Arrogant Veterans

I live in Ohio, the state that 'won' it for Bush in 04. So, needless to say, everyone is uber-republican, uber-conservative, and uber-close-minded.

Everytime I try and debate someone about Iraq, the war on terror, civil liberties, 9/11 (I believe in blowback, not 9/11 'truth'), etc....the only argument most people throw back is "You dont understand because you didnt serve in the military." I was debating someone who was only 20/21 (I am 18) and I was telling him about how the government lied about Iraq and how blowback and past military actions caused 9/11, and he called me a coward for not serving in the military.

I have friends who staged a 9/11 truth signwave not too far from my hometown, and they posted video, and in the video a man on a motorcycle pulls up, says "have you ever served in the US armed forces?" My friend said "No, but what does that have to do with....:" and then the man pulled away.

On Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, me and my friends went out in front of Walmart, at 6 in the morning, in the blistering cold (with flurries), and held signs for Ron Paul. 5 hour later, the manager came out, ripped up our signs, and said he was pissed off and offended because his son was serving in Iraq!!! As if my wanting his son to come home was somehow a slap in the face!!

And a few weeks ago, I went to Buckeye Boys State, which is a week long camp at Bowling Green State University, in which you run for offices and run your own 51st state. Everything from bailiff to governor to county clerk to newspaper staff (which is what I did). It was run by the American Legion, and everything those old men said was (basically) about how unless you have the honor of serving in the US military, you don't really deserve to have an opinion on politics or war.

How do you combat such ignorance and arrogance?? I know that I will never serve in the military. I do not trust the government, and no nation is dumb-enough to invade the mainland. If a draft came, I would either run to Canada, and then fly to Scandinavia, or apply for CO status, or burn my card and go to jail as a martyr.

In the military, these men are trained to be desensitized to humanity. The man that ordered his soldiers to commit the My Lai massacre said in court of the Vietnamese "they never told us they were humans." HOW DO I EXPRESS MY OPINIONS AGAINST THE WAR AND THIS ADMINISTRATION AND THIS NATION'S DARK HISTORY WHEN EVERYONE IS SO CAUGHT UP IN THEIR OWN ARROGANCY??!

This is a great read

and lots of great advice here.

It's really no task at all, to educate most people.

What is nearly impossible is convincing them to unlearn the lifetime's worth of sophistry, propaganda and lies; all of which precludes them from realizing that we may have something valuable to teach them in the first place. I also call these people the “collective ignorant”.

But the thing is "the people" are vast and diverse. Many are working actively, diligently, to bring an end to the crimes we outline. Probably most are too busy trying to deal with unnecessarily overcomplicated lives (to some extent due to the perpetration of these crimes by their "representatives") to even notice much beyond their immediate crisis.

Another thing is to separate

Another thing is to separate the soldiers from the mission. Mostly our soldiers are good people, patriotic people who are doing their duty for their country. They have risked their lives, their health and their futures for their nation and do deserve our gratitude, respect and support. The problem with the Iraq occupation is not our soldiers but the rich and corrupt military-industrial complex that is manufacturing bogus but very profitable wars. They are the worst enemy of our nation, our freedom AND our soldiers. Our military personnel are largely good. They should remain well trained, well armed, provided with the best of the best in armament and kept here at home to defend our nation if called upon to do so. Their lives should not be spent enriching the likes of Haliburton.

BOHICA!!

Many veterans think because

Many veterans think because they served they have a monopoly on patriotism. You have to understand that it’s an emotional thing. It’s very hard for someone to admit to themselves after what they may have sacrificed in war that it might have been an unjust war. So they don’t want to listen especially to anyone who has not been through what they have.

The best way to deal with this is to get some veterans who are Ron Paul supporters and against the war to stand with you, they are out there. Ask your meetup. Also ask them why Ron Paul receives more donations from active duty military then all other candidates combined? Also when showing videos get some of the videos of Iraq veterans who are against the war.

