LNC motion to chastise Ron Paul for not endorsing Barr

0 votes

The Libertarian National Committee (LNC) continues to be in a fierce deadlock today over how to address the growing controversies surrounding their party's U.S. presidential nominee, former congressman Bob Barr.

Many libertarians have spoken out against Barr since his last minute refusal to attend former Republican presidential hopeful Congressman Ron Paul's third party unity conference at the National Press Club in Washington, DC last Wednesday.

One faction of the 17-member LNC, led by at-large representative Dr. Mary Ruwart — who lost the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination to Barr at the National Convention in May by only a few votes — is supporting a resolution to apologize to Paul.

Congressman Ron Paul
Image: United States Congress. This is being countered by another faction led by Treasurer Aaron Starr, who favors a resolution to chastise Paul for not endorsing Bob Barr and “splitting the Freedom Movement.” The motion supported by Starr was made available online Tuesday night. It can be read in its entirety below.

[edit] Starr's Motion
The Libertarian National Committee is disappointed to learn that you have recently urged those in the freedom movement to vote for the likes of Ralph Nader, Cynthia McKinney and Chuck Baldwin, none of whom truly grasp the meaning of Liberty.

More than before, we remain committed to our nominees for President and Vice President, Bob Barr and Wayne Root. We believe both of them boldly present the ideals of limited government, lower taxes, lower spending, and more freedom to the American people.

We invite you to restore your commitment to Liberty by supporting the only candidates on the ballot this year who understand the Constitution and are prepared to restore our republic to what the Founders believed.

It would seem pretty evident by this article that Barr is toast.

Hurricane Bob leaves destruction in his wake.

When conservatives took over the Libertarian Party the promised that their candidate, Bob Barr, would practically walk on water. He's sinking faster than any other candidate in recent LP history. They promised that Barr's selling out of libertarian principles would attract swarms of dissatisfied conservatives to vote LP -- as if the real goal of the LP was merely the increase of votes and NOT the increase of liberty. Apparently none of the promised benefits are materializing.

The Barristas told the LP that their candidate could raise funds. He certainly raised millions when he was showering the money on Big Government Republicans just prior to his nomination. But he is still below $1 million raised for his own campaign. This is hardly path breaking funding. Other, lesser known LP candidates, have done better.

Instead of doing the hard work of a campaign Barr engages in court room stunts. When a church held a forum with Obama and McCain it was Barr who sued them to try to force his way into a church forum -- something no real libertarian would do. No tax funds were involved so it was private and Barr's actions were inherently statist -- no surprise there. Now he is trying to push a law suit to take McCain and Obama off the Texas ballot with the silly idea that he believes, that if successful, he will win the state. He won't succeed.

Stop the NWO....It's just illumi..Naughty !

I wouldnt write him off so quickly...

Hes getting more free press than any libertarian candidate I've ever seen -he was on the Mancow radio show this morning and will be speaking at the Conservative Leadership Conference this weekend.

The Texas lawsuit highlights the hypocracy of the 2 "major" parties when it comes to repecting the rule of law - that story alone has recieved widespread newspaper coverage. If a miracle happens and he wins the case - it wont be just a victory for the LP, but for all 3rd parties.

Dont fight against the LP - fight against McCain, Obama and the supporters of Big Government.

Harry Browne

Harry Browne had more press, raised more money, and was a champion of the libertarian message for the LP.

Bob Barr is no Harry Browne.

And he still got...

Around one percent of the vote. - I completely agree with you on Barr being no Harry Browne - and to be honest I didnt hear a peep from Browne in the MSM then....other than a NPR segment ....

That being said - Is there a 3rd party candidate getting more money and more press this time around? Nader? Is large amounts of cash and MSM coverage reason to support a candidate? Following that logic would take you to McBama.

Libertarians....

Were the first supports of Ron Paul - they knew who he was before the debates, he had been their presidential candidate in 1988 -

It was libertarians who donated to his re-election campaigns for the house every two years - it was libertarians who talked him into running as a republican this time around, and it was libertarians who tried to talk him into running on their parties ticket this time around before their convention.

Seen in this light - I can see why they are upset, they have been there for him over the years, and when he could of really given them something back, they feel he snubbed them by trying to give an equal endorsement along side (while I respect them for what they do agreee on) socialists McKinney and Nader - and Chuck Baldwin (who I have even more respect for), who unfortunately alot of people in the LP see him as someone promoting a theocracy.

Bzzzt. That's an exaggeration (to say the least)

First I was an early (money donating) supporter of RP in the campaign (4th donor from my state), and I am *NOT* a "L"ibetarian (as in party member).

Second, I also remember the 1988 campaign (at which time I *did* become involved with some local LP functions)... and mainly what I remember from that time was a HUGE amount of grumbling and griping that Ron Paul was not *really* a Libertarian, but rather a conservative "Reagan Republican" that had somehow infiltrated the party and stolen the top billing.

So don't generalize so much.

Yes, a *lot* of Libertarian Party people WERE early supporters of Ron Paul's Presidential campaign -- but not all of them, and not ONLY them.

Oh, and even *if* your assertion were true... that would still create zero "debt" on the part of Ron Paul or his other (non LP) supporters. We have no obligation to support any particular candidate or party.

First of all thank you....

For all you have done this past year - We are on the same side here -

- I'm not even a member of the LP, just trying to see things from their perspective - something I do in all areas of my life.

As to your second paragraph - it seems the LP always has internal squabblings over the nominee...then and now...Just four years ago Aaron Russo and Gary Nolan battled it out and they ended up with Badnarik as a compromise candidate.

