After The Collapse...

I was not going to post this because it is scary and it will scare people, and I truly hope it never, ever comes to this, but perhaps that is what just might be needed. If you think it is overboard, then so be it, but after studying various collapses, including the Great Depression in this country, I thought it might be necessary to understand just what can happen during such
periods.

Forgive me please if it upsets you, I apologize in advance and ask your forgiveness.

Our society floats, indeed it drifts on certain well-placed and deeply ingrained assumptions about our country, its stability and it future. Long ago it forsook the single stabilizing force it had: Constitutional Common-Sense and Order. I hope the following never happens, but the way things look it would do well that we should prepare for such eventualities.

As we are currently seeing, the economy is taking a particularly pernicious turn, but all that we see now is mild, a pre-cursor to a far more difficult stage to follow. As economic dislocations become more and more frequent, defaults multiply as profits are drained by the massive burden of debt that supports the economy. Massive closures and layoffs with unemployment rapidly increasing to unimaginable levels. The economy begins to seize piece by piece until it shuts down in systematic collapse. Hyperinflation eats through the economy like a cankerworm through a ripe harvest. The tattered government will attempt to create various programs to no avail, monetary policies will prove worthless, and job creation schemes will be overwhelmed by exponential increases in joblessness.

It will be vital that if you live in a city that you have a safe escape route planned and at the very beginning of the collapse you make your way out of the most dangerous place to be during that time and that place is urban areas. It is very important that your plans include a safe-haven, a place to take refuge during the first few months of the decay. Ideally, if we could somehow form a network of safe-zones, a network of like-minded people who have not only prepared for such eventualities, but who can support those who are in urban areas during this most dangerous period. I am not sure just how that could be accomplished, but I have a deep gut feeling that it is very necessary.

During the seize phases, there will be an increase of shortages, shortages in fuel will bring about shortages of just about everything else we can imagine, like food, common everyday consumer items, medicine and then will come outages of utilities, transportations systems breaking down, infrastructures falling apart. The people who are so accustom to getting their milk, bread and butter from the grocery store shelves, pumping their gas from the convenience stores will be dumbfounded to find the shelves empty, the pumps dry.

The vast majority of the population will be stupefied; even most of those in our government and the major corporations, yes and even the elite will stumble about in utter confusion and despair. As hyperinflation takes its final toll, the penniless people will look to an equally penniless government to no avail, there will be no help coming from “on-high”. As profits dry up so do the services, including the profitable health-care business in this country. Yes, there will be Martial Law until the government itself succumbs to the plague of monetary collapse, then it is every man, woman and child for himself. Community will be extremely important, a prepared people, like-minded families of friends that can be counted on in such times. It will be almost tribal in the beginning, and then it will evolve into a medieval society in many respects.

For the few people who do own their property outright, their safety, especially in urban areas, will be questionable. Initially, the massive numbers of homelessness wander, raiding what stored goods are available to them, or stealing goods they suspect of being hidden, eventually the homeless hoards will become squatters, taking any property that will offer a degree of shelter and safety. As the massive confused and bewildered hoards will eventually migrate, like beasts looking from greener pastures, they will trample through the countryside looking for subsistence. In the beginning, there will be a massive migration into the cities, when supplies are exhausted there, when the violence, pestilence and starvation take their deadly tolls, the migration will spread outward to suburban areas and then into the countryside. The selfishness of our society will find its expression during these dark times, people who were cold and selfish during the good times will be even much more cruel during the bad times.

So, what will be important? Obviously, friends and family, but beyond that there are certain things that will be immediately necessary and then there will be things that will be necessary over the long-term. Survival and security will be of the utmost importance, especially during the initial stages of the collapse. As the first few months of chaos turns into the first few years of growing despair, there will be some important elements of survival that needs to be understood. It is extremely important that we stock up on Heirloom Seeds now, they will be worth more than all the gold and silver in the world during the first few years after the collapse.

Some important things to know and remember is to avoid strangers at all costs, never get backed into a corner or in a location without knowing a route of safe escape, never travel alone or be outside a safe place at night, always be armed and always have some sort of trade goods on your person. After the collapse, our money will be no good, gold and silver will also be of little use during those first few years, but trade goods used for barter will be of immense value. It is important that we stock up now on various consumer goods such as razor blades, matches and cigarettes as well as lighters will be highly prized, so too will salt and spices, soap, rope, tools, medical and first aid supplies, fishing tackle, etc., but above everything else knowledge will be of the greatest value. It is important that we know trades, such as pottery making, blacksmithing, gardening, preserving foods, woodworking, etc. Those will be valued trades and those who can provide such abilities will be sought out.

As communities coalesce around trade routes, laws will gradually find their way back into society the question will be what type of law, what type of society? The principles we hold so dear must never die out, no matter how horrible the chaos, no matter how difficult the times. It will be very important that there is a remnant who hold the principles of Liberty and Honor upon which this country was once found in the highest regard, that a people serve as a reservoir for such principles.

For an interesting study, please refer to this website, it was written by a former Soviet citizen comparing the USSR with the US.

My concern for the COLD

winter ahead is heat. I have elec. baseboard, propane fireplace and wood pellet stoves (can't use without elec or with door open). If the power goes out, what to do? I have been looking for a battery (car type) operated fan larger than 10" but not industrial size. Could keep warm with fireplace (whoops, no propane either). Could get cheap wood stoves but need fan to circulate and I have a renter downstairs. So, can a car battery be rigged to convert to small household items?? Or is there a product already on the market?

Gangs will rule the big

Gangs will rule the big cities. They already have a group structure and are willing to rob and plunder because they are experienced. As law and societal structure breaks down they will be emboldened.

