We Need to Create a New Third Party.

The Libertarian Party seems to be in a crisis of leadership and the Constitution Party needs platform work badly. Both would be minor issues if Ron Paul followers were interested in taking over either party and retooling it. But there seems little interest in that out there.

And the idea of taking over the GOP from within seems to be fizzling, too (-thanks be to God).

So the logical thing, in my opinion, to reenergize the movement would be to create a new Third Party that purifies the message, that adopts Ron Paul's ideas and constitutionalism intact. We have the numbers and the energy.

Discuss, flame, throw rocks..let's talk about it.

umbrella party

What we need is a party that's a umbrella party for all the other third parties. Basicly anybody that is not a Democrat or Republican. All the parties can be the different legs of the overall party. The goal would be to work together to take down the two major parties. We'll work our differences out amoung ourselves.

Like a coalition party? How

Like a coalition party? How would that work? I'm honestly curious.

I've always felt that the

I've always felt that the only way third parties will ever have a chance is to work together. There are many third parties around with the same basic idea of working to preserve the constitution, but each is too weak to stand alone.

We would have to come up with a way that all the different legs of the party are represented fairly since it is a coalition rather than a party in the traditional sense.

One immediate benefit would be the ability to get over the hurdle of ballot access in each state. Working together would make it much easier to achieve.

I agreed with the new party

I agreed with the new party concept and planned to dump the GOP and register independent UNTIL I met some of the Republican activists in my county. They are intellgent, well read and devoted to Ron Paulitics and the Constitution. We aren't going to take over the state this election, but we are making some serious in-roads. They are taking over the Republican State Central Committee one member at a time and have approved a resolution to call on the Feds to dissolve the Federal Reserve and to return to the gold standard. There are a few people squalling over it, but the right mindset is clear and is gaining ground. Taking over the GOP is not going to be easy, but nothing worth while is ever easy. It can be done and if McWar goes down in flames either in September or November it should cause enough chaos within the party to give us even better openings to get RP people into key positions. We are going to lose battles along the way, we must stay focussed on winning the war.

Bam!

Ok so this really does NOT produce a third party. However this process is more effective at producing political change and does not require nearly as much time and money.

P.S. We have a party. Are you committed enough to take it back? If you are a group of like mined people with be in Minneapolis during the REPUBLICAN CONVENTION. Join the Campaign for Liberty.

I think an intital and key step would be to

come up with a name that captures the essense of people's frustration.

How about the:
Abolish Washington Party.

There is no one name. But a

There is no one name. But a coalition of state parties could spell it out.

If all these state parties popped up with the same platform and principles but with a different name. The name can encompass a particular aspect to what the greater movement is about.

Abolish Washington says it all only if you understand what it means to begin with. Now you have to define what abolishing Washington is.

Localized state parties can focus on issues that effect their region at the grassroots level. In places where people are successfully working with the incumbent parties, 3rd/state parties are not as needed. In other states where you can't get a foot in the door. 3rd/state parties makes a lot more sense.

"But, indeed, no private person has a right to complain, by suit in court, on the ground of a breach of the Constitution. The Constitution it is true, is a compact, but he is not a party to it."

If absolutely nothing except

If absolutely nothing except full capitulation and resignation by all its current leaders, in favor of limited Government candidates both intellectually and ethically as pure as Dr. Paul is acceptable, you may well be right; ‘taking over’ the GOP will prove nearly impossible. The problem is, no organization of the size required to win the presidency will ever be that pure and coherent. The majors are majors precisely because they are not so exclusive and righteous. They are comprised of internal factions, united more by fear of losing to ‘the other guy’ than by commonality in shared outlook.

A large portion of each of the majors’ voters simply aren’t up for grabs. Their whole identity is so tied to being a Republican, or a Democrat, that the social and psychological dissonance of switching party affiliation is simply too much. Most of us are young, with relatively fluent identities, so we may not easily appreciate the problem of converting someone who has spent a lifetime of dinner parties and water cooler gatherings arguing for one party; into accepting it was all for naught, and turn to support an unknown third party. And the elders among us are often lifetime libertarians, who have spent our lives ‘supporting Ron Paul’ anyway.

The beauty of working within the GOP is we don’t have to convert these people. They will continue to vote Republican whether the party platform is neocon or Ron Paulian. It doesn’t matter to them, as long as it’s Republican. So, instead of converting 60+ million voters into supporters of an unknown third party, all we have to do is grow the movement large enough to become an indispensable GOP voting bloc. Then, essentially, the GOP will win if we are happy with their platform, lose if we are not. As tight as elections generally are, this requires a heck of a lot less conversions than 60 million.

Stuki gets the picture.

Libertarian Party.....

Crisis of leadership? They have never been in such a strong position as they are now, and they are actually starting to get noticed finally - and if Barr gets over 5% of the vote in November - in four years from now they wont have to spend 90% of their time and money on simply getting on the ballot, reason enough for me to say lets work within the LP. If you start another 3rd party - in four years we'd be doing the same thing the LP has been doing the past 30 years, fighting for ballot access and being marginalized as insignifigant at every turn.

