What good are regular Berkey filters?

Do they even remove fluoride?
I tried to install those black Berkey filters at one point and they continually bled some sort of chalky material, even after many flushings.
Who knows about Berkey stuff?
I'd rather hear it from customers rather than the company.

Just got mine last night
As a resident of the filthy polluted and corrupt state of New Jersey, I'm a total idiot for waiting this long. The latest "boil water" advisory was the last straw. United Water and Jersey City have had about 20 advisories in the past year or so. I usually drink bottled water when there's been an advisory but I've been showering in this slop. So I ordered a sweet new stainless steel Big Berkley from Ready Made Resources. It's got 4 sterasyl filters and 4 PF-4 filters to remove fluoride . So far so good. For comparison purposes I filled one glass of water from the tap and another from the Berk and, well, I'm an idiot for waiting this long. This thing is going to give me peace of mind too. I'm sure for every advisory they issue, they're 2 more incidents where they should've issued a warning but didn't because it would look bad. Since most of our bodies are made of water, this seems like the best purchase I've ever made. I got shower filters too. The only thing I need now is an inline filter for my ice maker.

Berkey = Best bang for the buck
Never heard of black filters leaking any substance.
PF's? Yes.
I use the PF filters. Important not to screw them all the way down the threaded stem. ONLY 8 TURNS. Any further torque will crush the membrane inside. They are full of particles that must be rinsed out. Follow the instructions to flush them under the faucet. Then, DO IT FOR ABOUT FIVE EXTRA MINUTES in the direction of the "arrow" water flow. This pretty much does the trick. Run about 5 tanks through the unit once correctly set up to final flush. Wash out the lower chamber. Ready to go.
No, the black filters will not remove fluoride without the PF filters. PF's also remove lead and arsenic. They also add a little bit of alumina (inert) to the water, but the black filters remove more aluminum (toxic) from the source water than the PF's introduce. Trade off? You decide....
Basically, call your water department and ask them about the presence of fluoride (parts per million) in the source water and if they add fluoride. If not, don't bother with the PF filters.
Ideally, you could have a pimp system like ecoloblue or the Nature's Spring RO unit, AND have a Berkey for backup if you lose power or running water pressure.
Berkey Pros:
Gravity. You don't need water pressure like an RO unit.
No moving parts like pump filters.
Does not need power like ecoloblue.
Re-usable filters. Just clean 'em with a brush pad.
Portable. Many sizes available.
Affordable. Many sizes including $40 Sport Bottles.
Berkey Cons:
Primary filters cannot remove all heavy metal toxins.

PF-2
The white PF-2 filters are for flouride, arsenic, and other chemical compounds.
The black elements are for larger bacteria, etc. Get both.
There are instructions on priming both sets of filters for first use.
If you are experiencing any odd tastes, you did not follow the primer instructions correctly.
I paid $275 total for a Royal Berkey, with black and white filters, water bottles, cleaning and a free organic toothpaste.

EDIT: theberkeystore.com is gone. Anyone with info please, as they had good deals and service....
Just buy the filters...
and make your own system with normal 5 gallon water jugs. I paid $200 for my Berkey, and all you get is a couple of good filters, which you can buy for under $100, but the rest was just the plastic bottles and spigot--- $100 is kind of a rip-off for those items.

If you don't live next to an industrial plant, then collect rain water. You can put that through a simple filter if you wish.

Love the Black Berkey and haven't had any problems
used one for over a year now, clean as instructed etc. I found this on a sales site that sells both systems.....re: BLACK BERKEY ELEMENT system:
THE WHITE FILTERS (Super Sterasyl) only “filter” water by removing up to 99% of contaminants in some cases— leaving 1% in your water--
o This is why they’re called just “filters”
o 1% is “1-in-100 parts” contamination, i.e., one molecule of contaminant per 100 molecules remaining in your filtered water
THE BLACK BERKEY PURIFICATION ELEMENTS actually ‘’purify” water, with many contaminants removed to “less than detectable limits”--a far superior job than the WHITE Sterasyl filter—the BLACK BERKEY in other words removes so many contaminants from your water that modern equipment cannot detect any contaminants remaining when your BLACK BERKEY is through purifying it—
“Non-detectable limits” are measured as less than “parts per billion”—in other words, less than one part contaminant remaining in your water per one BILLION parts of your Black-Berkey purified water
o This is why the BLACK BERKEY is called a “Purification element”—NOT a “filter”
Already you now know why Black Berkey systems are pricier than WHITE, Now you know why WHITE systems are called “BRITISH BERKEFELD” & BLACK systems are called “BERKEYS”
I also use the Black Berkeys, but fluoride is still a concern
.
I also got those PF-2 filters with them that supposedly filter the fluoride, BUT, those have an aluminum residue which I refuse to trust.
I haven't installed the PF-2s
I think Black Berkeys are wonderful, but does anyone have any advice as to how to further filter the fluoride besides sucking down aluminum dust?