People preferable need to have a retreat, or if that is not possible a group structure to protect them selves. Still they will be inexperienced and unwilling to take initiative the gangs will be actively pursuing because that is what they do, they will just be doing it more aggressively and openly.

Republicae suggests undertaking a defensive strategy that

takes into account the basic requirements for one's life and the lives of one's family. The precise measurement that remains elusive here is timing. Whether or not one owns one's house "outright" will, IMHO, be ultimately of little consequence if it is situated in a large or even medium-sized city. Given the appetite of the state for money, they will tax (take) what they want in order to maintain their structure as long as possible. How long that will be possible is something that I do not think can be predicted with any genuine degree of accuracy. In general, the strategy being suggested is sound, regardless of the period of time in which we live, but now even more so when one considers the dangers being engaged by our political "leaders". For sure, the dangers being discussed here are very disturbing, but a prudent individual must give proper consideration to the potential scenario(s) being offered in his post. To do otherwise, to dismiss them, to put one's faith entirely in the concept of the goodness of man would be, at best, a crap shoot. Living in any large city during an economic, social and civil collapse exposes one to danger that is best avoided. Consider the offered advice carefully. Though I agree with Republicae, that we can all hope these scenarios turn out to be unrealized, the prudent man recognizes the signs of danger and seeks refuge while the imprudent continue to march directly into the path of destruction until it is too late. Hope? Certainly, always. Blind faith? Not for me. Best of luck.

It is, at this point, an impossibility to stop the systemic destruction of THE DEBT STANDARD which we know as the Fiat Monetary System. It will end, it is ending and either we will be prepared for such an eventuality or we will not...the question is what do we do after it happens, how do we Restore the Republic?

It is happening, the next shoe to drop will the the derivatives market, it has already begun to bust, that bubble is massive and will drain every cent of liquidity from the economy. We have been seeing signals for years that the Fiat Monetary System, the DEBT STANDARD, is reaching its terminal point within its life span, now those signals are rapidly becoming more evident. If you choose to ignore such signals then by all means do so, but you do so at your own peril.

Thanks Citizen Republicae for that post. I will check out the USSR comparison. A few days ago someone posted a bit by a man from Argentina. It got bad there, but not as bad as you fear. Please check it out. I suspect it will be as bad here as in Argentina. Good luck all.

How about a peace plan?

How about peace on earth? Here's my plan, I call it simply "the peace plan" There's plenty of time now to start this, I just need some help.
On New Years Eve we start peace on earth forever.
Send out postcards to every occupation, group, congregation, army regiment, police department etc. around the world. And here's what the postcards say:
1. We Love you
2. Please join us
3. We do not buy or sell anything with any national currency
4. We trade with our neighbors
5. We will continue to do this until peace is restored to the whole earth

I have a website to disseminate more information and I'll try to set it up soon at www.peacepostcards.com. If there are any graphics or web designers who want to help let me know.
I got the idea from this thread: http://www.dailypaul.com/node/62551

i live in right next to

i live in right next to manhattan (new york city) so practically i'm screwed ... i should be preparing a bag with a boxes of matches ... and lighters and etc

unfortunately you have to be 21 to own a rifle here in the city ...

so i have a few knives but idk if that will do any good

a few bottles that can be used as canteens for water

i have to get a knife sharpener

and some wool blankets and etc

Is everything going to become black and white

like during the depression?

I think so many people now

do not know very much of history, and that is why a few here can't fathom what you are saying. But Ron Paul is warning about this very thing, in not so many words. In our homeschool we read of all of history, and this does not sound so very far off, but if one knows little of history, and only sees what they have lived here in America with its (borrowed) prosperity, what you say sounds preposterous. All civilizations have crumbled, many countries have endured what you have said, and it looks like we may go thru it too.

And the same families have been doing it us

peasants all along. Sad isn't it? We've never stoood up to them because of our natural Reciprocity instinct. They feed on our desire to "return the favor". They have managed to enslave humanity for a long long time with shiny metal and, more recently, crisp paper. This whole game is so insane. I wish everyone would quit playing it.

THis Russian fellow has it all wrong

We will definitley be far quicker to respond to a collapse of Washington DC. That is all we are witnessing essentially. We do have a very large free market sector that will pick up the ball. We have 50 different state govts that can provide the basics of society i.e. roads and police etc. We have a tradition of market based personal behaviour of which the russians did not and still do not. We are light years ahead of the old USSR in that we still have incredibel tangible wealth that the private sector will pick up and run with. In fact we have only good things to look forward to if the Fed Govt truly does collapse!!

Vive L'America Libre

The only problem with your scenario

is that you forget that if the dollar and bond markets collapse, all levels of government--not just the federal--collapse as well.

I agree with that, indeed,

I agree with that, indeed, they will try their best to hold on to power...that is the dangerous period.....because they will lash out at the People.

minus threats of martial law and fake terrorist attacks

your scenario sound better than it is now, and your right. One way or another, all we have to look forward to is exactly what we're wanting anyway. Either we will have it through people waking up and standing up, or we will have it through the fed govs implosion. Either way things will be better some day.

those bad times, sound good.

I hate to say it but don't kid yourself there will be lost of pain for a while. This time will be a dangerous time as people try to hag on to power or try and steal power

Plan B and C

You're thinking of Jdayh's plan -- here's the DP thread, with up-to-date numbers.

In fact, I think I'll give that thread a bump right now, just to get it flowing through the sidebar again.

forgot about those

basically if daily paul gets taken offline we're supposed to register our numbers or something so we can stay in contact "somewhat". Call me paranoid but I'll have to do some checking before I just give out anything...yeah..I'm probably paranoid. :O)