Also make sure your not coming off disrespectful to veterans or there service. I usually start out thanking them for their service and letting them know I am not questioning their service or looking down on them for their service as they believed they were doing the right thing. People don’t want to believe they participated in an unjust war, but many veterans are realizing and waking up. Still some of them may be willing to listen to another veteran when they would not listen to someone else.

Um...you think "everyone" is uber-Republican and conservative in Ohio? I beg to differ. Look at voter registration numbers, Ohio's (Democratic) governor, congressional delegation, etc., before making such a statement.

Okay....the area I live is

Okay....the area I live is uber-conservative. Bush came to speak in my town square for godsake. Don't question my intelligence. I know very well that we elected a democratic governor and congress. The large areas such as Cincy, Dayton, Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo...those areas are Democratic. But the areas in between, farmlands, where I live, are Republican..overwhelmingly so.

See my recent post

As for the war, now I realize we shouldn't have been there to begin with, it was justified based upon lies, the head of the CIA was disgracefully forced to resign because of it. With my newfound realization that we went to war based upon lies, it's apparent that leaving is not giving up everything already sacrificed, leaving is cutting our losses short and preventing further unnecessary sacrifice - the longer we stay, the more we lose.

You have to understand that these veterans have their whole.....

......belief system tied up in what the government has told them. Almost all vets are good people who did sacrifice much, and it would be a natural reaction to view a questioning attitude towards our government as a negative response towards themselves. In many cases, these people have personal doubts about our government and the course it has taken, but are unwilling to admit it to themselves, because they think it calls into question their own sacrifice. Many veterans don't see that it is two separate things, they are true patriots, but so are the protesters. To serve one's country is honorable, the veterans are honorable, but the people running our government at this time are anything but honorable. Keep up the good fight. Continue your education. You are on the right path.

I completely sympathize.

I completely sympathize. Those guys think that being a veteran is an end all for debates and arguments. I'm so sick of war-hawks whether they have served in the military or not.

OUR TROOPS DON'T DEFEND FREEDOM!! is what I want to shout at them. They take an oath to protect the constitution and yet they blindly follow a president who shts on it. If they were asked to use force against US citizens because of the president's command they would do it. The founding fathers never wanted standing armies but you can't get through to those ass holes.

Better start planning...

If a draft comes, Canada probably won't allow you into the country (as a draft-age male). Secondly, to be a successful CO, you must have a "track record" of being a pacifist. Many people in the peace movement begin portfolios for their children as soon as they are born that show them being involved in activities that would bolster there claim to be CO's -- peace marches, religious movements, letters/stories written as children, etc.

If you're thinking about leaving, you might want to do it sooner rather than later.

i'm a veteran of OIF

and i can tell you first hand it's all a lie. and looking back on it i'm not even sure who was attacking us. most of the time it was obvious it was other American forces shooting at us. i'd say 90% of the direct fire i received was from passing US convoys. what i'm not sure about is who was planting and detonating those bombs. of course i'm supposed to believe it was some dirt poor Iraqi. of course while i was there we were told it was them damn foreign fighters. now that i've had two years to look back on it i wouldn't doubt one bit if it was the CIA. i still want to know how some of these massive bombs were planted right under our noses. i was on a tank. we have thermal and night vision capabilities. we maintained a 24 hour presence on that damn highway. and yet somehow people would be able to plant massive bombs. ones that would only be triggered if a track vehicle drove over them. i have no proof it was anybody other than locals. but even guys i served with are questioning who it was. i know whenever we deployed sniper teams in the middle of the night and they would stay out until dark the next day nothing would happen. like they always knew when we had them out. yet the day they were gone BOOM!

and i know for a fact Special Forces gave locals radios and other equipment because they were supposedly informants for them. maybe SF was informing them of our positions. i hate to accuse those guys of anything like that because i worked directly with them. and i saw the results they got, but shit doesn't add up to me.

i know if an Iraqi police officer is alive 3 months after starting the job he's dirty. and i don't blame him one bit. those guy are sitting ducks. it's one gigantic goat f#*k over there

No matter who you vote for, the government always gets in - Bill Hicks

I'm a Veteran

and the only thing I need to understand from my representatives is that they took an oath to defend and uphold the U.S. Constitution just like I did when I joined. I did not take an oath to support a candidate or even a party.

