Rhino: My take on who to blame for the situation we are in.
Regulation hurt, bad regulation made it worse, but that is not it.
Congress's mandate, passed on to Freddie and Fannie, that everyone should have the opportunity to own a home was a big blow, but not the fatal blow.
The poor schmucks that got talked into buying a house they couldn't afford and the whores that talked them into it had a tremendous impact, but this was only an indirect cause.
The greedy banks that leveraged as much as 50:1 to try and increase their margins was idiotic, stupid, and suicidal, but this, too, was only an indirect cause.
It was the private rating companies that failed to do their job. It was the regulations that propped up the validity of these rating companies. And it was their peers that were too afraid to say anything. Just like the Enron debacle, where Arthur Anderson, could have stopped whoring itself and could have spilled the beans, the rating companies were either negligent in their duties or down right on the take. These people should be made penniless for the rest of their lives.
Finally, these financial institutions have the right to be as greedy as they want to be. But at least make it transparent. There should be real time accounting accessible to everyone via the internet. Stop hiding it and let people judge for themselves.

A start-up opportunity:
Create an exchange where real time accounting is done in the public eye. No need for filings and reports. Maybe a simple annual audit would be all that is necessary.

Human delusion is easily achieved
Fundamentally we as a species can easily deceive ourselves. It has happened all throughout recorded history. An entire nation under Hitler became deluded. We are not immune. Only when humans begin to re-connect to reality will we begin to create a new vision and opportunity to trust truth and communicate truth to one another.
That said, delusion, once again will begin to intrude as we let our guard down and become comfortable with our situation and unwilling to challenge all "truth" as a way of being.
I blame APATHY
for our troubles, most of us have not been paying attention. We put our trust in the system and people running it, not very wise and will cost us dearly.

Now normally this wouldn't be a problem, if we lived in a sane culture that understands a house is a durable consumer good that should be priced as low as possible, but suddenly you toss in mortgages, this sick idea of houses as investments, and a bad economy where the only money to be made is speculating in rental properties, suddenly you inflate the price and create a crisis where people must participate in the economy so they have a place to plant their haunches. It's a topsy-turvy world, and once humans started devolving into a dependent bunch incapable of survival in the wild, they are now an object of ridicule and pity. Indeed, how dare a man call himself a man if he cannot even kill himself a meal.
Perhaps if I was so needy of the efforts of others that I had no option but cooperation, I would've elected to stop existing. Thankfully, my only real dependence in this world, as I lack claws and fangs, is a decent sharp knife. Everything else I need for survival and comfort I can fashion from stuff lying around in the woods.
If they want me to participate in their little "civilization", they'd better make it worth my while, and the rest of us would be much better off if we all followed suit.

We are in the situation we're in because of fascism; the backscratching that goes on between our largest corporations and our government officials, and because of "vulgar libertarians" who choose to look the other way, like you, Rhino...
Last year's Citizens United Supreme Court decision, which granted free speech rights to corporations, is making it easy for companies like Koch Industries to tell us how to vote. They can even intimidate their employees into voting for their candidates.
While on the one hand, the Kochs' pet horrors are "the growth of government and state regulations" - on the other hand, they tighten their grip on politics by shaping election campaigns (google Citizens United) or by taking a seat at the legislative drafting table (google ALEC).

I am not launching vulgar attacks; "vulgar libertarian" is a legitiment terminology for a certain type of libertarian, actually not libertarian at all, just a reactionary, authoritarian, right wing, borderline fascist, that likes to hang onto the freedom movement/r3volution, to earn credibility, and poison the well. You could benefit by looking further into the meaning, reedr3v . I am also educating. As I learn about what is happening to our "republic", I am simply passing it on for others' information. Knowledge is power.

I've been thinking about the fact that you accused me of making a "religious slur", simply because I referred to a group of billionaires who are able to define political discourse in America as being Jewish. The truth is, my focus is not on their ethnicicity, it is on the fact that they use their power for selfish motives, while stomping on humanity's face in the process. You found fault in my naming their commonality, rather than the fact that they are able to define political discourse in America.
To call someone "a jew" may insult them because the word jew carries additional meanings (ie to "jew" down a price). The problem may also reside in the fact that being Jewish has been considered shameful by so many for so long. Even those with Jewish blood (such as Rupert Murdoch) sometimes tend to downplay or even hide their "Jewishness", probably because no matter what term you use for it, someone will have already used that term in a derogatory sense.
Also it occurs to me that the Jews do not have any euphemistic terms, like "Hebrew-American". Actually, I applaud them for this, but it means there aren't a lot of politically correct words to use (ie words with no negative historical references).
This situation makes me realize that maybe it's time we tried to be a bit less sensitive about our terminology. However, my calling attention to their common heritage should give us pause as to the reason behind this common denominator.
