** ROLL CALL VOTE SET FOR WED NITE ** (Breaking GOP Rule?)

0 votes

I had originally posted this as a comment within this thread, but think it deserves its own thread:

According to this NY Times article (9/2/08):

Under the current schedule, the traditional roll call vote to formally nominate Mr. McCain will also be conducted on Wednesday night.

Still, the schedule seems "in flux," so delegates, pay attention and be proactive to make sure you don't miss out on the vote!

And notice, it did say "traditional roll call vote." Let's hope that is, indeed, how it goes.

----

Something just occurred to me: is the Republican National Committee once again breaking its own rules?

I could have sworn I saw somewhere recently a mention that, per their own rules, the GOP is BOUND to have their voting take place on September 2nd, 2008 (that would be today, not tomorrow). If they don't keep to that schedule, then there's some sort of consequences -- the votes either don't count or are considered "out of order" or some such.

Who knows about this rule? Will tomorrow's roll call vote be reduced to more dog-and-pony show, without any real teeth?

I can just see delegates voting, and then after the fact, it's announced: "Oh, sorry; those votes don't count. Our bad. But it's okay; we'll let you know who we picked. It's McCain."

I hope

all our delegates are on their toes! Will they try to sneak McCain in while our delegates are at the rally listening to the good Doctor? As per the presumptive Tue. vote rule?

HA!!

So the New York Times announced voting would take place Wednesday night.

I urged delegates to keep on their toes, and be proactive about the delegate call, in case that Wed. night plan was changed.

Also, you may have noticed I mentioned something about a rule, requiring the vote to take place on September 2nd.

And now, I understand, the delegates are being called to the convention. Suddenly. Today. On September 2nd.

Perhaps I did remember seeing that rule correctly, even if none of us can find a reference to it now!

ALSO: please, please, PLEASE look at this: http://www.dailypaul.com/node/59998#comment-619946

Looks like, per the GOP rules, vote by acclamation is allowed for a VP nominee ONLY -- NOT for a Presidential nominee!

CNN right now

delagates taking seats, ahead: call to order.

Am I barking up the wrong tree?

If I am, I can live with that!! I don't mind one whit! Really, I won't feel insulted! I've already acknowledged that I am not sure about this rule, so it's not like I am defending a "known" fact!

---> But let's find out, please, shall we?

If you know for a fact that there is no "must vote on Sept. 2nd" rule, please tell me. I don't want to keep devoting time to this if we know for certain that it's complete nonsense.

Since this thread is getting such little attention, I suspect either (a) there is no such rule, or (b) we don't know one way or the other, or (c) people are just more distracted by the Rally to notice this thread.

But if this rule does exist -- then we need to know, or the "voting" tomorrow night will be all for naught.

Have any of you even heard such a rule, or came across mention of it in passing, or anything??

Here are the "temporary" rules

Thanks, Habit. This is really important!!!!

Okay, here's what I've found so far:

According to Rule 42 of the 2004 GOP Convention:

Temporary Rules Rules No. 25 through No. 42 shall be the temporary rules of the next national convention and its committees and subcommittees.

So we know that Rules 25 - 42 were designated as the temporary rules for the 2008 convention.

Here are Rules 21 - 30
Here are Rules 31 - 42

I don't see anything there specifically about September 2nd. HOWEVER, those were "temporary" rules -- as I've already said, I'm pretty sure I heard that a ruling was made somewhere along the line designating 9/2/08 as THE date to vote.

So we still need to find the current, updated rules for 2008. HELP!

fan...thee is no stipulation

fan...thee is no stipulation as to when voting *has* to take place...only when the convention must start (which was done correctly)

it appears that any mention of Sept. 2 is a *scheduling* issue...not a *rules* issue . & btw: you won't see the 2008 rules posted on the GOP site until after the convention. it's their pattern.

if there is indeed anything of importance--our delegates have it in their hands. I don't think any of them have time to fax this doc to us (or scan it)

So, in my continued (and, evidently, quite lonely) effort to find out the current 2008 GOP rules, I went to the GOP's RNC FAQ (enough initials for ya?), where they have a list of the Top Ten questions regarding the RNC.

Here is one of the questions the GOP has placed in their TOP TEN list of FAQs regarding the RNC:

"How many balloons will drop at the convention?"

Yes. You can get this question answered, but good luck trying to find the current rules.

Thanks for answering the hard-hitting questions, GOP!!

ok

they sound like our media and our "guvment."

Thanks for the info! We need our delegates to be watchful!!!
