At what point?

Ah. So, InSane cares deeply about Americans, as long as there's enough of them in danger. But if it's a smaller number? Meh.

Boy, do I wanna see him called on the carpet regarding this. I would just love to hear some journalist interview McCain with the following:

---

Senator McCain, you felt it was important to shorten (and even possibly delay, as was mentioned at one point) the Republican National Convention, and direct the Republican delegates to instead spend their time in MN to help in a relief effort. You also said that focusing on the hurricane was more important than proceeding with the convention.

Now that the hurricane has been reclassified as a milder storm, there is word that the convention will go on as planned after all, beginning on Tuesday, September 2nd.

There has indeed been some damage, and even loss of life, reported already as a result of Hurricane Gustav.

So, where's the line, Senator?

At what point is it appropriate to be "sensitive" to the plights of Americans in the affected area; how many people need to be potentially threatened in order for it to be worth your attention, and worth putting a national convention on hold?

Likewise, at what point is it appropriate to disregard the impact of the storm, and go on about your business, and the business of the Republican convention?

Where do you make the distinction? How did you make that distinction in your current decision to continue on with the Republican convention after all?

Objection" must be called out against Acclamation motion

1. Both Roberts Rules of Order and Alice Sturgis Parlamentary Code require objection to be raised. Booing is not enough.

(Sturgis does not have formally a vote by acclamation only a vote by unanimous consent)

2. Before going to nominate by acclamantion, in order to avoid problems with the direct objection to the nomination by acclamation from the floor,
the chair or (somebody else) can call to suspend the rules .
It was done by Hilary Clinton during the democratic vote.

Here also to suspend the rules, the objection needs to be called out, quickly and very loudly, otherwise the chair can use the magic phrase "seeing no objection the rules are suspended".

If the chair recognize the objection to suspend the rules then two-thirds vote is required for the rules to be suspended.
If does not recognize it the loud and clear call for appeal of the chair decision is needed and ... seconded!.

Why it McCain Campaiging in Toledo today?

Interesting -- he really cares about the people on the gulf!

does anyone know how long it takes to do a roll call?

for 4000 delegates?

According to Convention

According to Convention Rules (Rule No. 37 "Roll Call"), there are two types of roll call votes: voice and electronic.

Voice roll call goes by the states in their alphabetic order where each state chairman anounces its state vote results, so there are about 50 actuall roll call votes presented.
Voice roll call is required for nomination for the president and vp unless the motion to suspend the rules is introduced and approved.

In the electronic roll call the state chairmen punch their state vote results into the electronic devices. It is the default roll call procedure.

thanks !!!

I dont remember them doing a roll call yesterday...did you see it?

Looks like

they are planning to do a lot from 3:00 to 5:30 on monday.
This is a excerpt from a Fox News story.......
Davis said the only critical activities of the convention are its constitution through the gaveling in of the opening session, certification of the Republican National Committee delegates and the nomination of both McCain for president and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as vice president. The first two can occur on the Monday afternoon session. The nominations had been scheduled for Wednesday.

In order to hold the convention, a quorum — or 50 percent plus one of the delegates — needs to be present. Davis said the quorum will be called at 3 p.m. ET Monday and the opening session will last a couple hours.

Davis said he encouraged the speakers to attend and deliver their speeches, but he did not want to speculate on whether McCain would attend. He called speculation the Arizona senator might not attend to accept his nomination as “completely immature” and “outside the scope of what I can tell you with any specificity.”

“If conditions allow, we’d love to have him here, and that would be our preference, but again we’re not making any commitments past 5:30 tomorrow afternoon,” Davis said.

St. Paul is starting to smell like Reno.

I JUST REGISTERED

Hi everyone,

I just registered for the convention floor, here at the hotel that my RNC Delegation is staying at. I was asking questions, and he didn't know the answer to most of them, however he looked at my Ron Paul pin, and said that 'Well if you are worried about being there for discussion, or a vote, or something, there is no official time for that. It's actually just more of a dog and pony show, there is no reason to vote.' So, beyond the RNC probably cancelling the convention - which is being talked about left and right here, while everyone sits around Faux News watching the storm - it turns out this is just a show, and actually we don't follow any rules. After John McCain was sitting on the ground, next to Air Force One, celebrating his birthday with George Bush and Friends when Katrina DID happen. What a bad statement, to act like they care now...

just called as well...left a strong message on the whole BS

about having mccain spokesperson speak on behalf of the Republican convention...

on cnn now they are saying that they will be

conducting the official bussiness (which i assume means the voting) about 3-5 pm monday and then suspend the entertainment side of the show till mid week and hold some kind of telethon for the victims of the storm. call me selfish but i wouldnt trust a government held telethon or especially one being held by the RNC

Monday around 3-6pm.

This is our time.

the storm will hurt us

the storm may cause the convention
to be cancled but it would also hurt our convention because the press will cover the storm and not the rally. you can bet your bank account on that. the media may even try to make us look bad for continuing to go with our rally. making us look like selfish, uncaring, unamerican whiners. this sucks big time.of course i'm still going tommorow, but i fear the impact we could have made will be swept under the rug by our wonderful media

mccain is laughing all the

mccain is laughing all the way to disaster ZONE

Schedule of events at RNC

Here is the link to the current schedule of events as of 3:58 p.m. Eastern- listed under the News & Media Portal link, and not under the Schedule link (which is completely blank) at the RNC's website- http://portal.gopconvention2008.com/ . They definitely have gotten the message! We want some answers and I hope they are coming in the CNN update in a few minutes.

On Cnn.com now

Press coference at 4PM ET to announce updated plans. They will be in contact with Homeland Security in regards to the decisions. There is talk of suspending the Convention altogether and turning it into a massive telethon for Red Cross to help with hurricane aid. Hmmm sounds like they have it all figured out.

wtf?????????????????

you have got to be kidding...
who is the insane one behind this???
