Who is Congressman George Hansen and Why Has My Respect for Ron Paul Just Doubled?
Another thread this morning referred to Ron Paul's 1987 resignation letter from the GOP. Here's an excerpt in which he mentions Rep. George Hansen:
Under Reagan, the IRS has grown bigger, richer, more powerful, and more arrogant. In the words of the founders of our country, our government has "sent hither swarms" of tax gatherers "to harass our people and eat out their substance." His officers jailed the innocent George Hansen, with the President refusing to pardon a great American whose only crime was to defend the Constitution. Reagan's new tax "reform" gives even more power to the IRS. Far from making taxes fairer or simpler, it deceitfully raises more revenue for the government to waste.

I read this and thought to myself, "Who is George Hansen?". Well a quick look on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_V._Hansen) and some other sites (like http://www.constitution.org/ghansen/conghansen.htm) surprised me with information about a congressman that was wrongfully jailed and tortured in 1984 and then found innocent in 1995. I had never heard of this patriot before. Here's a few things he accomplished as congressman:
Hansen's district in Idaho is also where Ron Paul was getting up to 40% of the vote against McCain in the primary. In light of what happened to Hansen, I am that much more in awe of Ron Paul taking on the establishment the way he has all these years.
Seems like there should be a movie made about Congressman George Hansen.

I too have never heard of this man...
But my contempt just bounded ahead by a mile toward the treasonous bastards that have not only destroyed our once free country, but who have almost suceeded in turning its citizens into mind numbed robots. These same souless demons must have been loosed from the very depths of hell and after what they have done to outstanding and brave people like George Hansen among the many others, will have to go back from whence they came! They should all be dragged from their ivory towers of power and led in chains to never-ending solitary confinement!
This story is heartbreakig indeed.....BUT....even though the enemy seemingly is very strong and to many apparently winning, let us strengthen our resolve even more because evil will not win in the end...God will not be mocked!

Chickens coming home to roost
Well, according to the Wikipedia article, Hansen said that the killing of MLK was the "chickens coming home to roost."
Maybe Hansen's arrest, imprisonment, and torture were also chickens coming home?
It could just as easily have been Dr. Paul...
I'm stunned. This story is truly, truly disturbing. George Hansen is the quintessential patriot. It's so hard to digest the fact that these atrocities happened to someone who was doing nothing more than trying to better the lives of every man, woman and child in this country. Had this not have happened to Mr. Hansen, this country would almost certainly be in a better state than the sorry one it's in now. Ron Paul might actually be president, the dollar might actually have some value and this bottomless bailout would be nonexistent. But thanks to a handful of bastards and a modern day Judge Roy Bean, a man who was so close to making a monumental difference in the lives of us all was taken and treated like a terrorist. I think we all know who the real terrorists in this story are. If Charlie Wilson can get a movie, then George Hansen deserves a monument right smack in the middle of the National Mall. At least we have Ron Paul continuing to fight the good fight. Mr. Hansen and Dr. Paul, my hat is off to both of you.
It is better to deserve honors and not have them than to have them and not to deserve them.

Funny... I was just this
Funny... I was just this morning about how there was a movie made about Charlie Wilson and that George Hansen is much more deserving of a movie. I think it would make for a much more compelling movie as well.
Thank you for alerting us
to George Hansen. I had never heard of him either.
the IRS
I also had never heard of this courageous man, which doesn't surprise me. It confirms my opinion that the IRS is the official US mafia. They have no legal right to collect taxes from us, so their only resort is to use mafia methods, violence and threats of violence.
I'm amazed at how wrong my perception of Ronald Reagan has been over the years. What a traitor. Anyone have information on the assasination attempt on him, if that was to keep him in line, doing the bidding of the shadow government?
my grandfather always talked about him....
and Carl Drega.......!
We grew up on farms....so it was normal for my family to have rifles and assault shotguns by the front door. In case of varmints.....the four or two legged kind!!!!!
The only lawmen I was taught to really respect was the Sheriffs office...
But Grandpa always talked about how, if the FEDS would do that to a representative, just think what they do to us regular folks?
I framed the "Get US out of the UN!" bumper sticker he had on his bookshelf.....
sorry to wax sentimental!!!!!!
No need to be sorry.
You warmed my heart with this tidbit of yourself. I have never heard of this congressman until today.. It does reassure one thing tho.. the Federal Gov has got to be dismantled.. It's a monster now..

I live in Idaho
and I've seen George Hansen bumper stickers on old trucks. I was raised here and my dad always told me that George Hansen was the best Congressman we ever had. He said he was black balled by the FedGov. It is cool to see RP had a lot of respect for him. If the news would have mentiond RP in a positive light, RP would have got 60 percent in this area. A lot of people voted for Mcain because our primary is after the big states already put Mcain as the front runner.
The shadow government in action
Pretty incredible that i've never heard of George Hansen. The treatment of him makes gitmo sound like, well... club gitmo.
I truly feel for this man. Nothing but compassion and shame on our country's political leaders for ever letting this happen. It also gives me even more awe of Ron for standing up to others. Ron just always does what's right. His track record is just about unbelievable that a standing member of congress is such a good person, not another sociopath who wishes to use the system for their own power.

WOW
I just finished watching the video. All I can say is... wow. This guy was like a Larry McDonald. Blew the whistle on everyone. And since this is the first I've heard of him, you can bet he was completely ignored.
This video should be spread. Someone write a catchy title and digg it :-)

Also, I remember that there was, um...funny business going on with the Iran hostage crisis, but what was the big-bank scam behind it?
If you want to know more details about George Hansen
and his ordeal, listen to Eustice Mullins talk about George Hansen and Ron Paul at 52:00.

Here's an interesting video
Here's an interesting video clip from 1989 of Eustice Mullins talking about George Hansen and Ron Paul. He starts talking about them around 3:00 into the video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCJdnJz11wA
When Mullins referred to his mentor Pound
it stirred an uneasy memory. So I looked up Mullins in Wikipedia and was sad to see that in the 60s he'd written some scurrilous racist tracts. The quotes from his books are vile.
In this video he seems calm and mellow; I hope that indicates he's grown spiritually since the days he was such a hater of an entire ethnicity
Oh, and he apparently was a Nazi apologist and a member of some Aryan League in the 60s.
I wouldn't make any final judgements based on Wiki
You do know that is basically a public opinion forum of mostly amateurs.
Amazing, Eustace Mullins was right twenty years ago!

Dr. Paul has run and been elected 11 times for the US Congress as a Republican starting in 1974 or 1976.

Update bump... I just updated the OP with a link to a video interview with George Hansen titled, "New World Odor".

Mr. Hansen ranks right up there
with Jim Traficant who was indicted for telling the truth about our government's relationship with Israel. I know that he was setup by the DOJ and also the mass media.
Get the book Taget: Traficant

Thanks for the information, and interestingly enough
the same thing happened to Susan McDougal, you all remember her in the Whitewater deal? Anyway, I was reading some other links from wikepedia about Hansen which led to me the article about her also. And, get this, the US Marshall who had custody over Susan McDougal is now running for Sheriff in Greene County, Missouri. It's amazing the stuff you can find just googling around.