Organizers of the Revolution March 2008, The Rally for the Republic, and the March on the White House 2012 have teamed up with Entertainment Pros to create PAUL FEST! A Celebration of Freedom big enough to Change The World! http://www.paulfestival.org/

The LP is in a strong

The LP is in a strong position only because of eight years of George W. Bush, and they are getting noticed because, for the first time, their presidential candidate is someone that the establishment and the lapdog media find palatable.

Of course how "strong" a 3-6% showing is, is debatable.

Interesting point

Thanks

It won't be

any easier to do it with a new 3rd party, or any 3rd party.

The opposition and obstacles will be there just the same, and there are more hurdles to overcome as a 3rd party, than with the major parties.

The idea that a 3rd party is somehow better is a construct of the imagination. It is not reality.
The whole deck is stacked against any 3rd party from the start.
I hear all the nay-sayers saying "They OWN the major parties", or "They won't let us take over", or "they'll stop us with corruption".
Well, this ain't about what they will "let" us do, or what they "own". It's about what we can take. And if we can't take it from a major party, we'll never take it on the national scale and win.
The corruption will be there, and be against us in a major party or in a 3rd party. You don't avoid the corruption by being in a 3rd party. It will happen to you when the polls open, and the votes are counted, and you wonder why you didn't get any votes. You'll wonder why you didn't get on the ballot. You'll wonder why you didn't get into the debates.
It is no easier as a 3rd party. Period.

If you don't have it in you for the struggle, then it won't matter what you pick. This is the "big boys" game, and you'd better be tough enough to beat them with no holds barred, because no holds are barred.
If you have the gumption, the easiest path is thru a major party, by taking it over. They have smoothed the path for the major parties, and to inhibit progress of 3rd parties.
Like it or not, the easiest way in, is thru a major party.

I know some of you don't want to hear that, but there it is.

It's not a ballroom dance with rules of etiquette.
It's a knife fight in the mud at 3am and somebody isn't going to live.
That's the analogy, and it is best to recognize what we're getting into.

Weird macho stuff. It's a

Weird macho stuff. It's a knife fight at 3 AM--so let's join the opposition and "infiltrate"? How does one infiltrate during a knife fight?

You're welcome to believe whatever you want. It isn't going to be easy taking either route. The third party approach gives clarity of ideas and an unmuddled message that you can explain to the uninitiated.

Politics is salesmanship, not a knife fight.

Third Parties

Kevin,
We don't need another third party. What we need is to change the ballot access laws in each state so that they are on the same footing with the Dems and Reps. Having been involved in the third party movement for more than 30 yrs at the local and state level and as a candidate for city, county, state and federal office you have no idea the amount of time, energy and money it takes to geta third party on the ballot. Ask the Libertarians, Constitutionalist, Greens, Reform, Natural Law and others. If you are lucky you may get perminemt ballot status in 10 to 15 states. The other 35 to 40 states you will spend millions of dollars to get a candidate on the ballot. That is why Dr. Paul did not go third party. He and I and thousands of others have been there and done that

Voluntary Association + Mutual Cooperation + 110% Personal Responsibility = 100% Individual Liberty

We do need another Third

We do need another Third Party--almost all the ones you cited above are 99% dead (or stillborn). Whatever symbolic argument listing them is supposed to represent doesn't wash.

We aren't the United Fascist Union or the Socialist Worker's Party. We're the Ron Paul Revolution...bigger, much bigger, than any of those parties above ever could be--and we should consider having our own official party.

It doesn't matter if there are three Third Parties or 30,000---the only one that counts will be the one that starts to WIN. None have done much in recent history, aside from the Greens and the Reform Party...both of which are reverting to ghost towns like the others. The Libertarian Party and the Constitution Party have never broken the one-percent barrier. One percent is just a tiny notch above zero percent.

There is nothing to lose in consideration of another party. But of course third parties face special hurdles set in their way by the Democrats and the Republicans.

Maybe senior Congressman Paul, who has stated he has always supported Third Parties as an idea, can help introduce new legislation that helps them gain ballot access.

Indeed, the time is right!

Never before, have so many been discontent with the 2 party puppet show, and never before have so many people realized what a grand hoax is being pulled over on us. Never before, have so many people understood the seedy nature of our Federal Government and the backroom control by the International Planners of the World (i.e. CFR). Ron Paul went a long way to bring some important issues to light, such as our fraudulent monetary system in the hands of the Federal Reserve. And Ron Paul woke many a sleeping couch potato, and especially some young ones who have not been so well indoctrinated by the 6 O'clock news boys. But change will not come about as long as we adhere to the 2 party system. They are just too well controlled. At this point, I don't think we'll ever see a President Ron Paul, but his efforts, and for his Statesman like stance should be honored with the naming of an official new party - The Ron Paul Party. Who dares challange his integrity? By naming the new party after Ron Paul, even the name will bring immediate definition of the platforms we embrace. Truth, transparancy, Constitutional Rights. Look, Ross Perot got 20% of the vote one time, and he's never been elected to anything. I hate to step on toes, but if Ron Paul would have had a professional team on his campaign, we could have pulled this off!