As an ex-military member...

I am totally disgusted with what this President, and our Congress has done. Our government as a whole no longer respects the Oaths they have taken for their office, and must be removed, it is our jobs as American Patriots, and citizens to see that they are removed. Stop being afraid, speak up, and made your voices be heard, and if that does not do the trick, do what Glenn Beck wants to do, raise up your pitch forks and do battle.

Cameron ...

You are living the life of Ron Paul. He gets the same thing in Congress. Laughed at, put down, ignored.

Here, read this post:

Try to realize who you are and how people percieve you. Set some realistic goals based on your self evaluation. Then go out and achieve them.

That is what life is all about.

I wish you well and God speed.

WAHOR!!

thanks for replying, everyone

And one of the things I hear is: "you dont agree with the war? well f**k you! I was in Iraq for 15 months fighting for your freedom!"

That pisses me off: 1) because Iraq has nothing to do with freedom and 2) because it seems the fact that they fought for freedom, nullifies my freedoms.

The American Legion was hellbent on that. They glorified themselves to no end, saying how awesome they were. And some of them who fought in World War II, yes, they can say that. I mean, they defended the GODDAMN NAZIS!!! That is something to brag about. But Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Lebanon, Iraq, etc...those are cases in which men were used as pawns in chess. And the veterans went on and on about how "they fought for freedom and liberty and security" but if you didnt salute the flag, you were anti-american, even though you were expressing the most extreme freedom awarded to you.

The whole 9-day camp was sponsored by the local chapter, and if you did anything to get sent home you had to repay all fees (somewhere around 500-1000 dollars) I had originally brought my Gadsden flag and an American flag to hang upside down in my room (as a protesting signal of distress) but decided not to because that would get me kicked out.

Like my counsellor said (he is a mild libertarian, likes Ron Paul), 'if we outlaw flag burning, then we can join our brothers in Iran and North Korea!'

Just a note

World War II and I and previous wars are also just chess games like the ones you listed. Those wars were also based on lies. Unfortunately for those in involved in those and some later ones, are caught up in the myth of glory. I don't blame them, nor think pooorly of them, I'm just sad that it has to be this way. Keep up the good work on getting the message out. Thank you for being a part of this :) Try not to get too pissed off at those that don't understand. Just remember the elitist financiers have been working on the propoganda for a long time, over generations to try to acheive their goals because they think they know all the answers and what is best for the future. Of course, we know they are wrong. We have a hard sruggle to undo all the lies that have been told for so long, but if we hold fast to the truth, demand the truth, and pursue it where it hides, we will prevail. Something that might help to combat them is too drop questions for them that they have to research, or facts that make them think about what they believe. Good luck! :)

youre only 18?

This is what fascism is. You

This is what fascism is. You see, in order for fascism to work, you have to get normal citizens to participate. This is why Hitler was able to do what he did. Most people are sheep, easily led a stray. Moreover, most people don't analyze things. Find me a person who recently had their house foreclosed or someone who is really being hurt by the current economic crisis and I'll show you a sheep--someone easily manipulated and who would be a candidate for fascism.

I'm not saying all military folks are stupid but most are sheep--that's why they join--and most are fascist by nature.

The kids in the military now are fascists. They weren't forced by the government to join, they felt compelled to. They felt the need to force their "freedom" and beliefs down the throats of other people.

This is fascism folks....

My grandfather served in

My grandfather served in Vietnam, but after he was discharged he admitted that the war was pointless. He doesnt like the Iraq War, and is actually a pretty solid Ron Paul supporter. He just told me that the military was right for him because it gave him direction in life. But he also criticized people who make a career out of it, because he didn't want to live his whole life listening to orders. He makes fun of the American legion because they get together, and wear their little hats, because those 4+ years that they served were the best thing they ever did, and 60 years later, they havent made anything of themselves.

Don't sweat it...

