seat belt, I'll put mine on. How do ya think that'll hold up in court?

Seat belts are another insurance scam and a "freedom violation"!

ive got a great alternative for ya.....

how about the worthless political class leeches get out of the way and let the market deal with this problem.

they, after all, are the source of the problem, what with their needless wars, threats against Iran, central economic planning, and inflation of the money supply. are we really going to look to them for a solution? national speed limit?? what a joke.

why not take this idiotic idea to its logical conclusion and just make the speed limit 0 mph thereby effectively ending driving??

i am so tired of these pricks trying to regulate our behavior and action as if they have the wisdom to do anything but suck up resources from the market like a disease...

Absolutely Not!

We all know that ANYTHING that our sorry government comes up with is due to not only fail but ruin everything around it!

They are destroyers! Got it? They have NO GOOD IDEAS LEFT!

NONE!

The only thing that should be lowered nationwide is the paychecks of these SOBs in Washington DC.

How's about lowering their pay to $55,000 per year?

Still about $40,000 too much but that's OK.

Yes, but.......

I don't drive over 65 most of the time (I'm mostly 70-75mph zones). Back when it was passed 3 decades ago that was the "efficient zone" for cars then. Today's cars need to be tested. I'm pretty sure it'll be 55 b/c above that is when air resistance takes in effect. And air resistance goes up exponetially. It only takes around 30hp to move a car at 60mph, but to break 200 it takes around 800hp even in the slickest of designs. I'm doing it by choice and kind of necessity. Will they.. Nope, not unless it gets really bad. These people want to get elected again.. It's political suicide these days. So yes for me, but they won't do it anytime soon.

Yes

Excellent plan! Save resources until we can drill more oil. Excellent campaign issue to draw a distinction between GOP and those socialists in the Democratic party.

NO.

Fanciful likes or dislikes... That has nothing remotely to do with the issue at hand. This isn't for any kind of benefit whatsoever--that's not just a guess. Too many people approach life like it's an ongoing experiment.

It would serve absolutely no purpose. It would cause damage.

The educated idiots on the Hill know that. They just love playing boss; that's all. This isn't some halfed-baked, off-the-cuff assumption; this is a knowledge, based on both memory and mechanical background.

Our elected morons know that the public usually uses kneejerk reaction to decide, espeacially when a self-imosed expert "confirms" something that sounds logical.

What speed limit?

I have yet to see a 'speed limit' sign designated as 'm.p.h.". The signs simply state-Speed Limit 55. 55 what is my question; degrees, inches or maybe it's kilometers per hour. When you are pulled over for speeding the officer generally asks, "do you know how fast you were going?" and or, "do you know what the speed limit is here?" When you reply that you were going x miles per hour you have made a legal determination that the speed limit is designated in miles per hour. What you should instead do is invoke your 5th amendment right to not incriminate yourself. And here's a few bigger questions: Since when did a free American need a drivers license to travel on the roads that they own? What authority do traffic code enforcement officers have over a free and sovereign American (and if they do have authority where does it come from)?

We must hang together, or surely we will hang separately

We must hang together, or surely we will hang separately

It wouldn't matter.

People would still barrel down the highways at 85mph in their gas-guzzling V8 anyway.

It never ceases to amaze me that in these times of high gas prices, I see people tromping on the accelerator, flying up to stoplights and jamming on the brakes at the last second, speeding like mad, doing burn-outs, and seemingly not caring or knowing what it's doing to their gas mileage.

I've come to the conclusion that many Americans are simply mega-consumers and will do anything possible to completely use up whatever resources they have at the earliest possible time.

A 55mph limit would just make more speeding tickets happen, and not do a thing for fuel savings, because people wouldn't observe the lower limit

yeah

Fortune Favors the Bold

it amezes me. When I a green light turns red, I take my foot off the accelarator, and cruise up. People actually get mad at you for doing this! It's like you're suppossed to get up to the red light as fast as possible so you can wait for it to turn green. Never mind how much gas you're wasting.

The other thing that drives me crazy is when you are in stop and go graffic, and people accelerate up five feet and then stop. What's up with that? If you just stop accelerating, the traffic jam actually clears up. But people honk, nonetheless.

Hypermilers unite!

Hypermilers unite!
I got 33mpg/city in my Acura 2000 Integra (5spd) last week - by doing those same types of things - coasting, slower stops/starts, even speeds, going 40 in a 45 zone...
You have to be vigilant of idiots who nearly side swipe you though - how to protect yourself from ignoramuses. That is the zillion dollar question, no?

Vehicles should be more efficient!

It wouldn't surprise me to find that oil interests keep car fuel economy poor deliberately

55 miles mit hauer

Oh no. It should be raised to at least 80 mph to accommodate euro travellers and raising it higher still may take less stress on the road and bridge surfaces if down draft spoilers are forbidden? But I do think Harley's should be limited to 35mph. LOL.

No, high prices slow people down anyway.

Let the market decide...
I used to be a "speed demon", but lately (last few years) I drive like an "old grandma" (no offense to "The Grannys"). I even started doing some "Hyper-Mileing", coasting when possible and turning off the engine sometimes, etc.
Different vehicles have their own "optimum" speed. My motorcycle gets 30mpg no matter what speed I drive? My Cadillac has a mileage computer readout, it gets 25mpg at 70mph in overdrive, less at 55, it's not up to optimum speed. My truck, well 10-15 no matter what.

Of course it would save gas.

But so what? The government shouldn't be forcing us to save gas. Let the market decide how much gas it wants to use.
