I have not seen examples of what you are talking about here on DP, so it might be just your own opinion and not necessarily correct, unless you show examples to people, who can look at the posts for themselves and agree with your position or not.

Minneapolis has a large and fast growing Somali population. I sometimes walk past a large high rise low income housing project full of Somalis. I do not worry about crime in their neighborhood. Not from them anyway. My son, a liberal who voted with the Somali's for Kieth Ellison, our nation's only Muslim congressman, made the offhand comment that Somalis mix with the rest of the population like oil mixes with water.

And I admit, much of my new found faith turned into islam bashing. And even though I knew 9-11 was an inside job, I joined the navy and I kinda convinced myself that GWB must have knew something that the rest of us didnt... and that is why he waged war against the muslems. Now I understand that given all the historical facts of US involvement in that region (base in saudi, overthrow of the shah, supporting saddam before going against him, creating al queda to fight the russians ect ect) I began to realize that radical islam only a symptom... not the disease. The disease is the NWO.

Now im to the point where i dont want an empire... i just want my country. I mean 1 million dead iraqis over demonstratably false information... my God in Heaven... leave these people be.

I have never been afraid of Muslims. Personally, it is not in my nature to judge a whole, by its parts. I have a nice family who moved across the street from me and most of neighborhood freaked. They would talk about them or they had their house paintballed. It was a shame the first few years, but people have thankfully come to accept them. They stay to themselves. They wave hi and bye. I would not be outwardly thrilled with my neighbors after what they encountered. Their oldest daughter graduated from my school and she was always very pleasant to me and my family. I see how they stick together as a family and I admire that a lot.
We have a ton of Albanian students in my school who are all Muslim. It was just a matter of getting used to a new culture or ideals. They are still into arranged marriages, as well as the daughter being prepared as a wife and the son is very important to the family. As a woman I I find it challenging to work with them based onn my experiences and values. Most of them look European, so without asking you would not know their religion, yet they believe the same as others from the Middle East.

Life is about find ways to work together and to see the person/spirit of each individual. We are all doing the best we can with what we know how. Individual I mean not as a collective- just because I think or know something and hold it to be my truth- it may not be anothers.

I like questions like this that hold ourselves accountable and make us reach insideto see what our true value individually are.

I was never wary of muslims so how could I "still" be wary of them.

I really do not know any Muslims here in the US but I have traveled to Jordan, Morocco, Zanzibar, and Israel. There were both things I appreciated and disliked about these communities as with all others.

The best thngs I encountered were the incredible hospitality and friendliness. I can not think of a more helpful, happy, genuine, live-in-the moment group of people that I have met.

There is a constant gratefullness of Allah type of feeling everywhere. Not in a sense of "my God is better than your God" type of way, but in a "We are all the same" type of way. I guess when you are reminded at least 5 times a day of the Creator it is easy to stay focused.

The dislikeness of being unique was facsinating. In Morocco everyone wears a jelaba, men and women alike, which seems to cover up superficial disturbances and makes you focus more on who people are instead of what they look like, kinda like the Internet.

I loved the ever presence of the elderly. Something that the American culture has gotten rid of. Everyone takes care of their family as in most parts of the World besides here. It is nice to see all of the old and wise hanging around.

And the exceptance of outsiders was quite amazing, especially in Zanzibar. I was there during Ramadan, hanging with people fasting who never drank but was is no way ridiculed about having a drink. I can not say that I felt as comfortable, from nondrinking folks, as I did there.

The one big and bad thing is the nonexistence of women on the streets or even that I even met there. Especially in the non-westernized places. It is eery. In some small towns you may see hundreds of men on the streets and not a single women. Ouch.

Israel is a different story. I have to say that I never traveled to a place with such uptight and sad people. There were only 1 and 10 drivers that were women. They may tout there liberal western ways but have a long way to go. And the poor, poor, Arabs. I was completely appalled at the treatment of the Arabs there. After visiting Israel I have always said "If I was a Palestinian I would be a terrorist too." What a sad situation.

Although I have read a little of the Koran and was not too keen on the fact that Mohamad used force to establish his views, I still have a great deal of respect and admiration for the Islamic people I have met. In my travels I came to appreciate the Muslims and there religion.

Here are the 5 pillars of Islam which I noticed are widely practiced.

Five Pillars of Islam:

1. The Shahadah - "I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is a messenger of Allah"

2. Salat - The second pillar of Islam is Salat, the requirement to pray five times a day at fixed times.

3. Zakat - The third pillar is the practice of charitable giving by Muslims based on accumulated wealth, and is obligatory for all who are able to do so. It is considered to be a personal responsibility for Muslims to ease economic hardship for others and eliminate inequality.

4. Sawm - Is fasting. Three types of fasting (Sawm) are recognized by the Qur'an: Ritual fasting, fasting as compensation or repentance, and ascetic fasting.

5. The Hajj is a pilgrimage that occurs during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah to the holy city of Mecca, and derives from an ancient Arab practice. Every able-bodied Muslim is obliged to make the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their lifetime if they can afford it.

Im no more wary of muslims than anyone else. I dont buy into the idea that somehow they ALL want to blow us up. Its a smaller segment of them who are embittered by the results of this awful us/israeli policy in the middle east.
If we offered them peace and justice we'd get the same in return.

My personal experiences with Muslims have been negative. I strive to evaluate them on an individual basis, but it's sometimes difficult for me to set aside what I observed while I was involved with the local Muslim community. They're raised in cultures that don't value honesty.

Ive had the fortune of knowing more than a few Muslims on a casual aquaintence basis. My experiences were just as positive/negative as anyone else depending on the individual. Im ashamed to admit that in the weeks following 9/11- when it seemed that as a community they were doing little to decry the attacks - i became a little leery and paranoid. (sadly much like the German citizens probably felt about the Jews after their govt's propaganda campaign). I wondered if deep inside these people was kept a hidden, secret joy over the sucker-punch the Islamo-facists had apparently landed on us that they not dare share in mixed company. Within a month of seeing scattered reports of racial profiling and hate attacks on these regular people I began to equate the Islamo facists as the Muslim version of mainstream Christian's perversion in the "God Hates F*gs" church. By 10/11 I was back to where I was on 9/10. Today I see that we were mostly lied to and manipulated about Muslims. There's just plenty of reasons to hate people on an individual basis- the guy up the road from me that buys butter at Safeway and sells it at 3 am for a 400% mark-up is an a-hole...but not because he's a Muslim.
