Russia invades Georgia. Mexico invades Texas

The title delivers some bad news, but at least it's not our Georgia. Today Russia invaded the nation (and former Soviet republic) of Georgia. Georgia had been seeking NATO membership, and has been regarded as a United States Ally. If Georgia were in NATO right now, the United States, through NATO, would have been obliged to go to war with Russia.

Meanwhile, on the home front, Mexican troops have had repeated incursions into Texas. One of the most recent incidents was on August 6, 2008. In this incident Mexican troops held an American border Patrol officer at gunpoint. Given that such incidents have become routine, one would think that the most powerful military in the world would be serving it's primary function, and securing their homeland's border.

I am not, for a moment, concerned that the Mexican military will soon conquer the United States of America. Rather, the fact that such a modest military as Mexico's can invade with such ease, sends a signal, to the world, that invading the USA would be a piece of cake.

So, again, where are the United States armed forces when foreign troops are rolling across our border? All over the world, of course. For decades we have been busy defending countries that were fully capable of looking after their own affairs: Japan, Korea, and the countries of the European Union. Most recently the Iraqi occupation has consumed our military readiness, our wealth, and our youth.

So what does that have to do with Russia invading Georgia? Georgia had 2000 troops stationed in Iraq. The Georgians sacrificed their own border security to help with the US lead occupation. Georgia's president is recalling its troops to defend their own border. Perhaps our president should do the same.
