Foxnews eats crow over Ron Paul’s Iowa Debate
Posted in Political Thoughts | Tuesday, November 6th, 2007 | Trackback
This is freaking funny. The Iowa debate rules states that Ron Paul needs at least 5% in a national phone poll in order to be allowed to debate, well low and behold, CNN releases a poll today that noted that Ron Paul has … guess what people.. he made required 5%!!
Enjoy the irony … the rules were designed to exclude him.. and then he hits the magic number… I bet they weren’t counting on that!
Here is a cut and paste of their rules:
Republican Party of Iowa: To host presidential debate in Des Moines
11/6/2007
Contact: Mary Tiffany
(515) 282-8105
Debate to be nationally televised by FOX NEWS CHANNEL
The Republican Party of Iowa announced today that it will hold its presidential debate at Hy-Vee Hall in downtown Des Moines. The event, to be held the evening of December 4, 2007, will be the first debate in Iowa to be televised by FOX News Channel this election season, as well as the first debate sponsored by the Republican Party of Iowa.
Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Ray Hoffmann said, “With the caucuses less than a month away, our December 4 debate will be very telling to Iowans and the nation. We are thrilled to be having this event in central Iowa, and right in downtown Des Moines which will be the epicenter on caucus night.”
The debate will be limited to those candidates who have satisfied the following criteria:
1. Announced a formal campaign for President: and
2. Filed the necessary paperwork with the Federal Election Commission; and
3. Met all U.S. constitutional requirements; and
4. Garnered at least 5% of the national electorate as determined by an average of the most recent national telephone polls of registered voters conducted by non-partisan public opinion polling organizations leading up to the registration deadline as determined by Fox News Channel and the Republican Party of Iowa or garnered an average of at least 5% in the most recent polls of Iowa voters conducted by the American Research Group and the Des Moines Register.

Polls Are the Media's "Sword"
As we all know, these national, landline-based polls are biased, and they are used as instruments to isolate favored candidates from less-favorable ones. Remember earlier this year how the media was pressing (mind the pun) the point that a frontrunner was a candidate who raised huge sums of cash for his campaign? This is how Mitt Romney gained a lot of attention, despite being a Mormon, for instance. It seemed to me that the polls weren't emphasized that much because everyone in the media agreed that it was too early to make any predictions.
Now since Congressman Paul has raised a treasure chest of money and inspired multitudes of supporters, the media now focuses so much on these polls, you would think they were statisticians. They continue to use them to debase Dr. Paul's success, and now it seems that the media will use these polls as a noose to hang Rep. Paul by leaving him out of the next Fox News debate. That's the only way they can try to stop his rEVOLution, but doing that would be similar to using a shield to stop a freight train.
20,000 Ron Paul Supporters Outside of the Iowa Fox Debate:
If they attempt to censor Ron Paul by denying him his rightful place at the debate, I for one will get there from Cali in defiance of Fox's tyrannical behavior. I am sure Ron Paul would be available for a rally on that date in proximity to the debate location.
The big story of that day would not be the debate but the statement being made by the Ron Paul Revolution. WE WILL BE HEARD. Maybe we could reschedule the Ron Paul Boston Tea Party Money Bomb just before that debate (Nov 29th?) ... :-) get out the, "Where is Ron Paul?" banners.
Maybe we could have the massive sign making force with a message to boycott Fox News and we should start a website listing all fox news advertisers with instructions for lovers of Freedom and Liberty and Ron Paul supporters to avoid their products and services...and go one step further and get the word out to everyone that will listen to boycott their products.
I think it would be ridiculous for Ron Paul to be excluded but if he is we must respond with a loud message to the advertisers.
Didn't
the Iowa Republican Party already say he was in? There's another thread to that effect. Did something change?
Oh no! What if they raise
Oh no! What if they raise the required percentage to 6%? lol
Collectivism is slavery.
Stop being so negative
He will win NH in a land slide and Iowa by a good margin. Why? because the other candidates are pathetic and will not motivate their "likely voters" to vote for them. We will show up even if the tempereature falls below 200.
They Will Screw Ron Paul Out of This Debate
The key is that it did say "Average". And it said an "Average" of the polls that FOX News decides. I'm telling you now. They are going to screw him. The Communications Coordinator for Paul's campaign in Iowa said that Paul has NOT received an invitation as of this time to attend. And he confirmed that FOX News was behind the stipulation.
.
I don't know if you meant the following as I read it:
"Enjoy the irony … the rules were designed to exclude him".
The 5% criteria for debates has been used before; to what extent I do not know, not just for Ron Paul.
What I do know is that last year in Ohio's gubernatorial race, they used the same criteria for the 4 debates. This criteria resulted in exclusion of a complete no name, an intelligent Green Party candidate, and the best man for the job - an LP candidate Dr. Bill Peirce.
The Peirce campaign was told that the League Of Women Voters, the debate sponsors, and various news sources (papers & TV) make the policies for the debates.
Off the top of my head I can't remember which sub-section in the FCC rules allow this to happen, but it can "legally". It had something to do with having to provide equal coverage and airtime for all candidates. That's what our campaign looked into to get Dr. Peirce in the debates. The FCC guidelines have a loophole... if you can believe that ;)
The problem with using an Iowa only poll is
This is a nationally televised debate not just Iowa broadcast. Once again the Iowa GOP is trying pretty hard not to get people to join or rejoin the republican party if they choose to exclude Ron. I mean how many people have already changed their registration? If in the instance that Ron is not included, I say that the law of unintended consequences will swing into full effect. Something along the lines of the biggest turnout ever for Ron outside the debates.
Ha!
Foiled again. (We hope...)
December 4th Iowa Debate
All Ron Paul supporters need to get out to the Republican debate on December 4 in Des Moines, Iowa. Money is good, but its not enough. We need to convert the masses through a massive rally. If we arrive in the thousands the whole country will take notice. Lets march into Iowa and show our support!
Good point
I'll see you there!
It says AVERAGE
The USA Today/Gallup poll released on 11/6 has him at 1% http://www.usatoday.com/news/polls/tables/live/2007-11-06-po...
The Gallup poll with him at 5% was from October.
My guess is they will try to keep him out of this debate and a large scale protest will be necessary, UNLESS Ron decides to spend a couple million right now in Iowa and stump the state. He really needs to be in that debate, IMO.
CNN and Gallup/USA Today have him at 5%
CNN and USA Today/Gallup have him at 5%
Somehow.....
For some reason, I think he will be allowed to debate. As another poster pointed out. He has time.... and money... to get the message out.
I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

