* 1737 - Charles Carroll of Carrollton, American patriot leader, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and U.S. Senator was born (d. 1832)
* 1777 - American soldiers won the First Battle of Saratoga/Battle of Freeman's Farm/Battle of Bemis Heights during the Revolutionary War.
* 1778 - The Continental Congress passes the first budget of the United States.
* 1796 - President George Washington's farewell address is printed across America as an open letter to the public. In it, America's first chief executive advised, "Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all."
* 1893 - Women's suffrage: In New Zealand, the Electoral Act of 1893 is consented to by the governor giving all women in New Zealand the right to vote.
* 1940 - Witold Pilecki is voluntarily captured and sent to Auschwitz in order to smuggle out information and start a resistance.
* 1983 - Saint Kitts and Nevis gains its independence from Great Britain.

If each one of us can get one other to do the same, and they in turn do the same......effects will be noticed.
I work in an Investment Company in the UK (SWIP) and people do check these sites, alongside the "normal" Bloomberg and Reuters. The company I work for has just (cough) "saved" HBOS (Halifax - Bank of Scotland).....by buying them out for £15.9Bn. There will be major job losses of jobs where I live.
Estimates are 9000 people, but could be much higher. LloydsTSB overlaps HBOS's business, therefore this is NO MERGER.....people will feel the real effect.
I have already started to hear some of the dealers on our floors openly talk about Ron Paul here in Edinburgh!.

Agreed, but ...
I agree with everything said. Left unsaid, though, is Dr Paul's opinion on so-called naked short selling. Supposedly that allows speculators to bid down the price of a stock, like AIG, without putting up their own money. It was illegal; then SEC chairman Chris Cox made it legal, and CNBC's Jim Cramer for one says that led to the downfall of AIG: Once its stock became nearly worthless, AIG had to turn elsewhere to meet obligations.
In the past day or two, I've heard the ban may return in some form. Still, per Cramer, AIG might not be in these straits if the rule against naked short trading had stayed in effect all along.
Dr Paul is anti-regulation, and so am I. But what does he think of regulations against naked short selling, since lifting them seemed to cause so much damage?
Simple answer:
If you're going to buy something, you need to have the cash ON HAND. No margins, no shorts.
End result of that: no repeat of 1929.
