U.S.and Poland sign missile shield deal
Fri Aug 15, 2008 By Gabriela Baczynska
WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland finally agreed on Thursday to host elements of U.S. global anti-missile system on its territory after Washington improved the terms of the deal amid the Georgia crisis.
The preliminary deal was signed by deputy Polish Foreign Minister Andrzej Kremer and U.S. chief negotiator John Rood. It still needs to be endorsed by the Polish parliament.
The signing comes after Prime Minister Donald Tusk had been holding out for enhanced military cooperation with the United States in return for consent to host 10 interceptor rockets at a base in northern Poland.
Washington says the interceptors and a radar in the Czech Republic would form part of a global "missile shield" protecting the United States and its allies from long range missiles that could in the future be fired by Iran or groups such as al-Qaeda.
"We have crossed the Rubicon," Tusk said just before the deal was signed.
"We have finally got understanding of our point of view that Poland, being a crucial parner in NATO and an important friend and ally of the United States, must also be safe."
Officials said the deal included a U.S. declaration that it will aid Poland militarily in case of a threat from a third country and that it would establish a permanent U.S. base on Polish soil in a symbolic gesture underlining the alliance.
"We are comfortable that we negotiated a strong agreement," Rood said. "It elevates our security relationship to a new level."
RUSSIA VEHEMENTLY OPPOSED
If everything goes to schedule, the interceptor base would be ready by around 2012, officials have said. The Czechs have already signed an agreement to host the radar although parliament there must yet ratify it.
Russia has vehemently opposed placing the shield installations in central Europe, saying they would threaten its security and upset the post-Cold War balance of power in Europe.
Moscow has threatened to take retaliatory steps against Poland and the Czech Republic, its former reluctant vassals who are now part of the European Union and NATO.
In the face of Russian opposition, Tusk had argued he could not agree to the shield unless the United States agreed to boost Warsaw's air defences and enhance mutual military cooperation.
Russia's military action against Georgia strengthened the argument, Tusk said on Tuesday, ahead of the talks this week.
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski played down the impact of the events in Georgia on the deal, apparently hoping to soften any criticism from Moscow.
In the first sign of Moscow's displeasure, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday cancelled a planned trip to Warsaw in September, Polish diplomats said.
The deal, if approved by parliaments in Prague and Warsaw, will be a rare success for President George W. Bush who has argued it is essential to contain the threat of a potentially nuclear-armed Iran.
Washington hopes the shield might persuade Iran to abandon its nuclear programme, although Teheran says it wants to develop nuclear energy only to generate electricity and not to make nuclear weapons.

I heard
I heard the press briefing from the White House and it was such a joke. The girl could barely read through the script because there were so many lies in it. The biggest one of all was that Russia wouldn't be upset by this because it has nothing to do with Russia because the missile shield would only be used for rockets fired from rogue elements, because the missile shield was small. The Next Move: China
This doesn't completely relate to the current topic, and yet it does as we see the chess pieces being assembled around Eurasia.
I was thinking about the world's situation this morning, and I do wonder if China could be the next country to make a move. While we talk about our own government's desire to wage war as a diversion for economic problems, China has an even stronger case. The US recession and rising transportation costs are hurting their economy badly -- far worse than they are letting on as they don't want to damage the image of the Olympics in any way. It is also known that they have been stockpiling gold for the past few years -- another clear sign of preparing for war.
It should also be noted that China has a huge population of single men who are of fighting age -- a standing army of over 200 million men (I am not sure of the latest count). With their population control laws limiting family sizes to one child, they have been killing baby girls with abandon for the past several decades because males are preferred in their culture. Not to be crass, but these men would be very interested in the spoils of war -- namely, the women of their enemies whose husbands will be killed.
As if all of these reasons were not enough, they are also facing serious space constraints and an insatiable need for a secure oil supply. Once the Olympics are complete, keep a close eye on China. They have compelling reasons to wage war, and unlike us, they have the resources to support a large scale war. Bush may want to start a war, but I am not sure that it is actually a truly viable option anymore. Armies require supplies and that requires wealth -- something we are rapidly running out of. We are also already engaged in a two front war -- Iraq and Afghanistan.
So where would China strike? Here is one possible scenario: Pakistan. India and China have been having a lot of talks lately and are starting to show increased signs of friendliness. More conjecture here, but bear with me. Iran, China, and Russia are all diplomatically linked. Iran has been in private negotiations with Iraq. With China in Pakistan working in conjunction with Iran, our soldiers in Afghanistan are completely surrounded and cut off from the rest of the world. A full insurrection in Iraq against our troops there would immobilize them, and Iran has already warned of closing off the Persian Gulf limiting support from the sea. If Russia continues to retake former republics, they could even make their presence felt in Iraq from the north. It is not a pretty scenario.
We cannot expect Russia and China to just idly sit back while we try to expand our empire. This is their backyard, after all, and they have a vested interest in it as well. Bush has overextended our troops, and we might just lose them all because of his folly.
I'm wondering if these news stories are planted
and completely fake. Poland's governing body voted to not have shields placed in Poland. Now lo and behold they've agreed ? Also it's reported that Libya agreed to compensation for the Lockerbie victims even though the investigation was reopened in Scotland with the US as the main suspect?
Edit: this yet has to be ratified by the Polish parlaiment.
I happen to be born and raised in Poland
its a US "friend" because they control the top people.
the whole elite is controlled by US.......sad....
the 5 presidents from central and eastern Europe who came to Georgia are all US agents...........

WTF!!!????????????? What is
WTF!!!?????????????
What is with these "deals" and deployments. We better impeach that Bush so that this crap becomes invalid! WHOSE IDEAS are all these deals?? Lest they forget this country is run BY the PEOPLE..NOT a person! If any country is smart they would sign NO deals with us unless WE VOTE FIRST!
The Senate
Presumably the Senate has to approve by a 2/3 super-majority. But they'll probably skip that formality.
Breaking News: Rifle shield around Washington
One day soon we will need to surround Washington with a million rifles. If things keep going as they are we will have no other option. This is seriously alarming. What will it take America?
These people will not stop until they destroy us all.

Ukraine
Hi everyone, I posted about 2 months ago from ukraine, don't think many people saw it, but most people don't understand that more than half of Ukrainians want strong ties with Russia, speak russian, and identify themselves as russian. the only way ukraine enters the european union, in my opinion, is if ther is a civil war and the country splits. If this happens, then the west which is mostly agricultral, will go to europe, and the industrial east will go to russia.

Can our empire afford another offshore military base?
Yeah, We Can
We will just keep printing it until bread is 50.00 a loaf. What's a few million homeless or poverty stricken people to them? Maybe, all of this IS intentional. Maybe, they are trying to speed everything along, so we can merge, after all that's why Bushie is such good friends with Vicinte Fox, right?
Sigh
Who amongst us can translate?
"Officials said the deal included a U.S. declaration that it will aid Poland militarily in case of a threat from a third country and that it would establish a permanent U.S. base on Polish soil in a symbolic gesture underlining the alliance."
