Steve Dore: Pollyanna Creep

From Wikipedia:
Pollyanna Creep is a phrase that originated with John Williams, a California-based economic analyst and statistician. It describes the way the US Government and affiliated agencies have modified the way important economic measures are calculated with the purpose of giving a better impression of economic development. This is a clear reference, in a sarcastic way, to Pollyanna's proverbial optimism. John Williams and other economic annalists, such as Kevin P. Phillips argue the such manipulations distort the perception of electors and economic actors and have ill effects on political and investment decisions.
Thanks Steve!

Hmmm
I prefer his other stuff more; more catchy... and understandable.

Cool Song!
This reminds me of Honky Tonk Train Blues.
I don't get Pollyanna Creep.
How can the economy be doing bad? I go out to town, I see huge, oversized houses being built, I see shopping centers with full parking lots, restaurants that have an hour-and-a-half wait time on the weekend. I don't understand how things are bad? Unless, going into debt to buy all the things that we have is bad? Won't the economy stay fine if we keep on buying and pretending it is fine? Don't we just have to keep the perception that things are fine for them to stay fine? If everyone thinks that times are getting hard, they will quit buying, and then things will really get bad. So maybe the government is doing us a favor by having Pollyanna Creep. It's not like the government and affiliated agencies do it on purpose; it's just the way our system is, right?
BTW, I have a lot to learn about economics, and I loved the music and the passion. I just wish I got it.
z, the sad part is, they DO
z, the sad part is, they DO manipulate us and shape our habits on purpose. We are but sheep and they are experts on the mind. With our entire culture and media, it's almost impossible NOT to be slaves....most people actually enjoy it as sick as it is. It's not difficult to lead us. All we have to do is worship them, and follow their examples and we are exactly what they are and want us to be. We live beyond our means as they do, and commit violence as they do, but as long as it is against those below us, we will never be punished. For example, a CEO of a bankrupt corporation often gets millions in severence pay or whatever, while he's already filthy rich, and the shareholders of his ex-company are going broke. He gets absolutely no punishment. However, go try and steal his wallet, and you'll be behind bars in 2 seconds flat. He is robbing the little guy, but when violence goes down the heirarchy, there is usually no punishment.
Anyway, I'm not sure if I just made any sense at all or was even on topic...I wanted to say very well done on the song! It definitely had me jammin'!
“Liberty means responsibility. That is why most men dread it.” -George Bernard Shaw
Perception begets Acceptance
This perception that the economy is "fine" because we have the ideal credit scores to enable us to spend our way to slavery is just what the government wants. Not only do they get to keep us under the mighty thumb, they get to emulate our behavior and overspend on wars and social pursuits to their heartless delight. We the people will gleefully allow it because we have become accustomed to getting what we want (even if we don't really need it) NOW!
While we may be able to come up with a debt-reduction plan for our households; we, our children and our children's children will be paying the price for the trillions of national debt that our government will never be able to repay.
If it takes going into debt to be able to buy what we need (food, shelter, clothing), then everything is far from 'fine'...
Truth?
When I read your first paragraph, I thought you were going to be making a great point FOR Pollyanna Creep.
In some perfect world, we should trust the universe and everything will be alright. We wouldn't hoard because it stops money from doing its work and then from coming to us. We would treat others like we wanted to be treated. We'd spread kindness and joy and truth. And we would trust in others. Good points.
I guess it boils down to truth. Why not tell us the truth? That's the problem for the most part for me. It is an insult to be lied to or misled for my supposed own good or the good of our country. If that's the system, we need to change it, don't you think?

Right on Steve!!!! We love you...few guys can bring economics and music together. What is funny is that you could sing that song in front of Paulites and we would cheer like you were the biggest of Rockstars! LOL! We are different, but I think as more Americans get it...they would cheer too.
Keep up the good work...DOWN WITH FED!!!!

Warning: it will be frightening to see how badly the government is skewing the stats to make things seem rosy.

your song is about something troubling, but who can tell when your dancing to the groove . . . . hold up, that is kind of pollyanna