From what I understand Ron Paul wouldnt have run if there hadnt had so many people asking him too..and if all of those libertarians hadnt been there..would it have been enough? we'll never know - but im thankfull they did. - If you hadnt been involved with the LP in 1988 - would you have known who he was and what he stood for to the extent that you did before the debates? Maybe I did exaggerate - But not nearly as much of an exaggeration as to say the LP has done nothing for Ron Paul.

And your last paragraph - well I'm in complete agreement.

As usual, they miss the

As usual, they miss the entire point of the conference. It has nothing to do with 'endorsements'... they want to 'win' so bad at the cost of much more. I've lost quite a bit of respect for the LP.

While It Technically

Wasnt an endoresment of all the 3rd parties present - It did look that way to the viewing public - They saw Ron Paul telling people to vote for these candidates and thats all they caught of the message - and then theres those who know better but want to use it for their candidate - I've had Nader supporters try to tell me Ron Paul endorsed Nader.

And the LP has no illusions of winning the presidency this time around - winning will be getting over 5% in key states to make things easier as far as ballot access is concerned in 2012 - and spreading the message of freedom.

I hate

Bob Barr Libertarians!

Impeach Barr!

Anyone who trusts Barr must be retarded.

I am a FORMER LP Member

Ask Bob Barr the L. Neil Smith questions:

Do you believe in the UNCONDITIONAL enforcement of the Bill of Rights - including a complete renunciation of the fruitless drug war and elimination of every victim disarmament law currently on the books in violation of every human being's natural right to self-defense?

Ask Aaron Starr the same questions. If they can't answer "yes" immediately and without hesitation, they should just go back to the Republican Liberty Caucus where the really belong.

Motion to rebuke Aaron Starr.

Whereas, the Libertarian Party candidate Bob Barr made a complete ass of himself by reneging on a commitment to appear at a joint press conference with the honorable Dr. Ron Paul and three other presidential candidates, and

Whereas, Bob Barr then attempted to undermine the commendable work of Dr. Paul in order to grab more attention for himself, and

Whereas, this gambit on Barr's part failed utterly, making him look like the self-absorbed ass that we all now know him to be, and

Whereas, Mr. Aaron Starr has seen fit to snivel about the failure of Barr's little publicity stunt,

Now Therefore, Be it Resolved:

We, the supporters of Ron Paul heartily invite Mr. Starr, Mr. Barr, and any other person who was involved in Mr. Barr's PR debacle to go and fuck themselves.

We further urge the Libertarian party to make better choices of candidates in the future, taking particular care to examine the character and integrity of those they choose.

"The problem with trying to child-proof the world, is that it makes people neglect the far more important task of world-proofing the child." -- Hugh Daniel

It seems to me...

If the LNC would have tried to pull supporters towards Doctor Paul in the beginning, perhaps our turnouts would have made a historical difference at the polls. The only reason they didn’t is because they want their own power player in to further hold what power they have, instead of thinking of the bigger picture in supporting liberty and all American citizens. In my opinion they really blew it, Barr blew it, now they can blow it! Had they helped Paul it would have been the greatest advance in their political life, to suggest that we all work together to get Dr. Paul elected might just have opened doors in later campaigns, but they chose not to do this, and then to talk down to Dr. Paul? What in the hell are these people thinking?

In the beginning of a change the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.

Obama, McCain didn't

endorse barr either, or any other presidential contender

Personally, I think

Chuck Baldwin has a really firm grasp of the meaning of liberty, and following the Constitution. And, I think he was the only one who actively and passionately, campaigned for Dr. Paul.
He's got my vote, and I'm happy to see my state has a CP member running for senate as well.

"One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors."
- Plato

Baldwin is

Completely ANTI on a lot of ridiculous social issues, even ones that aren't even the business of the federal government. he is against gays getting married and having a family, against gambling, for illegalizing all drugs, against women in the military, but he is also against the NWO and for a humble foreign policy, it is an ugly juxtaposition of strange platform pieces that is likely to alienate 90% of the population.

He is a political Christian and I tell you a majority of Christians are turned off by political Christianity qua political Christianity. Baldwin and the CP platform is not relevant now, nor will it ever be for any future civilization.

The social concerns are really only moral positions, and not

intended to base federal legislation around, and the CP platform clearly states that.
The distortion often arises regarding they are "against" these things, as if to imply that they will attempt to make federal legislation against them, which is false, according to the CP platform statement.

The CP platform makes a distinction between taking a public stance on morally condoning those issues, and making federal law about them.

The CP stance on all those issues you mention are states' issues(except women in the military) according to the 10th Amendment, and the CP promotes putting those decisions in the hands of the states, just as Ron Paul promotes.
They are not federal issues, and even if they don't morally condone them, their platform is to stay out of it at the federal level.

Baldwin is as close to Ron Paul's positions as it is possible to get, without actually being Ron Paul himself.
Many Libertarians have abandoned the Barr brigade to embrace Baldwin as the real champion of liberty in this election.

In fact, many of the socially liberal Libertarians actually break with traditional Libertarian positions on some of these points, because they advocate for federal legislation to create special-interest policy for these certain issues, which is not a Constitutional position at all, but a use of government force to mandate a public acceptance of a special-interest group, under the veil of "diversity affirmative action". Repugnant..

I've looked at the Baldwin site and there are things there that

disturb me. I'm sorry but that's me.

I know, Lisa. That's cool.

To each their own.

I just am trying to clear up some common distortions that are bandied about.I can totally understand that some of that rhetoric that's on the CP platform can make some people feel uncomfortable.

Everybody makes their own decisions about who to support, and I'm fully behind that concept.