Ecoloblue
We used our tax money to buy the Ecoloblue atmospheric water generator. They have specials if you mention the Alex Jones show. When I bought it I got free shipping and I remember reading on the prison planet forum that they now give you the filters free for the next two years if you mention his show.
Anyway, we are happy with it but it does require a bit of maintenance. Mainly cleaning the air filter and the lower tank. It's nothing major.
If anyone decides to buy it ( for about $1400 ) don't expect anything immediately. The machine takes a few days to begin producing and then it has to be sterilized in a week so you don't get anything drinkable for about two weeks. And of course, the more humidity, the better. The filters and the UV lamp are very affordable and need to be replaced every 3 months and 2 years respectively . I recommend getting one if you can.
Ice Age Water
If you need to buy drinking water, you may want to try Ice Age Glacier water. No fluoride, chlorine, or arsenic and tastes great!
It's imported glacier water from British Columbia. They sell it at Whole Foods and Wild Oats stores but you may need to contact Ice Age for other stores near you. It's pricey, as anything else that is good for you. I pay about $2 for 1.5 liters. Just another option.
Got it, then got rid of it...
Installed it year ago... Measured TDS before and after and quickly realized it does not really reduce inorganic contaminants. I'm afraid that same applies to reducing organic stuff... It does not remove fluoride. I guess it filters out some mechanical matter. But I purchased RO/DI system and it removes (not reduces) stuff. Shows TDS=0 on the output. Water tastes very good.
black berkeys are the best
I would absolutely get the black berkeys. It filters out food coloring for pete's sake!
Why would I pay thousands of dollars for an RO system?
im sorry did you say thousands?
the only people that pay thousands for R.O.'s are those that get sucker by an inhome salesman. you can get a basic RO for $100 from any home supply store, or go online and get a fancy one for $200.
and while we are on the subject, RO 7 distillation produces "demineralized" water, acidic on the pH scale (5.7) and absent of the minerals your body needs. if you use this water you must put minerals back in.

You have to be a zillionaire to protect yourself against the globalists.
By the way, here's the letter I received back from my local water department several months ago regarding fluoride:
(end response)
My question is:
What if the state decides that we need to be "treated" for various other issues besides just "dental health"?
Are they just going to add another drug to the water.....and then another.....and then another, etc?
Where does this dangerous tampering end?
What about our colon health?..............why aren't they concerned about that?................why are they SOOOOOOOOOOO concerned about our teeth?.............................or are they?
Who asked the citizens if they wanted to be forced-drugged with fluoride?
Fluoride doesn't even prevent tooth decay.

the berkley white filter
the berkley white filter will only remove flouride after running it through many times...in the process it adds alumina http://www.berkeywater.com/FAQs/10f_PF2_PF4.html
I have a berkey...
the only way to remove flouride the safe way is reverse osmosis...I also have one hooked it right up to my refrigerator line it also contains a 4th filter that adds the minerals back in...

Berkey filters are the best for the buck ...
Years using the Berkey with the black filters and it does a first rate job. Here in Costa Rica we do not have a problem with floride etc....but rather MIGHT have problems with agro chemicals ( in heavy agro areas ) so the standard black filters work satisfactory. Fortunitly we have pure spring water and it is perfectly good to drink right out of the mountain...but it doesn't hurt to add a Berkey to be absolutly sure.
Never saw any "chalky or milky" run-off either.

