The Next Money Bomb - 11/ 23 - Buy Nothing Day?
Submitted by Michael Nystrom on Mon, 11/05/2007 - 11:40Wow!!!! Today, November 5th is a wild, great, beautiful success thanks to all of us!! It is so amazing to see our power, when we focus and work together! Without a focus, we all saw how the fundraising efforts languished. So it seems clear that we need something like this that we can all get excited about, and feel a part of. Every one of us who donates feels like we are a part of something much bigger - and that is a great feeling.
I've been thinking about the next money bomb day and want to throw this out - November 23 - Buy Nothing Day.
From Wikipedia:
Buy Nothing Day is an informal day of protest against consumerism observed by social activists.
It takes place on the day after Thanksgiving - traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year as people start their Christmas buying. Participants in buy nothing day are encouraged not to spend a cent that day.
Here is their official website for Buy Nothing Day, at Adbusters magazine. I started reading Adbusters about 11 years ago, and it is what really helped me open my eyes to the differences between how the world appears, and how the world really is.
How about encouraging people to donate the money that they would have otherwise spent on Christmas shopping? This would be a very easy sell to people:
- Would you rather buy a disposable gift at Crate & Barrel that the recipient may never use, or instead invest that money in the cause for liberty and freedom?
- Buy nothing for Ron Paul!
Etc.
Comments and suggestions welcome - let's talk it out.

Thanksgiving for the Constitution! Great idea!!
Much prefer Thanksgiving Day exactly as the next best day..."Buy Nothing" day sounds a bit too odd, off-beat, left-field. It is not, of course, but why unnecessarily assume that baggage?
Buy Nothing Day may be a great idea in itself but given the original intent of Thanksgiving Day, why not choose that...it would be very, very difficult to spin Thanksgiving Day negatively.
Great idea! Thanks for sharing!
Loveolution!
Original Thxgvng Day was to "give thanks" for Constitution!
I would like to suggest that we make 11/26 the next moneybomb day for this reason; according to the Constitution Center web site, "Established on November 26, 1789, the first national "Thanksgiving Day" was originally created by George Washington as a way of "giving thanks" for the Constitution!!". What better day to choose! Let the media try to spin that!!!! Besides most every employer gives a bonus albeit small to their employees on that day. Suppose everyone donates their company's gift back to RP! Just a thought.
MAKE IT OFFICIAL
DECEMBER 16. A lot of people get paid on the 15th. By then, everyone will be paying attention to the election. Since it comes on a Sunday, and in the same month as Christmas, we should have the bomb start at $25 or $50 and UP. Of course, if people can give more they will, but we don't want to compete too much with Christmas or Tithes. December is a stressful month. Although picking our next President is extremely important, I don't want to try to dictate what people should do with their money. Starting at a smaller amount, we will be able to bring in more donors who may hold on to their money by seeing $100 on the computer screen. Some are cheap, some are actually broke, but we want them all to pitch in. If we can get another 30,000 to give $100 plus an extra 30,000 giving $25 and $50, the amount of money on that day should be his best day ever. Once this happens, the media will be force to shift in Ron's favor because they will want his money when it's time to pay for commercial ads.
What about this idea..
1. Coordinate meetup efforts for a sign blitz Thanksgiving week.
2. Ask supporters to wear RP gear while they shop on Black Friday.
Its a pretty simple, yet very effective plan. And its the last time we have before primaries start to reach strangers at that level.

What I'm Doing
I definitely will be contributing again on the eve of the Boston Tea Party/commemoration of the Bill of Rights.
Also, I'll probably be donating on Veterans Day. Didn't a group of veterans choose the 11th as a Ron Paul donation day? If so, we shouldn't have to worry so much about the media painting us as anti-veteran.
Regardless, I will not make any financial contributions on the week of Christmas. I'm going to be spending those days travelling, with family, and at church.
I'll still be talking about Ron Paul though!
Three cheers for freedom and the Ron Paul Revolution!
P.S. The browser ad idea sounds awesome! Ron Paul fans spend so much time online, it'd be nothing for us to look at some more advertisements and earn some money for our candidate!
We'll be taking free enterprise where its never gone before!
Count me in
this sounds like a perfect Christmas shopping spree and that is getting the best present of all for everybody Ron Paul for President !!!!
HO! HO! HO!
"Freedom is a right that can never be won in war, only by each individual "
December 7 or December 3 seems the best so far
The problem with December 16 is that it's too late. The primaries start two weeks later. Dr. Paul needs that money to do what he can in December to get votes in January.
Early in December is the best.
The Ron Paul Broswer (fundraising idea)
With all of the time each of us spends on the internet, we should be earning money for the campaign. Is there a programmer on here that can create a webpage that displays ads while we broswe the internet. The proceeds of this could be donated to the campaign.
If there are 30,000 using the ads who spend 30 minutes on the web every day, then that would be a few $1,000 per day that could be donated. By the end of the quarter, this would amount to somewhere between $30-$50k.
We could set up an ownership structure that includes 1k-2k supporters. After the money accrues, we can distribute the proceeds for everyone to donate to the campaign in an "on your honor" system.
So many to choose from...
And all for good reasons.
But pocket books are thin this time of year and we need time to save and recover to gie our best again.
I humbly uggest we stay witht he Revolution theme, and choose Dec 15/16th. The Boston Tea party is an icon of revolution, and the 2nd amendment is our last security against Tyranny.
Its also!!!
1. Not a Rent week for many
2. not the same week as a major holiday. Which can be mentally, emotionally and fiscally draining.
When planning a big event like this, go for the best effect! We are not only infusing the campaign, we are re-energizing the people and the press.
And like those big dinners that are coming, we all need time to digest and relax, so we can do it again :)

