WASHINGTON - Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden said Thursday that paying more in taxes is the patriotic thing to do for wealthier Americans. The Republican campaign for president calls the tax increases their Democratic opponents propose "painful" instead of patriotic.
Under the economic plan proposed by Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, people earning more than $250,000 a year would pay more in taxes while those earning less — the vast majority of American taxpayers — would receive a tax cut.
"We want to take money and put it back in the pocket of middle-class people," Biden said in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America."
Noting that wealthier Americans would indeed pay more, Biden said: "It's time to be patriotic ... time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut."
Republican presidential candidate John McCain released a television ad Thursday charging that Obama would increase the size of the federal government amid an economic crisis. Contending that "a big government casts a big shadow on us all," the ad features the image of a shadow slowly covering a sleeping baby as it exaggerates the reach of the Obama tax proposal.
"Obama and his liberal congressional allies want a massive government, billions in spending increases, wasteful pork," the ad says. "And we would pay — painful income taxes, skyrocketing taxes on life savings, electricity and home heating oil. Can your family afford that?"
The McCain campaign said the ad is set to run nationally.

really the congress has responsibility for the budget and the taxes. even though congress gave "the decider" the ability to wage war, the responsibility still lies with the congress.

we have simply replaced taxing with borrowing, and living beyond our means. The kneejerk reaction is to recoil in horror at the idea of more taxes. But do we have the courage or just basic human decency to end the secret spending of dollars by the government? Answer: NO!!!!! Admit it! We are the self righteous, fat, ignorant (is there a word beyond ignorant?...maybe Ill just misspell it, ignorent) center of the world.
Given that, why the hell does eliminating tax breaks, unprecedented tax break giveaways, to the wealthiest citizens cause such outrage if we want to re-establish some sense of responsibility? They run the country, why are they so averse to paying for it? The shoe is gonna have to pinch for any real change to occur. We have pain on the way, friends...spread it to the swells. Or end the war machine and take back the government.

as a california native & current nyc resident, i laugh each time obama calls someone making 250k rich -- it just means you can actually save some money for the future if you're living in a high cost of living city/state. that is, unless you're married & have a family to support as well. then it just means you're probably living paycheck-to-paycheck.

Paying higher taxes is the opposite of a patriotic act because you are complicit with the current immoral system and allow it to continue to function. If you want change for the better you have to move the money back to the people. This government is a cancer at this point sucking the blood out of our Republic.

Oh wait that won't work because they would learn how fun paying taxes is. I know I dont like paying 3400 a month when I work a whole month strait so I am sure those useless eaters wont like paying 340 dollars a month. These idiots believe God came down and cursed the poor instead of a series of stupid decisions leading to the point of poverty, People need to understand life is about making decisions whether good or bad and they all effect You're life. I for one make decent money but only after working 84 hours a week and living away from my family I wish the welfare class would put forth half the effort.

In a truly fair system some people will have to work a little harder than others, some might have misfortune or adverse conditions, but it immoral and unproductive to expect the hard workers to fund the unfortunate unless it is charity. Our system even allows for assistance to get back on your feet. But getting back on your feet does not mean living on welfare for years and years , and now even generations. When you subsidize something you get more of it. Thank the government for the welfare problem and not holding the leeches accountable.