I served in the first Gulf War, and I'm behind you all the way. It's the neo-cons and their propaganda machine that's creating this attitude. Don't worry about it... freedom never comes easy... always with a price. Most of those people are just like I was just a few years ago. Apathetic and brainwashed. Ignore them, because you know you're on the right side of the argument.

Just my opinion...

Most veterans believe they are defending your freedom. They think that you should be greatful to them and the only reason you are free, is because of them.

So to them, they see you as a whiney civilian who is anti-govt and a sympathizer to the enemy..

Nobody defends freedom but them. You piss ant civilians don't defend freedom. Questioning your govt and holding them accountable is not defending your freedom... because to most military and govt officials, govt is never an enemy of your freedom. I think most military have the Nixon mentality... if the govt does it.. it's not illegal. so basically you need to quit your whining, and worship govt because they are protecting your freedom.

That is what I have come to the conclusion of.. from talking with many veterans and current military members. I get the sense that a lot of them no longer have the ability to use their own brains.. they just say what's been programmed into them. I say this, having a life long friend in the marines, who has that mentality. He never use to be that way.

That would drive me crazy too

My tricks for when I debate someone is to debate them as if I am on their side and I always agree with what they are saying whether I believe it or not. That way, they will be more likely to come to your side because they think that they'd already come to that conclusion on their own. Also, that way they won't feel that they need to be defensive. Start by saying you respect their patriotism and the fact that they are willing to put their lives on the line. After all, you certainly wouldn't have the courage. (build them up so they have no reason to feel defensive) Then explain that that is why you are so outraged that the Bush administration has taken advantage of them for that in order to further their own agenda.

I am a Veteran and

I think you have plenty of courage!

You have to understand: Vets are people, too. We can be confused and mislead and lied and motivated for the wrong reasons, JUST LIKE everyone else.

A lot of ex-military, in my opinion, don't WANT to believe that the gov has just used them. They reject any whiff of that notion. Because if they believe that then they will understand that their sacrifice for their country was in vain and their country is actually spiraling towards globalism.

They don't want to believe this is the reality that they have helped to manifest. They want their service to mean something. And they themselves define what it means. Some define it as ignorant pride, which has been demonstrated to you by the people you mentino in your post.

My service to me represented me becoming who I am now: a peacemaker and a problem solver. Not an ignorant and stupid tool to be weilded by others. I became my own man. Some never do.

Bless you. Keep fighting for the things you know are right. NEVER give up that last inch of dignity.

Perfectly said

Waldon, and thank you for your service. I am a veteran, and I share your view. These military men and women can't really just say you are wrong Mr. President, I quit. There is a lot of pride built up in these men and women but it is built on falsehood. The problem is that they truly refuse to believe that they are working for a dictator. It would be really hard to serve your country if you thought everything you were doing was actually for the wrong agenda. These men and women have a pride built in them that would be hard to break coming from a civilian. My best friend and I joined back in 94, and he is still in, he made a career of it. I tried to tell him what was going on, and did I get the cold shoulder. Sometimes it is better for the soldiers not to know, because how well they perform in battle has a lot to do with how they feel about what they are doing. For them to know the truth could mean the difference between life or death for them, literally.

Hang in there young man...

...and remember that these "old" veterans come from a different generation, a generation that could NEVER question their government or discuss their concerns in a public forum, they simply believed what they were told. You come from a time of instant information and the luxury of having access to volumes of information and historical fact and so you are enlightened to the truth and cannot understand how they cannot be enlightened as well. I'm just pleased that you are willing to engage in conversations about important issues... you never know who may be listening. Good Job!

This country

is filled with a bunch of dumb asses and I seriously doubt they will EVER wake up. They will have another false flag and all these gung ho kuckle heads will jump to go shoot somebody for revenge. The elite will point fingers and the nimrods will charge. I'm with you FED UP. Don't know how Dr. Paul did this for 30 years. I feel like beating the hell out of my tv set because it is a useless piece of propaganda tool. Maybe, we should have a national destroy your useless propaganda tool television day. LOL, ahh, hell thanks, this is a great thread to vent. Thanks, I needed that Peace
