The bloody loin from meat videoSubmitted by racertim23 on Mon, 08/11/2008 - 15:09
Any chance the moderator can change the picture to something less graphic. The video worked for me, but the chunk of meat that looks like a bloody arm is...............?
Here is the email I sent to my friends and family after watching the video-
Subject- Farm to Fridge
Below is a very disturbing video about how inhumane we have become towards our treatment of animals for food. Now I am the first to admit that I love a good steak wrapped in bacon, or big glass of milk with some cookies. But after watching this video, I feel we can and should do better in how we as a society resource our food supply.
The video is narrated by Alec Baldwin and at the end he promotes Vegetarianism. That wont happen any time soon for most of us, but we should also be aware that our current Western World diet has diminished our vegetable intake, and that in many other places around the world where vegetable and fruit intake are higher, cancer is lower.
The proof is all over the Internet, search it if you like. If you were to graph the rise of cancer next to the decline of fruits and vegetables and/or chemically treated drinking water the proof is undeniable.
So what do we do? How do we make it better? To each their own on this. I think awareness always self corrects any wrong doings. For me, today I am calling some local butchers and asking how can I buy meat guaranteed to be raised and slaughtered more ethically.
I know my Sister and Brother in-law purchased a hand raised Kobe steer and had it butchered. This animal was raised on a farm, given antibiotics if only needed, roamed free in a clean non diseased environment. They paid a premium price for the steer, paid to have it butchered and in the end the price for the meat with out mass transportation, advertising and regimental antibiotics was very price competitive to the supermarkets. It was just a larger investment up front.
Maybe the best way to start is to share a steer or pig and farm raised chickens are easy to buy if just go to the smaller markets. I know from the bottom of my heart, the friends and family on this email list are better then the minimal standards today's society deems acceptable.
The thing I took away most from this video, is the workers. I know this is just a job, and someone does have to do it, but what kind of character will this person share with our society. What are their standards for life, what will they teach their children to be acceptable?
Our general way of life has systemic repercussions on what we do to our world, our society, our children and their children. I write these letters in hopes we all don't just go about living our life for us, and that our responsibilities are to our children's children are realized.
Have a nice day, please watch the video. It is disturbing, but only once you watch it completely (8min), will you know what inspired me to write this email.