That's not quite right, Patrick
I don't have a Berkey system (yet!) but I spoke directly with the Berkey Water representative in the past week or so, because I was similarly confused and wanted to get the 411 for myself.
Neither the black nor the white (ceramic) filters remove the fluoride. You MUST add on either PF-2 or PF-4 filters (which kind depends on your Berkey system) in order to remove the following:
* MTBE (Methyl-tertiary-butyl-ether)
* Fluoride
* Lead
* Arsenic
* DBCP (Dibromo-chloro-propane)
* THMs (trihalomethanes)
* Herbicides & Pesticides
* Heavy Metal ions
Also as an FYI, according to the Berkey rep, there is a 4 to 6 week backorder on their systems, due to recent extreme high demand (hm, sounds like we're not the only ones concerned about the state of affiairs...)
Incidentally, the composition of the Sterasyl™ ceramic contains pure silver. This silver is a material designed to significantly inhibit bacteriological mitosis or grow through. (Colloidal silver users, sound familiar??) :)
If you happen to live in the Golden State or in Iowa, you need to have the system sent to a friend in another state. Iowa makes the company jump through too many hoops, and California...oh, you have to ask the rep to read to you the Official Statement as to why Berkey cannot sell their systems directly to people in California.
Remember: if you want the fluoride out, you purchase either the black filters or the ceramic filters -AND- you also buy either the PF-2 or the PF-4 filters.
I got the PF filters one time....
.
...and cloudy stuff kept coming out even after numerous flushings.
Why?
Did I get a bad set?
Is this normal?
What's the cloudy substance?

I've been using a ZeroWater
I've been using a ZeroWater filter since February. We have well water that is a slight bit high in metal content/taste, but ZeroWater completely takes care of that.
Before using that filter we had Poland Spring water delivered just for drinking water.
The ZeroWater filter comes with an electronic tester that tells how many parts per million of non water particles are in your water....
Poland Spring water was 20PPM. We had a new PUR water filter on the kitchen faucet, that was 33PPM. The faucet water itself was 40PPM. And water filtered by the ZeroWater filter unit was 0PPM (zero PPM).
ZeroWater stayed at zero PPM for months. We've been using the same filter since February and it only now is reading 14PPM, although I think part of that is due to us recently using it on our old Poland Spring water cooler.
Anyhow, they are on Home Depot's website. Very good & worth the money. Approx $135 for the filter container, filters and the counter stand (which is a separate product). We've been saving over $100 monthly as compared to Poland Spring water delivery.
Regarding flouride removal, I highly doubt it does that. But still a good filter, IMO - the best one I've used.
...
Did you say Berkey
Been using a berkey for a year now, works great. But yea, there is allot of information/misinformation out there. I got the stainless royal, plastic berkey not cool for me.
As far filters, black vs the Super Sterasyl, I went with the Super Sterasyl, the Sterasyl will treat three or four times as many gallons of water.
If someone has the filter breakdown, please post.
If you are concerned with fluoride, I am, use the PF2's, it will remove "most", whatever that means. Unfortunately you will get fluoride when you shower if you do not remove it from your shower water too.
Yes, it takes a bit till the crap runs out, I cant remember how many times I passed water through, but it cleans up. This is an active carbon filter, that means that you have to keep the carbon working by passing water through it. I pass at least 3 gallons a day for two people. We rinse veggies, cook and more. I did the math once and I will not have to replace that Sterasyl filter for years at that rate, the pf2's on the other hand will be replaced about every year.
Hope that helps, I like it and don't see a better alternative on the market.
I love my Berkey the water
I love my Berkey the water that comes out of it is phenomenal. I also have the PF-2 add-on which is the fluoride and arsenic remover, the regular black berkey elements don't remove these two things. I followed the instructions when I put it together and never had a problem with them. Also when the filtration slows down after prolonged use you can take the elements out and clean them with a scotch bright type pad and they are good as new again. If you have residue in the bottom you may have a leak at the top. Try putting food coloring in the top section and if it bleeds to the bottom them you have a leak somewhere as the elements will actually clean food coloring out of the water.
I just heard this and it's twisted !!
On the "news" they said that bottled water has an expiration date ? Why would water expire ? what did they put in water to make it expire ? think about that for a minute.

It's the bottles
Chemicals leech out of the plastic of the bottles after long periods of time.
Say, did you know that most bottled water is fluoridated?
get a simple PUR swedish water filter
they clean very well. You will never eliminate all of it but that is the best you will get.

A friend of mine has one.
A friend of mine has one. I've used it a few times.
They do remove fluoride if you get the add on filters. I never saw any problems with black stuff coming through but he had been using his for months before I ever saw it. One problem I saw was that when you fill them after they dry out they run very slowly. It takes about 24 hours of being filled with water for them to run well once they dry out.
If you use them right they seem to be one of, if not the, best water purifier out there. Unfortunately they are expensive and a little temperamental until they get to steady state operation.
