Ethnic Studies? Just say NO!

0 votes

There is a debate raging in Tucson, AZ between Tom Horne, the State School Superintendent, and Augustine Romero, the Senior Director of Ethnic Studies. Horne is trying to shut down the ethnic studies (also called raza studies) program in the Tucson Unified School District.

I have weighed in with the following definitions in my Devil's Dictionary, www.axiomaticeconomics.co...

Horne, Tom: “I believe people are individuals, not exemplars of racial groups… It is fundamentally wrong to divide students up according to their racial group and teach them separately.” I agree. If the $2.6M Tucson spends on raza studies were spent on honors math classes instead, there might be more of an audience for my Simplified Exposition, which has proven to be not so simple for students who have spent their lives wallowing in victimhood instead of trying to pull themselves up by their bootstraps in a math class. See Romero, Augustine.

Romero, Augustine: “Through the creation of this new [ethnic] identity and the development of a sense of purpose, our [raza studies] students develop a sense of hope.” Well, sorry to burst your bubble Romero, but I already have an identity (defined by the Mises Institute as “that asshole who criticized Austrian economics”), I already have a sense of purpose, promoting my book, and I already have a sense of hope. I hope that the $2.6M Tucson spends on raza studies will be spent on honors math classes instead, so there might be more of an audience for my Simplified Exposition, which has proven to be not so simple for students who have spent their lives wallowing in victimhood instead of trying to pull themselves up by their bootstraps in a math class. See Horne, Tom.

For reference, both men contributed to the 10 August 08 Viewpoints section of the Arizona Republic newspaper.

On 17 August 2008, Arizona Republic columnist Doug MacEachern exposed Romero's "studies" showing that raza students outperform their peers as smoke and mirrors.

"The two pages of bar charts and the brief paragraphs that accompany them (prepared, according to the [Tucson school] district, by Romero himself) simply don't provide enough information to know whether the raza-studies program 'contributed, harmed or had no effect on the achievement of students who selected to participate in it,' Greene [head of the department of education reform at the University of Arkansaw] wrote."

In support of MacEachern and Green, I have added the following definition to my Devil's Dictionary of Economics:

MacEachern, Doug: “The [Tucson, AZ] school district itself defends the program’s academic value with this statement: ‘Research regarding Raza Studies students have found they outscored their peers in reading, writing and math as measured by the state’s academic accountability exam (AIMS).’ Had the claim been true, it would have constituted a rare objective justification for the district’s ethnic studies program. But the claim of proof-positive academic improvement is not true.” See Horne, Tom.

For reference, see the article, "Smoke and mirrors obscure raza studies," in the Viewpoints section of the 17 August 2008 Arizona Republic.

Daily Paul bloggers!

Let's rally around Tom Horne! This is a local Tucson issue now, but that doesn't mean that ethnic studies won't be coming to your high school tomorrow! Write a letter to the Arizona Republic supporting Horne's efforts to rid the schools of ethnic studies.

THanks for the info... I

THanks for the info... I saved it and will contact them tomorrow... kinda late now.... BTW this "Raza" thing goes way beyond the preservation of cultural integrity... it's actually a movement to take back all the land that America "stole" from Mexico (as they see it)... these people don't consider themselves Americans nor are they interested in being faithful citizens of the US... I learned this from a HIspanic woman I sat next to on an airplaine who is involved in politics in CA.... Very impressive woman. She also told me that we were not alone in our stance against illegal immigration, etc.... there are many Hispanic citizens feeling the same way... it's just not brought up in the media.

bump

Yes, Raza goes way beyond just the issue in Tucson.

But that's a good place to start. C'mon, everybody! Let's prove that the Ron Paul movement can have an effect on local politics.

It's not just a debating club, people, it's a political movement. Get political!

First of all you need to get

First of all you need to get your black history straight... the people that sold slaves to the white people were BLACK!!!! There has always been tribal infighting in Africa it wasn't just the evil white man that forced the blacks on the ship... what about the BLACK SLAVE TRADERS that got rich of the slave trade? So please, it's not just about the evil white man...

If you look around the world you will see evil happening in all countries worse than what has happened in America... how about the Chinese forcing parents to kill their second child? The genocide in Darfur? I could go on about the evil that happens around the world. The problem is that humanity is inherently evil. And you complain about someone not liking your skin color! That is a lame argument!

I'll tell you what is racism... racism is when a person applies for a job and is qualified but since they are not black or hispanic they will have to give it up to a LESSER qualified person... that's racism. Racism is when a person who has a 4.0 GPA doesn't get the financial aid for college because she's white and she is the only one in her class making a passing grade because all the other hispanics in class are too busy partying with their financial aid money...

NONE BUT PAUL!

Desiree is right. Cameron is wrong.

Desiree writes, "The people that sold slaves to the white people were BLACK!!!! There has always been tribal infighting in Africa it wasn't just the evil white man that forced the blacks on the ship... what about the BLACK SLAVE TRADERS that got rich of the slave trade?"

That is true. The White slave traders never ventured into the interior of Africa. They purchased slaves at the port, where there was, and had always been, an active trade among the Blacks themselves.

And you know what, Cameron? There is still an active slave trade in Africa. If you want to hassle someone, why don't you go to Africa and hassle the people who are currently involved in the slave trade.

But you hassle Desiree. Why? She's guilty because someone of her race might have owned a slave 400 years ago?

Yes...the racism of getting

Yes...the racism of getting racial preference for a job FAR outweigh the racism of 400 years of slavery. You are right.

