THIRD PARTY PRIMARY - CROSS PLATFORM

0 votes

By voting for ANY third party, we are definitely doing what RP suggests in that we're sending a powerful message to "them". However, we sent a strong message when third party Perot got 19% in the 90's. Yeah, that went well. He got about a month's news and barely a mention since. If he is mentioned, it's under the premise of all his failings (stockdale, his ears or voice, or that he was paranoid about his daughter's wedding). Either way, the two major parties barely took notice and NOTHING HAS CHANGED.

If we rally and actually do something big, whether it's send a message or force a Rep assignment, it won't stop the two party hold in any way. Simply telling a bully to stop won't do anything if he only gains from continuing! There will always be dissenters saying that we screwed it up for their candidate and that'll be a perpetual thorn in our side for drawing further membership.

Without the possibility of an actual win for our candidate, by virtue of splitting our votes across multiple candidates, we can never draw the people in that believe we need to win to make a difference. How are we going to respond to the guy who hates Obama but would put it all on the line to make sure McCain doesn't win? If we ask him to join in a symbolic vote, his response is going to be that he "must at all costs stop McCain and therefore cannot waste his vote". Obviously, that can apply to either candidate so that just doubled the people that we should have supporting us, but will never get. The only two ways to get them is by repeating this 3 or 4 elections an showing them it works, or by giving them hope for a true win.

So.... Here's my proposal. Let's have a "Third Party Primary"! It can be as open, free, internet based, informal or formal as WE CHOOSE. The point is to choose which 3rd party member we can all agree on and gather all non-two-party votes into a unifying vote which actually has a chance to win. All the above selling points still apply but the chances are better for those lesser-of-two-evils voters so the appeal will be much stronger. If we decided in the next week to hold it say on Oct 1st, and pushed the heck out of it, we would have an indication of how much support we have and we can use the month of October to either promote that winner or just let it die back to this plan.

The part I like

..is that it's in keeping with the grass roots movement because there's no requirement for people to actually vote for the primary winner. It just becomes a recommendation put out there for consideration. If we did this soon enough, like around Oct 1st, we could get further support by any polls that responded due to our results. That publicity by itself would generate even further support.

That's how snowballs become too big to stop. :)

So how do we get the word out and get the right people together to make this happen? I have to claim ignorance, I didn't even know C4L had forums. I just signed up and read the news emailed to me plus some on here so I'm headed there now. Does someone else want to post this idea there since I wouldn't have any 'cred' there?

Trying to unify the third

Trying to unify the third party votes is a good thing. http://www.revolutionbroadcasting.com/ has been running a poll recently which includes Baldwin, Nader, Barr, Mckinney, McCain & Obama. Everyone should go there and vote so we can see which candidate has the support.

...

Sounds good in theory, but

I have considerable doubt 3rd party voters would follow through if the candidate least close to their views was the winner.

We must get people to vote their hearts rather than in fear of the more evil one.
The most important thing is to unite people around the 4 points, not one candidate. If they understand the 4 points we will have a real chance to finally sway political events.

Ultimately the legislatures need to see the people want to curtain the executive powers and restore constitutional checks and balances. Who is presidents is less important than making sure he/she cannot usurp power beyond the consitutional limits.

The 4 points will get more overall coverage

due to any coverage the voting/debate/movement gets. We just have to keep the focus pretty close to one of those points all the time.

On the other hand, who cares if the voters actually stick to supporting the winner of the 3rd party primary. As long as they stick to ONE OF the third party candidates, the effect is still to send the message to the Rs and Ds. As I see it, there's no downside to this and just think how many issues could be put in front of voters if we had meaningful debates between all the 3rds!

I think this is a great

very interesting idea?

very interesting idea? Have you tried it out on the C4L blog?

No comment? (bump)

Once again, I put serious thought into finding a solution with lots of potential gain and no downside and I can't get a response even from this group. No wonder this country is in deep chit. Where's all the optimism and passion? C'mon, people. There's no downside to this and only potential from a publicity standpoint and actual winning standpoint.

If we hosted a marathon style 3 day debate online somewhere and got even brief mention, that would also help the '3rd party only' plan, wouldn't it? We could even invite the candidates to a prime time hour on the 3rd day as sort of a highlight of the event.