I agree!
The Boston Tea Party is an excellent!
I work for the government...
so I get paid once a month. A money bomb should be a once a month thing in my opinion.
And yes, I know a vote for Ron Paul will be bad for my current occupation...but I'd rather shovel cow dung than vote for Hillary or Rudy. Freedom is priceless after all.

Boston Tea Party
It's perfect: They rallied against unjust tariffs--we rally against unjust tariffs. Plus it just has a ring to it that will get people's attention.
My vote: Boston Tea Party
I would vote for the Boston Tea Party. There is already a website created for this date (teaparty07.com), and it would give plenty of time to organize and save up for.
Why not keep Nov. 11 as the
Why not keep Nov. 11 as the date for the next money bomb? Those who can afford to give will and those who cannot will have future money bomb dates. It need not be strictly one date or another.
Poll?
Michael-
Would it be possible to maybe put a poll on the front page regarding the next "Money Bomb" date?
So far, the ideas I've seen are:
11/11 -- Veteran's Day
11/23 -- Buy Nothing Day
12/07 -- Pearl Harbor Day
12/15-16 Boston Tea Party Day / Bill of Rights day
Thanks!

Let's act like this is a free country
We just need to get enough support to have bombs on all these days!
However, instead of buy nothing day...lets call it..."Buy American Day!" Or "Buy Ron Paul Day!" Buy Ron Paul stuff!
The $4mil we collected today was about 38,000 people giving $105. I know we can do better than that! If each of us finds one person for each of these and says "I'll go 50/50 with you" Who can't afford $52.50?
We can do at least as well as we did yesterday! And you know full well once they get the message they'll be wanting to give more! I know we all would love to see Ron Paul raise more than Hillary in the 4th Quarter! That would blow the media's MINDS!

Bill of Rights Day
Bill of Rights Day for December sounds great.
It ties in with the message of this Revolution very well, and would spotlight the very important Constitutional Rule of Law in this country.
DEC. 16th for the DEC. Money Bomb Day has my vote.

I am onboard with the community
Whatever date the community sets, I'm there.
I have a preference for Bill of Rights Day, Dec 15 because it represents all of my positive feelings for this campaign.
Boston Tea Party sounds fun, too.
I say make it a 2 day double bomb!
Yes, let's vote...discuss...over next several days to generate a consensus. I am onboard for what the community decides.
combining the two dates
combining the two dates would work great!!!!

As a Veteran, I concur with Dec 15-16
Before this was brought to my attention, I was all on board for the second money bomb being Veterans Day. But, now that I look at this wrt Bill of Rights Day and Boston Tea Party Day, I strongly believe those are much better dates for the second money bomb. Nov 11 is too close to this one and in the same month. Let's let the media and neocons squirm a bit longer before we light the next fuse.
Set detonation for the next Money Bomb to December 15-16.

BOSTON TEA PARTY
HAS MY VERY BIG VOTE. Indeed, I was thinking that it was ideal before today. It is a highly recognizable day in history for most AMERICANS.
By the way, there are always problems with getting enough money. People can set aside money for a day like this. It also gives people who have really spent a lot today time to catch up and plan for another big day. In addition, if we are all doing our job to promote Dr. Paul on a one-to-one basis and door to door, and getting him the votes for the primary (even much more important than the money! NEVER FORGET), there should be a larger potential donor base.
If you set a day too soon, you fatigue your willing and cheerful donors.
Go for the Boston Tea Party!
I tend to like this
I like the Boston Tea Party association.
I STRONGLY dislike the anti-capitalist feel of "buy nothing day."

More stategic dates
I would strongly recommend Nov. 27th or Dec. 3rd. These are the days before the next two GOP debates. This would give Dr. Paul more ammunition when he has the stage and a national audience. We can force all the pre-debate media buzz to be centered on Dr. Paul's fundraising.
No matter how much we raise today, we're still at the mercy of the national media to bother to cover it. I'm still skeptical that they'll say much of anything, or else they'll find some way to conveniently dismiss it.
Originally I was very excited about today's money bump, but much less so after the debate that was scheduled for tomorrow was postponed. (I'm very excited again now that the day's here though!)
From a campaign strategy perspective, I'd like to see a date chosen that will amplify the message and make campaigning easier for Dr. Paul and HQ, not just a convenient historical or calendar day. My guess is we can't do much better than a day prior to a national debate.