Staying in the GOP is a good

Staying in the GOP is a good decision for Dr. Paul. He is a senior Congressman and he stands to gain much from the power shift in Washington next January.

In my opinion, staying in the GOP is not a good decision for the movement itself. The whole reason the Ron Paul Revolution took off like a skyrocket was the strength of his ideas--and the stark contrast between Ron Paul and a typical neo-con, big government stooge like Romney or McCain.

Ron Paul's ideas are our ideas. But his ideas are not his party's ideas. If we take a risk, a gamble, on creating a new party, we can have ideological clarity---and it will be far easier to explain our ideas to the outside world. I believe this advantage outweighs the inherent disadvantages in following a Third Party path.

I really do not think there is a crisis of leadership in the LP: there is a difference of opinion. When a party becomes larger, there is destined to be different factions. The LP is not a debating society anymore.

I hold a difference of

I hold a difference of opinion on that too. The "Big Tent" is just too big now. I don't support the anarcho-caps, either, but at least they have a consistent philosophy, which the 'Refugees from Bush' faction, new to libertarianism, does not. Barr and Root are both refugees from the Bush era of government, who exhibit very little understanding of even the basic concepts of libertarian thought. Cartoonist Scott Bieser aptly dubbed them "the Conservatoids".

To be fair, there was a crisis of leadership in the LP for many years before Barr. It has simply expanded into an identity crisis as well.

Nice point

While I do support anarcho-capitalists, you correctly point out that they have a coherent and conistent philosophy, and that Barr and Root are very muddled and confused philosophically.

I honestly wonder if either of them has read a book on libertarianism.

You

will find those anarchists in the LP dissatisfied with Barr, would also be critical of Dr. Paul. They are strongly libertine, pro-choice etc. and are the ones that would never want to merge with the CP.

My take,

a third party based on basic limited-govt., non-interventionist foreign policy, civil liberty party could be a possibility. The CP and LP has in the past marginalised themselves to a certain extent, apart from the problem with lack of money.
Dr. Paul's decision to stay in the GOP and work together with third party groups in an "alliance" is IMHO the right one. For this election, the strengths of the CP, LP and of Nader in different regions will be tested, which is good.
After November, and depending on the outcome, I think Barr (LP), Baldwin (CP) and Nader (not their VP's) but also the Reform Party and newsly formed Independence Parties of New York and Minnesota should come together and see how one can merge together to form a freedom/libertarian p[arty, with a basic and small basic platform, so all can agree on that and allow for differences on non-essential issues.

I have thought about the name Freedom Party before, but now I wonder whether the name Independence Party would not be better, e.g. it is a patriotic name, referring to the first American revolution and there is now already an Independence Party organized in two states. There will always be those radicals in the parties that would not join and they can stay simply continue with their greatly diminished parties. A new name does not carry any baggage.

Nelson Hultberg wrote a book about what a third party can look like. One has to combine libertarian (classic liberal) policy together with conservative values. Barr, Baldwin and others can then be possible leaders and the party should identify a few districts where it can field candidates for congress and senate in 2010 where it can really has the potential to win. There are already a few Independence Party candidates in Minnesota, also for senate. One has to see who wins the primary for their senate candidate.

This will put in more pressure on the GOP and Democratic parties. If neither of the parties move towards a non-interventionist, fiscal conservative direction, then this new party would have a strong potential and can accept defections from either existing major party.

As I sit

Reading this comment a sense of dread fills my heart. I will fight to change the Republican party. Why?

Americans are lazy. One must look at the big picture and realize this message cannot be hidden and thrown away with a third party bookshelf.
If we, supporters of liberty and the constitution go underground hiding ourselves in the cloak of third party obscurity then we truly have failed.

John Q. doesn't care about third parties and I think Ron Paul knew this. Its Democraps VS Repoopicans. I would have tuned him out if he was just another third party hack. Yet it was his steadfast footing in the face of a mountain of ridicule that made the message in me click. This guy is a Republican fighting Republicans! How cool is that. He is working within the system and using it against itself.

No. No new third party. For that would silence our message for good and seal our fate's being labeled as such. I am a Republican. Ron Paul is a Republican. If Ron Paul is as such so to am I. I had to re due my party affiliation just to make sure I was in line with what Ron Paul was doing. It was a brilliant move. Only made good by a brilliant tactician.

Besides where is the fun in walking away.
I am here to takeover. The old guard hates the new with a great gnashing of teeth. I say Let them hate us as long as they fear us. I will be one of those who will stay and fight for the new. Will you? Will you run and hide in the face of adversity? Thats what I think when reading threads like these. Hiding.

I disagree

We need to destroy the 2 party system, the GOP and the DEM need to be shown for the liars and cheats and actual criminals they are, nothing more than a syndicate that needs to face the full force and legal ramifications that are warrented.