Margin of Error
Well if the margin of error is +/- 3% he is in anyway. They would have to do a huge poll in the thousands to get a better margin of error. No pollster is going to do such a costly huge poll at this time.
No, they said he had to get
No, they said he had to get 5%+....not 2%+. Even though the polls have a margin of error, that has nothing to do with the criteria. That's how I read the rules.
The rules are very flexible since the "most recent polls" are "as determined by Fox." Unless he starts consistently getting 5-7% in national polls in the next week, I doubt he'll make it. After 9/5, he may very well. We'll just have to keep at it.

"I am a friend of the Free State Project. Check it out, join and continue the effort!" -- Rep. Ron Paul
The rules are wrong
You cannot *just* draw a line like 5% if you are using interval estimates. The problem is that you can end up inviting candidate A that polls higher then candidate B (not invited), while in reality B has more support then A - and the poll is still considered accurate. This is simply bad rule, it makes no sense
It would be great to make
Ron Paul "Likely Voter" T-shirts and show up to the debate!

LOL. Ron Paul's in the debate, come hell or high water.
After he just raised 4.2 mil... in 24hrs.. $3k a SECOND. (CNN)... how can he be denied.....
CNN goofed in our favor
I heard the $3,000 a second comment also but she meant to say $3,000 a minute. But hey $3k a minute is totally amazing anyway.
Think of it this way...
...$3K a minute is $50 a second. And the gummint blows through $1M every 5 seconds or so. That's still better than lawyer rates...
It Dosen't Matter What Dr. Paul Is Polling At ! ! !
Are you kidding me?
What a joke ! ! !
If Ron were polling at 40% FAUX NEWS would deny it and formally declare that according to THEIR polls this "dark horse" is still polling at only about 1%
Never in a million years are they going to allow Ron into the debate.
Do you really believe that they are above lying to protect their own twisted interests???
-
I looked everywhere today, they just announced those rules this week, so the question is, when are they going to make that call, today or next week.
They will regret not inviting Ron Paul and they know it. Just ask Ed. ;-0
Huckster put back his $ meter
it's at a whopping 192k for Nov.
He'll be in the debate....

Why is anyone worried about
Why is anyone worried about this? Its a month away, and Ron has just started advertising in Iowa. Getting 5 percent is not going to be a problem.
