Why did Ron endorse a pro-war Republican?

0 votes

Ron recently endorsed Don Young from Alaska for Congress.

Paul and Young are a bit of an odd couple. Paul is a fiscal conservative; Young believes in earmarking federal dollars for Alaska wherever possible. Paul opposes the Iraq war; Young supports it.

What is begun in anger, ends in shame.

this just in from ConservativeHQ (Richard Viguerie)

FOR RELEASE August 25, 2008

Richard Viguerie: Ron Paul endorsement of Don Young “shocking and disappointing;” Texas Congressman “put pork ahead of principle”

(Manassas, Virginia) By endorsing Congressman Don Young (R-Alaska) for reelection over his principled conservative challenger, Congressman Ron Paul (R-Texas) has put “pork ahead of principle,” Richard A. Viguerie said.

Viguerie, Chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, said the endorsement is “completely inconsistent with everything Congressman Paul has said that he stands for. But, unfortunately, it is consistent with his record of pork-barrel spending for the folks back home in his district.”

Viguerie noted that, according to a recent article in the Houston Chronicle, Paul “is trying to nab public money for 65 projects, such as marketing wild shrimp and renovating the old movie theater in Edna that closed in 1977 — neither of which is envisioned in the Constitution as an essential government function.”

(A list of Congressman Paul’s earmark requests for Fiscal 2009 has been posted at http://blogs.chron.com/txpotomac/2008/04/ron_pauls_earmarks_... .)

Young is extremely influential on congressional pork. He is the 7th most senior member of the House and the 3rd most senior Republican, and chaired the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee from 2001 until the Democratic takeover in 2007. He is currently the top Republican on the House Natural Resources Committee.

Paul is supporting Young against Sean Parnell, whom Viguerie called “a principled conservative reformer who will fight the ‘culture of corruption’ in Washington.”

In contrast, “Young represents the system of earmarking and pork-barrel spending that works hand-in-glove with Big Government against the interests of the people of Alaska and the entire nation.”

Young, who is under federal investigation for illegal gratuities and unreported gifts, is “a world-class porker, infamous for his Bridge to Nowhere and hundreds of millions in other earmarks,” Viguerie said.

“I have been a strong supporter of Ron Paul for many years, including naming him one of the nation’s up-and-coming leaders in a Conservative Digest magazine article I published almost 25 years ago,” Viguerie said. “His overall record on other issues far outweighed his atrocious use of earmarks for his own district.

“However, his endorsement of Don Young is something no conservative or libertarian can excuse. I’m sure I join many fans of Ron Paul who are shocked and disappointed by this decision.”

lets not forget

he was elected by his constituents.....and he needs to take care of them as well....you know...to keep his job......

The ear mark thing. Well,

The ear mark thing.

Well, the money for ear marks doesnt get added to the bill. It gets taken from the money that is already alotted to the bill.

He isnt asking for more money from tax payers. He is asking for the money that has already been taken to be distributed back into something that benefits the tax payers. On his own website, he says that as long as we are taxed, he will try to get that money coming back to us through these ear marks.

Dont be fooled by this post. Ron would rather the federal government have no funding than us be taxed. But I hope you all know that.

So by your logic.

if I steal money from a thief who stole it from somebody else, that is OK, because I didn't do the original stealing --- and besides, I am so much more important than everyone else, after all!

Disgusting rationalization of criminal behaviour and economic insanity.

nvrmnd

this thread is sick

Your illogic.

Your illogic doesn't allow you to recognize that if someone steals money from a community, going to him and taking that money back and redistributing it to the community is not stealing. It's the opposite of stealing.

Sorry, Pro-Fed

Robin Hood is not one who I would hold up as a paragon of moral behaviour.

That same perverted rationale is being used even as we speak by the kings of pork-barrel spending, Don Young and Ted Stevens, to justify their rape of the US Treasury for the narrow and selfish benefit of Alaska --- or more to the point, to the benefit of certain well-connected business interests of Alaska. "It's only our own money, after all!" Right --- with the government taking its cut along the way. And the money is hardly being redistributed equally or equitably --- it inevitably flows to those with the most power, or who work hand-in-hand with state and federal government.

Care to make any other pro-big-government arguments tonight?

If there was some way

to determine how much money came from which person and distribute back in the precise amounts to each person, I'm sure he would do that. But there's not. So you have to get it back into the community any way you can. And Ron Paul is one that should be doing this, because he's the elected representative of his community. If he doesn't then the President gets ti decides where the money goes, and you know where that will be.

I agree wholeheartedly. If

I agree wholeheartedly. If someone takes your money through taxes, and then says they will give money for a park, back to your city if you want it, but if not they will give it to another city who DOES want it, what would you say? Gimme the pork.

Why not give the money back?

I'll take a check. I don't need a park.

Ron Paul "Sign Wave Across the USA" -- November 5th!

Wrong again, for a perfect record

No, what needs to be done is to stop defending the morally and economically indefensible, and fight to put a STOP to the whole insane redistributionary system!

All you can ever offer is apologies for the status-quo and the powers-that-be, couched in the rhetoric of supporting liberty and small government.