Why am I responsible

for events that took place 400 years ago?

The Human Race

As far as I understand biology, there is only ONE human race.
Finer divisions amount to family differences. If you want to celebrate your family's history, or your culture, or heritage, or what have you on your own dime, go for it! If you want to orchestrate organized investigations of your family et cetera, still fine, as long as you aren't using my money.

As a matter of policy for the last few decades I've made it my practice to either completely ignore questions about "race" or describe myself as "human" or "Anglo-Romulan." When the Census Bureau asks they get only a number in response, that number being the quantity of live humans residing at a particular address. This is the only datum that the Census Bureau is Constitutionally authorized to collect.

LXXI BC: Ego sum Spartacus // MDCCCLVII: I am Dred Scott // MCMVL: Ich bin Anne Frank // MMX: Je suis Assange // MMXI: Ik ben von NotHaus

That's a good idea

I hate having to put down a race. I'm of the human race and when I have to fill in I always want to fill in every square. Peace

Me too. I'm "white - non

Me too. I'm "white - non hispanic & something else (can't remember what it exactly says)", but why does it matter. I am an American. The whole idea of hyphenated Americans seems silly.

If we hyphenate our backgrounds, I am a Polish-Austrian-English-French-and I don't remember what else-American. I'm descended from Charlemagne, Johann Strauss, and someone who was on the Mayflower.

I have checked "White, Non-Hispanic"

on every school application and job application that I've ever filled out.

African American Literature

I'm frustrated with my college because they force us to take african american literature. The main issue I have with it is that the main focus of the class is Fredrick Douglas and Equiano (who's "biography" is nothing but made up lies"). I'd be fine with the class if there was a little Booker T. Washington or something maybe but it just seems a little ridiculous. Why not civil war literature or Revolutionary war or WW2 or Irish Folk tales?

Change schools.

Ron Paul "Sign Wave Across the USA" -- November 5th!

Hmmm, Not sure how

I feel about all this. I agree people are individuals and I also know people have a pride in their heritage. I can understand both sides especially after waking up from all the lies from MSM. After doing some reading I also know our history books are fairytales. Like George Bush said he wasn't worried about how history would portray him. Why, because he would tell them what to write. I don't have the answers because this is rather over my head. It seems that it would be a job of the parents to educate their children about their heritage. Making sure to tell them about their family history and culture. Who better to be the teacher than the people who live it. It would be nice if there could be some Heritage Celebration where children could come together and each share information and activities to promote understanding.

Personally, that is what I have always admired MOST about America all the different cultures. There was a time no where else in the world was as diverse. I always thought that was kinda neat. How boring to live somewhere everyone was exactly the same. Especially, eating out at all the different restaurants. LOL There is so much we could learn from one another if we could get past some stuff. I have a feeling all this chaos in put out there on purpose. If we are fighting each other those in power stand back and laugh. Peace

I'm Hispanic so I'm happy to

I'm Hispanic so I'm happy to speak the way I do.... I'm sick and tired of "minorities" feeling entitled to everything simply because they are part of a "minority" that's one reason why I'm part of this Movement. We are for freedom of the individual and RP spoke in depth about this... he's not for "groups" and neither is the Constitution...

So there... stop your whiny trash talk about "racism"... let's tell our so called "raza" compadres that if they get off their butts, quit living on the system, get out there, go to school and work hard, they'll do just fine and maybe great, just like the rest of them out there... there's always gonna be someone who hates you, so what? I'm happy in my brown skin and nobody's gonna change that....

It alternative viewpoints

It alternative viewpoints arent taught, then the default white american history will be able to flourish without question.

Whatever.

Get off your racial pony. Yeah, let's just divide everyone into groups and while everyone is screaming look at me!!! I AM DIFFERENT!!! Give me something for nothing!!! Meanwhile... YOUR individual rights are being stolen from you. Without individual rights, you have nothing. Not even a right to have a debate on viewpoints. Dont fall into the collective mindset it's a trap that steals your individual rights.

We should seek the truth.

I accepted the "Lincoln story" without question. Now, I have a better grasp of the real man and I'm not so impressed.

I don't want alternative viewpoints. If the truth of a story happens to be an all-white one, so be it. If not, fine. Give me facts, not your smarmy politically-correct world.

Confess, Cameron. You supported Hillary.

If AMERICA is to become; as

If AMERICA is to become; as the elite schoolars are & have been preaching , (a nation of brotherhood), then definately "RAZA" must be eliminated. These studys in themselves show a complete lack of union

Ethnic Studies

Ethnic Studies are used to counter the systematic racism that exists in this country. Its so the white default isnt the only thing kids are exposed to.

You advocate

Racism with you views.. You fight for the wrong team. You should be fighting for individual rights, instead of rights for colors. While your busy with colors, your individual rights are being stolen from you. Soon you wont have any rights, none of us will, because people like you are fighting for the collective group. Do you think in a communist country, they have the NAACP or Gay Pride Parades? Who do you think they come for first? The collective groups first. Minorities. Gays. Dissenters. Teachers. Professors. Doctors. You need to wake up Cameron. We are being censored on certain websites, we are being spied on. We are losing the 1st the 4th, ect and we are being lied to on a continuous basis. The mere fact that we are here and having this discussion should be enough for you. Fight for individual rights, or you wont have a right to fight for anything.

Best way to handle this is

Best way to handle this is to: eliminate income tax or eliminate war on drugs. This would help.

Clearly, there are many things we disagree on.
