Pray for Dr. Paul & Family in Texas - Hurricane Ike

0 votes

Lake Jackson issued mandatory evacuation yesterday. Let's all pray for Dr. Paul, recovering Carol, the Paul family and all of Texas as they seek shelter from the storm. Let's please let Dr. Paul know that millions of his supporters are praying for their safety and property at this time. Ike is going to be a big one.

Thanks to Paul & Wendy.

DIdn't mean to start something...

I sent the above message to Michael about some prayers for Dr. Paul's family and all people in harm's way. It was great of Michael to post it.

But it appears that it caused a fair amount of controversy about whether prayer is worth it. That was not the intent of my message.

Some people actually seemed insulted that the subject of praying for those people was even brought up.

I understand that largely, God helps him who helps himself and that praying alone without any action won't necessarily work. But during the heat of the storm, there isn't much else we CAN do except pray or hope the best for everyone.

If you don't want to pray, then don't. No big deal. But why get so upset at the thought of praying for a better outcome?
Why make it a big issue when the intent of the suggestion was for a positive reason?

I'll bet if you asked Dr. Paul, he would love the idea of millions of people praying for his and his family's safety.

Some suggested that since there is no proof that prayer works, it is pointless.
But if we HAD scientific studies confirming that prayers work, then it wouldn't be a matter of faith anymore, but rather a moral DUTY for everyone to pray as needed.

In the end I believe that prayer is most important when used to ask for divine wisdom in the personal choices I have to make.

After all, it IS matter of faith no matter WHO you pray to. And if you don't believe that prayer is worth anything, then I (as an ardent Ron Paul supporter) certainly support your decision to feel that way.

But from the sound of some of the irrate responses to my suggestion of prayers, it appears they don't support MY decision to feel as I do.

And that is not in the spirit of personal freedom that is the underlying theme of Dr. Paul's campaign.

I fully support people's

I fully support people's right to pray, and if they choose to do so that is their freedom. However, I was simply pointing out the silliness and futility of prayer, and how actual deeds will always make a difference when prayer will not.

The Paul family

is Christian. They believe in praying to God. They aren't apologizing for that.

Accept yes, support no

I accept your decision, certainly would not persecute you for it, but I refuse to support it.

I can't support a world view that would suggest, that the teenage boy that was struck and killed by flying debris was caused because he was not popular enough to have the required number of people praying for him. I am appaled when people pray for the Hurricane to miss them, knowing full well that means it would hit somewhere else. I especially don't like the sort of appeal to magic.

The Amish, for example, never pray for things. When something bad happens they generally accept it as gods will, and that god has everything planned out perfectly, regardless of how it seems to them. By their beliefs, God had a reason for the Hurricane. ( the wind from which blew down a tree in my backyard last night all the way in PA )

The Midwest is having problems...rain + Ike...

pray for us too....

no wind damage but since Wednesday night we have had over 11" of rain - 5" even before Ike stuck his nose in it. everybody in town has flooded basements as they are only pumping water to their neighbors basement. it is still raining. Chicago is getting it some to it seems.

"Widespread flooding is reported across much of the area, with rainfall totals of from four to seven inches in the past 24 hours.

Since rain -- heavy at times -- will continue falling over much of the region through much of this morning, flooding is expected to grow worse in already saturated areas."

Kay's comment on the studies done

on the power of prayer cannot be refuted. They are objective and show that it works, even though the exact mechanism may not be known by some who seek a scientific explanation. Let it be said that prayer is an intention for something to happen or not happen, and that can be very powerful. If you could never intend yourself to get out of bed, you would never get out of bed. If we pray for Dr. Paul and his family, we have a very strong intention as voiced by everyone here, and when his wife, our First Lady, was ill, we sent some very strong wishes, thoughts, intentions & prayers their way, and Dr. Paul said it helped. By the way, Carol got better, left the hospital, and is recuperating, so who are you AaronF to say our prayers did nothing - I guess you are trying to play God yourself.

Am I reading this right..

There was a study done to see if praying works? If so, I'm speechless...

Nope.

Please try again:

These studies are pointless anyway. To determine whether or not prayers actually heal, you would need to know for absolute certainty what would happen to the patient if no one prayed for them at all as a control. And this is impossible because doctors can almost never say with 100% certainty what will happen. Sometimes terminal patients recover, and sometimes perfectly healthy people randomly drop dead. There is no pattern or intelligence behind it. It's all completely random. If prayer works, what about all the people who pray to be healed and still die? The religious get just as sick, and have the same chances of surviving as someone who is not religious.

It's fantastic that Carol survived her ordeal. I'm really happy about that, and I'm very happy for Dr Paul and his family. But we have to be realistic here. She was lucky. What about all the people in the same condition that don't make it? Surely they were being prayed for too. Who does god decide who to help and who not to help? When someone faces a dire health situation and survives, it must have been the prayers! But when someone does not survive, all of the sudden it's god's will, he's too mysterious, yadda yadda. The fact is prayers make no difference one way or the other.

Sorry, but you are wrong

There are no rigorous scientific studies that show prayer helps.

let's ask a scientist...

Benjamin Franklin:
“In the beginning of the contest with Britain, when we were sensible of danger, we had daily prayers in this room for Divine protection. Our prayers, Sir, were heard, and they were graciously answered… do we imagine we no longer need His assistance?” [Constitutional Convention, Thursday June 28, 1787]

“ God governs in the affairs of man. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured in the Sacred Writings that except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it. I firmly believe this. I also believe that, without His concurring aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the builders of Babel” –Constitutional Convention of 1787 | original manuscript of this speech-

I guess, then, that we lost our state's rights in the civil war because the Union prayed better than the Confederacy prayed?

Mandatory government evacuation?

Totalitarianism is alive and well!

Mandatory

means get the F*^k out because if you stay, you are on your own. They do not do search and rescue when the winds top 40 mph.

At least here, they don't physically force you out, and there is no legal consequence for refusing to do so.

Also in a mandatory evacuation, the police may close off roads to prevent people from entering the evacuation area until roads are cleared, water subsides, etc. To get back in, you usually have to have proof you live there. They will not stop people from returning to their homes, but of course, they would rather you wait until it is safe to do so.

(They acted differently in Katrina, and they learned their lesson. Some police in New Orleans tried to keep everyone out the city after Gustav and their chief handed them their a$$)

Thankful to know that Dr.

Family

My family is well and we believe prayers do help. The storm was a big hit on our homes and all are without power. Everyone is safe. I am in FW Texas but have spoken with all of the family. The clean-up will be massive and they expect to be without power for a long time. My Dad is with my Mom and taking good care of her.

Thank you Robert!
