The 65-mpg car Ford won't sell in US (So bail us out please?)
If ever there was a car made for the times, this would seem to be it: a sporty subcompact that seats five, offers a navigation system and gets a whopping 65 miles to the gallon. Oh, yes, and the car is made by Ford Motor (F, news, msgs), known widely for lumbering gas hogs.
Ford's 2009 Fiesta ECOnetic goes on sale in November. But here's the catch: Despite the car's potential to transform Ford's image and help it compete with Toyota Motor (TM, news, msgs) and Honda Motor (HMC, news, msgs) in its home market, the company will sell the little fuel sipper only in Europe.
"We know it's an awesome vehicle," says Ford America President Mark Fields. "But there are business reasons why we can't sell it in the U.S." The main one: The Fiesta ECOnetic runs on diesel.
Talk back: Should we bail out the automakers next?

you mean 64mpg?
I thought of this video when you said a ford that can get 65mpg. The Flobots "No Handlebars"
There's a line where they say "I can design an engine, 64 miles to the gallon of gasoline" and they show a Ford Mustang.

Diesel and Gas are both
Diesel and Gas are both extracted from the same physical crude oil. If everyone used the more efficient diesel, oil companies wouldn't have anyone to sell the remaining gas to. We couldn't have that now.

Diesel is way more
Diesel is way more efficient. 25% more btu's, and also is cheaper to refine. On the power stroke diesel burns approx. 60-70% the stroke gas is only 30-35% it also burns slower, thats why diesels have way more torque but lower RPM's (has to have time to burn)

Here is the 3 pg. review of the Fiesta (both engines;gas and
diesel) that appeared in the UK telegraph recently

If you want the diesel version on US roads, when you see an article tell 'em. Believe me, they read! Fiesta should be here by 2010 model yr
...."from £8,695 to £13,695. On sale in October. £11,845 ECOnetic* model on sale by the end of the year. "
so....should we buy foreign now??
sell us a car made in US that gets that kind of mileage and we won't buy foreign

If it's a diesel, it could
If it's a diesel, it could run on bio-diesel too, right?
theoretically correct
unless there's some specific reason why not...
My son has a diesel truck and there are plenty of stations that have diesel fuel.
Many of the newer engines
Many of the newer engines have injectors that are built to an extremely tight tolerance. I'd make sure it's filtered extremely well. Warranty will also be denied.
The auto industries have contracts with oil companies
Thats the only concern here that Ford is worried about. Its happened before in the late 70's i was driving an escort in Europe years before it became available in the US

Ford: The aticle you have linked to had over 1500
comments last time I looked at it, and was most viewed for days on end. Looks like they closed comments now though. The title seemed designed to elicit a reaction from the public and indeed it did. It may well have been a "test" if you will, to gauge consumer sentiment regarding diesel passenger cars as, the US has long regarded them as dirty, icky and not worth the bother. It is because of that stigma that automakers have not brought newer, cleaner diesel engines to the US market in large numbers. I think they are revisiting that decision now that the consumer obviously wishes to put fuel economy ahead of holding on to outdated notions about vehicle size needed versus mpg savings, as evidenced by the enormous and swift shift to smaller vehicles, that caught the industry off guard. With concerns about peak oil (real or imagined matters not as it has been embraced by world Governments) and therefore high price going forward, that trend toward smaller/fuel efficient will continue. I know Ford was monitoring that article. There were many very intelligent posts on it. Let's hope they bring the econetic engine here in the new Fiesta and they do it quickly. It's a really cute car with some creature comforts.
Business reasons ?
What the hell was that statement supposed to mean? Sounds like the auto industry and big oil is a scam to me, so they can force America to stay subpar and make us pay higher prices. I see big oil saying, no because they won't be able to sell as much gas. Less gas, less profit.

I work at a ford dealer as a
I work at a ford dealer as a tech and have known about this. There is another reason that they won't sell it. In the US the emissions controls on diesels are much stricter than supposedly gree Europe. Over there they figure that if you use less fuel as a consequence there will be less pollutants. This has drove the cost of diesel engines up even higher. More than 50 percent of vehicles over there are diesels. Me, I run mine on used transmission fluid.
California is THE big driver of emissions controls.
While their rules do not *technically* apply to the rest of the country, and are only enforceable on vehicles domiciled and driven in California -- that state alone is such a large percentage of all car manufacturers' markets (we're talking 30% to 50% of new car sales) that they cannot really afford to make different versions for California versus the rest of the country.
So, because of California (and specifically Los Angeles) smog regulations, the rest of us have to get whatever they do. (BTW, this is true of everything else that runs on a petroleum product as well -- gas and diesel engines for lawn mowers, etc also are nearly all in compliance with California regs, even if they are never intended to be sold there -- the chances of a California lawsuit on emissions is just too darn expensive for nearly all manufacturers to even contemplate ignoring them).
Actually there is a
Actually there is a difference. The emission sticker under the hood will tell you if its certified for sale in California. There is actually a few states that have tougher restrictions, they use California's standards. When I do a system scan on a ford the information will come up federal or green state emissions. usually there is not much difference. Sometimes funny things happen though, remember the old chevy monza? Some had factory V8's, but they actually had to use a larger engine in California cause the smaller one just wasnt clean enough.
Not exactly
Diesel vehicles now hitting the market with pollution-fighting technology are as clean as, or even cleaner than, gasoline-powered cars, and they are at least 30% more fuel-efficient. And from my understanding the Japanees have developed a cat converter for diesels that uses silver to lower emissions even more.
If voting could really change things,
it would be illegal. Here is hoping for change!
In 2003 the Epa changed the
In 2003 the Epa changed the requirements. They added cat converters, an EGR system thats way more complicated than gas engines. Also in 2008 they changed again. They now have to use ultra low sulfur fuel. And complicated the EGR system even more. They also have a particulate trap in the exhaust that has to regenerate. It can get up to 2000 degrees. there is a video on youtube that shows a brand new one shooting flames 5 ft out the exhaust. the main reason for the EGR is the NOx emissions. Some of the other companies use a tank of urea (Mercedes Bluetec). I read that Honda has a new catalyst that may change that. All these changes will also apply to off-road equipment in 2011.
How about you guys learn and
How about you guys learn and understand automotive business practice before you criticize this.
First of all, NONE of you would buy this car your all pissed wont be offered here.
Why? It would cost $30,000.
Why would you buy a $30,000 sub-compact that gets 65mpg, when you can buy a $15,000 compact that gets 40mpg.
It would literally take many decades of driving to save any money and that assumes gas over $4/gal too.
Why should they sell it here if it would just bankrupt the company???

And the article then goes on to say
that the reason the US isn't "diesel friendly" is because of the gov't taxes up to $1 per gallon on diesel fuel, aimed at taxing the large trucking industry.
So, it comes back down to the gov't interference again.
Not necessarily the automaker.
HELL NO!!!
don't bail them out...
sounds to me like their "business" decisions need to change a little...