YOU, pro-fed, are the most evil and diabolical troll ever to haunt the Daily Paul. I will attack you every chance I get, because everything you say is anti-freedom and pro-big-government.

When government taxes,

if forces us into the position of fighting each other for a peice of the pie to get our money back by getting it spent on what we want it to spent on. If you're attacking people fighting over the pie, you're attacking the wrong thing. You should attacking government for taxing in the first place. It puts us in this position. Apparently you prefer the President to decide for himself how this money is going to be used, which is support of authoritarianism.

So I'm "the most evil and diabolical troll ever to haunt the Daily Paul." That's quite an honor.

Pro-fed defends theft

No, you put yourself in that position, and worse, believe it to be morally defensible.

All you propose is more status-quo, more status-quo, more status-quo, always defending it and never with any outrage toward it. That is NOT what a true believer in liberty sounds like. And I can just hear you replying that we "have to work within the system", "have to be pragmatic", "have to take baby steps", blah blah blah.

You know what, pro-fed? No revolution or political change was ever effected without first evoking widespread, un-pragmatic, un-accomodating outrage and desire for change. You demonstrate no such emotions here, ever, which mark you as a sycophantic supporter of the establishment in all its manifestations.

I can easily imagine you killing your mother in a lifeboat, because after all, that makes that much more food for you.

LOL.

I just repeated Dr. Paul's reasoning for the earmarks, as he explained in the Russert interview. You think the rationalization is evil. So why are you are supporting Ron Paul if you think he defends theft? Why are you here?

Pro-fed

You STILL cannot bring yourself to any kind of righteous anger over the morally and economically corrupt system, can you?

No, I do not agree with Ron Paul's position on earmarks. But you defend them, as you defend the status-quo here time after time.

How does it feel to be an agent for evil?

One thing I've learned is

One thing I've learned is that anytime someone has to drag the word "evil" into their argumentation, I'm dealing with a delusional person.

I've already made it

clear that I oppose taxes on income.

And I don't know why you're calling me "pro-fed," when I've seen explicitly that I prefer that there be no Fed. My positions are extremely close, if not exact duplicates, of Ron Paul's positions. Like I said before, I'm just too Ron Paul for you.

No, you're just too statist for me

You are a slick troll, I will grant you that, and very deceptive and duplicitous. Like any good propagandist, you skillfully mix your lies with the truth to attempt to deceive those of good faith. I, and others here, can plainly see right through you. Your support for the established status-quo comes through in everything you write, you cunning use of pro-liberty rhetoric to the contrary.

You are a loathsome traitor to liberty, who should be banned from this forum.

LOL!

Don't need it, thanks. But

Don't need it, thanks.

But you will someday, perhaps soon, when your beloved current financial and political house-of-cards collapses, taking your self-identity with it.

Some Background on Don Young's opponent

Sean Parnell, the Alaska Lt. Gov., is Young's major opponent. Parnell is a lackey of big oil and favors corporate welfare. His campaign is being bankrolled (70%+) by a lower-48 PAC who gives Ron Paul a 26% rating.

I don't like Sean Parnell--he is too slimy and squirrelly for my liking, and I have some serious issues with Don Young. But Don Young was willing to co-sponsor Dr. Paul's legislation to abolish the IRS and overturn the 16th amendment, and that is something few other congress-critters were willing to do. He also opposes the radical environmentalist agenda. I think these two things may have had an influence on Ron's endorsement.

Also remember that Ron Paul has spoken favorably of Dennis Kucinich, who is a big government socialist, who just happens to be right on foreign policy. Sometimes you need friends and allies all across the spectrum to get anywhere in this political game. Purists seldom get anywhere.

Do not understand this message of mine as an endorsement of Don Young, however, for it is not.

I hope this helps some

I hope this helps some people awaken more or grow up. We are slowly changing the government. Each step is a step TOWARDS the "perfection" that we seek. Do not be so fast as to judge people for one belief or two. Ron sure doesn't, when he calls Kucinich his friend.

Thanks for the info on Parnell, Alaskaron...

...that and the Liberty Amendment sign-on by Young is enough for me...

This cleared things up for me. Thanks.

Young is also the third most senior Republican in the House and was the chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, not a bad friend to have. If Dr. Paul can use the political muscle we have given him to good ends, and I consider gaining a powerful friend and defeating a corporate welfare man good ends, then I see little problem here.

I found it interesting that Richard Viguerie sent out an e-mail attacking Dr. Paul for this endorsement. He says that Parnell is a "principled conservative". I believe AlaskaRon on Parnell's character, and question Viguerie's motives. I doubt I have to say this but Dr. Paul has been clear on his earmark position for a while now. He recognizes it for the relative non issue that it is.

I'm with you, Alaskaron

I can not stomach voting for either Parnell or Young --- I may just have to write in "None of the Above", as usual. But all the sycophantic ass-kissing of Dong (Not-so-) Young up here makes me sick, and ashamed to call myself an Alaskan.

How about the Ted Stevens ads that proclaim

at the end, "Without Ted, we're toast!"

WTF?

Without a porker Senator, we're TOAST? How far have we fallen!?
