I have an issue with the number of donors though.. its not 12,000 it is much higher.. but a good map anyway.

That´s because for the maps he counts only the names that actually appear in the widget (with their respective states!). In times of high donor numbers a great amount of donors slip through without beeing mentioned and since there´s no way to know which state they were from those can´t be incorporated in the maps. However on the main page there´s also a graph with the exact total of donors.
