Controversies surrounding Libertarian U.S. presidential nominee and former congressman Bob Barr rose to new levels on Friday afternoon.

There is now a serious effort in the Libertarian Party to remove Barr as its presidential nominee. In order for this to happen, the matter must be voted upon by members of the Libertarian National Committee. A motion has been written calling for Barr's removal and at least one representative has expressed a willingness to make it. If and when the motion is seconded, it will be brought to voting. The motion can be read in its entirety below.

Barr has been rapidly decreasing in voter popularity since his last minute refusal to attend former Republican presidential hopeful Congressman Ron Paul's third party unity conference at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on Wednesday.

Barr instead decided to hold a press conference of his own two hours after Paul's at the same location.

"I'm not interested in third parties getting the most possible votes," Barr told reporters. "I'm interested in Bob Barr as the nominee for the Libertarian Party getting the most possible votes."

Should the members of the Libertarian Party remove Bob Barr as their presidential nominee?

Several of Barr's supporters were furious with his remarks, some even going so far as to retract their endorsements of him. Bloggers quickly picked up on the story and by Thursday evening there was an Internet frenzy, which continued into Friday.

[edit] Removal motion
WHEREAS, Article 12, Section 5 of the Libertarian Party’s bylaws provide for the suspension of the party’s presidential candidate by the Libertarian National Committee; and

WHEREAS, said bylaws provision requires a 3/4 vote of this body; BE IT KNOWN that Bob Barr, the Libertarian Party’s 2008 presidential nominee, is hereby suspended on the basis of the following causes:

- Failure to appear, with little or no notice, at a major media event to which he had been invited and to which he had committed to appear;

- Vicious public attacks by his campaign staff on the character and reputation of the event’s host (1988 Libertarian Party presidential nominee Ron Paul) and sponsor (Campaign For Liberty);

- The disrepute and discredit which the aforementioned misbehaviors have brought upon the Libertarian Party.

The committee advises Barr that he has seven (7) days to appeal this action to the party’s Judicial Committee. Absent a successful appeal, his nomination will be deemed null and void and he will be replaced as the party’s presidential nominee.

None of this matters as long as we all vote 3rd party and promote voting 3rd party. Let's not drag the LP in the trash to our McCain/Obama friends who don't follow all of this like we do. It will just give them pause to vote for McCain or Obama. Only McCain and Obama are our enemies. Vote for ANY 3rd party and give your friends every reason in the world to do the same. That's our goal.

Infiltration

Bob Barr's obvious anti libertarian voting record while in Congress makes me think that the Libertarian party has been infiltrated by neocons and socialists. People try to justify his pathetic unconstitutional voting record by saying he has changed. If he has changed so much, why didn't he continue running for Congress and actually put his money where his mouth is? Why was his voting record completely opposite of what he now claims to support? Why in the fuck didn't the Libertarian party nominate a real Libertarian? I lost huge amounts of respect for the Libertarian party after such a disgusting nominee.

barr isn't a Libertarian so

barr isn't a Libertarian so he should not have even been considered in the first place.

The LP is so fked up it's amazing. Sometimes I wonder if they're backed by the democrats and republicans.

If the Libertarian Party is smart it WILL pull Barr from the

ticket. I gave him every benefit of the doubt for the sake of having a unified protest vote, but I can't support him and his oversized ego anymore. The success at the polls that he was having was 90% Ron Paul supporters.

Man, if they replace Barr

Man, if they replace Barr with Ruwart, I'm voting Libertarian this year, which would be my first year ever voting, which isn't to say I couldn't vote until now. . .

Boy that would make it hard.

Boy that would make it hard. Mary vs. Chuck...wow...that would be hard. Some people say Chuck would be a religous extremist, but anyone who has followed his writings for any amount of time would know that isn't true at ALL.

That would make it very difficult.

False headline.

It's not the Libertarian Party calling for this. It's SOME PEOPLE in the Libertarian calling for it.

It won't go anywhere. It's completely ridiculous.

The press barely even coverered the press conference. It's a non-event.

