What does "one of the only" mean?
This always mystifies me. The meaning of "the only" is crystal clear. "One of the few" clearly suggests a small number. But "one of the only" has no quantitative significance that I can detect. Last night at the ocean I noticed one of the only stars in the sky and at the very same moment spit out one of the only grains of sand at the beach. Oh forget it. I've noticed hardly anyone is swayed by such rants.
