Best PALEOconservative publication?

I'm looking for a paleoconservative magazine to subscribe to. So far my top choice is The American Conservative.

Any recommendations?

I like Chronicles, but it's a little heady and a little Catholicy. American Conservative is the best, though.

The American Conservative, hands down

www.amconmag.com

It is paleo-conservative with a libertarian leaning. Pat Buchanan is a friend of Ron Paul's and they are probably 98% in sync with each other.

RP2012!

It's debatable to me just how much the often-brilliant Mr. Buchanan is a true conservative. He attempts to self-identify as the quintessential American conservative, and his magazine hypes this idea, but in my opinion, he doesn't quite measure up. He's an erstwhile Nixon man, and Nixon wasn't a conservative at all.

The only real political conservative extant, in my opinion, is Ron Paul.

I agree that Nixon was no conservative,

but I have been following Buchanan since he ran against GHW Bush and he has grown more conservative through the years. He only just stopped short of personally endorsing Ron Paul and he appears weekly on the McLaughlin Group, where he always takes a stand for liberty as envisioned by the founders. Just this past Friday, in fact, he again presented the Paul campaign in a very positive light.
Indeed, I believe he would have endorsed Dr. Paul, if he thought it would have helped, but he may be more effective by maintaining his credibility within the corrupt MSM establishment. On balance, Buchanan is a patriot and a staunch defender of liberty.

I disagree that Ron is a 'conservative'

In the most classical definition of the word, conservatism has always stood for a defense of the status quo.

From what I can tell RP is a

fiscal-conservative and a civil-libertarian.

I know you have a problem

The status quo is big government socialism, so I think you're missing the mark.

But I know you have a problem with the word "conservative", and I'm not crazy about it, semantically, either. It has little current meaning at all in political terms. It's an abstraction. Bush is referred to as "conservative" and "far right wing" when he doesn't have a traditionalist conservative bone in his body.

But most people use Barry Goldwater as a yardstick for 'conservative'. Dr. Paul is similar in his philosophies.

I do agree that Ron Paul is more libertarian than conservative.

Definition of conservative

I find the definition that is implied (one who is for limited gov't and personal liberty) when using the term conservative towards people like Ron Paul is inaccurate on two counts:

1. Historically: the number of 'conservatives' who have fit this definition has been very low.

I can just think of a handful--Buffett, Goldwater, Reagan, and maybe Taft. Meanwhile, there have been thousands of other conservatives who value pretty much the opposite--moderate to big gov't and the sacrifice of personal liberty for the purpose of security.

2. Etymologically: The term has a specific root--conserve.

Thus when using the term for people like Ron, one is always fighting against the classical definition of one who wants to maintain the status quo.

I would actually recommend a libertarian publication

I find that paleo-conservatives compromise way too much when it comes to liberty (ie. Pat Buchanan).

Try the Freeman. Sheldon Richman is the editor-in-chief.

That may be,

but The American Conservative also has many paleo & libertarian contributors as well. I find that reading these different perspectives helps me solidify my own positions on the issues.

I also can't say enough good things about The New American from JBS. There is no better and more factual magazine in the world, IMHO.

Regardless of what you decide, I applaud you for becoming more infomed. I just wish more of our fellow citizens would do the same.

Cheers!