I know I shouldn't feed the trolls

I saw articles about RP's press conference all over and it was covered by CNN and Fox News, plus aired live on C-SPAN. what drugs are you on, RonBarr?

RP2012!

you're right, you shouldn't

you're right, you shouldn't feed the trolls. If you do, they'll become dependent on you, and they'll never be able to feed themselves, and then, they won't be able to survive in the wild, and they'll perish.

So if we feed the Trolls for

So if we feed the Trolls for a while...they'll become dependent...then we can cut them off and they will starve...mmmmm....I like this plan :D

Barr won't go anywhere,

Barr won't go anywhere, either. He's completely ridiculous and becoming more irrelevant every day.

What do you mean?

What about him is ridiculous?

And what do you mean he's becoming more irrelevant every day? Do you have a scientific poll to source to support that?

Barr is ridiculous for not

Barr is ridiculous for not showing up and thinking that it didn't matter. He's ridiculous with his fraudulent offer for RP to be his VP. Barr knew Ron Paul couldn't do that without compromising his re-election for the House as a Republican. Barr is ridiculous because he thinks this is all about him. It's not. Maybe you don't realize this, but most of us here do.

In regards to Barr becoming more irrelevant every day, it's sort of difficult to miss. Just spend some time reading the discussions here at DP. Barr used to be the top pick around here since RP suspended his candidacy. But now, a lot of people aren't sure what to do. People here are actually talking about supporting Nader over Barr. That's how irrelevant Barr has become. He made an extremely bad decision last week.

Personally, I know how I feel. I very likely would have voted for Barr simply because he was the Libertarian nominee until he betrayed us. That would have been my 1st vote for a Libertarian candidate.

About your need for a "scientific poll" would that be the type of poll the MSM does? Or the sort of polls where RP wasn't included or reported as an option over the past year? Do you know of any Internet "scientific" poll operators?

I do know about one poll, it's at the revolutionbroadcasting.com site. Baldwin is the top pick. Two weeks ago Barr probably would have had a 5 to 1 lead over Baldwin, but now Baldwin is the top pick by a rather large margin.

...

Bump Barr

Bravo to the LNC for jumping into this window of opportunity to begin redeeming The Party of Principle. As an LP member since 1976 I am much relieved by this move. Since I believe Dr Paul is sincere in his dismissal of a Libertarian or Constitution Party nomination, I too hope that a Mary Ruwart or a Russell Means or a Professor Bernardo de la Paz is ready to step forward.

Or Paul / Baldwin

Does anyone agree?

Does anyone agree?

It sounds all fine and good,

but, Dr. Paul seems adamant that he isn't running anymore, and that he's staying in Congress as a Repub.
So, I think those kind of hopes are very very slim, and probably none.

We'd all love it, but remember he's just been through

his wife's severe illness and continued recovery, and now his home has been totally flooded and he has all the recovery of personal effects, probably records, books, we can't imagine the stress load our 73-year old hero has been carrying.
We're thinking we need him, but let's think of what he needs too.

Let Him Slide

Yes indeed, let's let The Good Doctor tend to his chickens right now, it's our stretch of the relay.

Maybe in December the Baldwin Electors from West Virginia and the McKinney Electors from DC will join up with the Paul Electors from Montana and start to put some serious heat on the McCainiacs.

By January he should be "tanned, rested, and ready."

REPLACE BARR with RUWART!

REPLACE BARR!

They should have gone with Mary Ruwart from the beginning, and had Barr and Root not made back room deals she would have won. But instead, Root sold out for VP and the LP sold out for a candidate with access to "media," "money," and a chance to "win." Too bad he didn't have principle!

They should remove Barr and replace him with Ruwart.... I would gladly vote for her.

aVoR, do you know how the LP

aVoR, do you know how the LP determines who their candidates will be?

no idea, why? Ruwart got 2nd

no idea, why?

Ruwart got 2nd place in the voting at the convention.... Barr finally beat her and claimed the nomination, but only in the 6th round of voting.

So it sounds like you do

So it sounds like you do know. Your comments left me wondering. Anyway, what back room deal are you talking about???
