Campaign Fund Used To Test Stolen Credit Cards

(CBS 11 News) CROWLEY Officials say thieves used a presidential campaign to rip people off.

Christine Horton of Crowley said her account was charged several times to support Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul.

"I had never even heard of him," she said. "I was like, 'Oh my God! Someone is stealing from me."

Monday the Paul campaign made history. They raised more than $4 million online in 24 hours from more than 36,000 contributors.

Frost Bank investigators discovered overseas thieves used Paul's Web site to test stolen cards with $5 contributions.

"The Ron Paul campaign has noticed that dozens, perhaps hundreds of these charges have occurred," said Jesse Benton, a finance coordinator for Congressman Paul's campaign. "We are in the process of refunding that money."

Five hundred credit card numbers were stolen from Frost Bank, but fraud management teams spotted the unauthorized charges and notified customers immediately.

The bank refunded money from nearly 100 customers and canceled all 500 credit cards. Paul's campaign refunded $3,000 in stolen funds.

"He's getting money, stolen money," said Horton. "Whether he's affiliated with it or not, I have no clue. But it's too fishy."

I LIVE in Dallas and first I've heard of this...

I LIVE in Dallas where this story aired and it's the first I've heard of it, and I am an avid (not rabid...lol) RP supporter. If it hasn't caused any ripples in the groups I work with and associate with at work and play, I'm not giving it much thought.

Wanna bet EVERY campaign has probably had this happen? But who do they make a point of in the story? Yeah, Fox has no "agenda"...nooooooooooooo .

Old news! No one is running

Old news! No one is running with it anymore as its absurd. Campaign, already said they will refund any moneys they find that were contributed without the knowledge of the account holder.

Stopping Gossip Dead In It's Tracks

Sorry Freeman, but gossip doesn't just go away. If fact an article on gossip was top of the news on MSNBC a couple of days ago. Most people believe gossip over truth according to a new scientific study. It is in our nature.

Playing nice and not confronting it head on lost John Kerry the election last year. How many of us wondered what was up with him not blasting the Swift Boat people with an angry response? Or John McCain and his bi-racial baby rumor? They can't dig up anything bad on Ron Paul so of course....make it up.

Every psychology book on dealing with gossip says that you go to the source of the rumor and you tell them to stop it immediately. If you don't the rumors will take wings and fly. We know why this story is being hawked.

My question to Frost Bank is "How did 500 cards get taken from your bank then used overseas and why should anyone bank with you when your security is that lax?" That's the story here.

Today I am calling my employee leasing company that uses Frost Bank to cut my employees checks and asking them to change banks or I will find another company. My fiance (who just woke up to read the story) is contacting Frost Bank right now as to why his credit card donation was denied on November 5th, but went through using Paypal.

There are ramifications for letting this story out without a full insvestigation as to who took those 500 cards. Overseas...my foot!!!

Exactly, it's credit card 'security' that won't get blame...

Because of a media agenda that subtly-says "banks can do no wrong." IMO.

It's a part of their war on any form of honest money (which the statists ironically-label "anonymous" despite these kinds of problems with their preferred system) on the 'net.

nonsense..

I even doubt that Lady exists..and if she does she must be very stupid. (yeah the good doctor stole her credit card just after he robbed a liquor store)
Don't push that story.

Under different

Under different circumstances, I would have believed this. But, EVERY TIME Ron accomplishes something big, some stupid story breaks out trying to demean such success, every friggin' time. I don't buy it.

Collectivism is slavery.

My understanding is that this happens to all the campaigns

and that it is a common tactic of Credit card theives. This is just a crappy news report that trys to insinuate that there is a connection between Ron Paul's fund raising, and this activity, when there is none. It is a typical ham handed texas republican mafia smear.

it really is old news, but

it really is old news They test out the stolen cards with a $5 donation to Ron Paul, then they know they can hit it big somewhere else. Common strategy for thieves. But even as old news, I have just seen it headlining again on (big surprise) CBS. They definitely seem to have a pronounced anti-Paul slant.

Something Fishy With Frost Bank

On November 5th, my fiance as registered Republican and business owner went to make a $100.00 donation to Ron Paul's campaign with his Frost Bank debit Card. He has made a couple in the past using this same card. We live in Ron Paul's district here in Texas.

Each time (4) after filling out the website donation form and double checking his entries it came back denied for one of two reasons....lack of funds in his account or invalid card number.

He then called Frost Bank and asked an official what the problem was as he had much more in his account to cover a paltry $100.00 donation. The bank officer told him they had no idea why it wasn't going through. He then told them that he was trying to make a donation to Ron Paul's campaign and if that was the problem. They said, "no".

He then emailed the campaign. They called him back immediately and told him that they saw as well that it wasn't going through and had no idea what was going on. They suggested that he try going through Paypal.

After one hour of hassle it finally went through using Paypal.

Somethings up with these fradualent donations coming through Frost Bank and then stopping legitimate account/card holders from donating on November 5th. If anyone else had trouble making a donation using their TX Frost Bank card they should come forward. It wasn't an anomaly now that I read this story today. I smell a rat as well as fish. Does anyone else? The timing is too strange.

How did thieves rip people off ?

If they donated to the campaign? This story is so bogus! What infuriates me is...Why did they run it as their TOP STORY? An agenda maybe...

"He's getting money, stolen

"He's getting money, stolen money," said Horton. "Whether he's affiliated with it or not, I have no clue. But it's too fishy."

WTF?

Lame-O

THIS is the best that they can come up with to smear the Paul campaign? Seriously, it is about as much of a non-story as anyone can invent, especially in light of the campaign's promise to refund any fraudulant donations.

Foolish

That's like blaming a retail store for someone using stolen credit cards in their shop. You cannot blame Ron Paul for people using stolen credit cards on his site. OBVIOUSLY Ron Paul 100% is against any sort of activity. This is a NON-STORY in terms of saying anything about Ron Paul or his candidacy.

testing the cards

Actually they didn't use the cards to donate large amounts to his site, they used the cards to see if they were still active in amounts of $5.00
so that they could use it to purchase items from another site later

What else did they buy?

If nothing else, you know this is a total set up! In addition, why would someone from overseas choose a bank in Texas? This is the Texas Republican goon squad if its anyone! Thanks GW!

$3,000 is nothing compared

$3,000 is nothing compared to the 4 million plus dollars still donated legitimately.

This won't hurt the RP campaign; it's a hiccup at the very most.

That's not even a story...

So what... stolen credit cards and scams happen to every company and organization. You are talking about a couple of thousand dollars out of 4.2 million.

Whup-tee.

Next...

No offense to you personally, more so for the Local media news reporting.

Pffft

It was a small number of credit cards stolen from Frost Bank. The campaign returned the money.

It was an insignificant amount of money in the scope of the fundraising on 11-5.

RP was probably not the only campaign site to receive funds in this manner.

This Horton fruitcake got her $5 back. She should research the candidate and make a $2300.00 donation to the campaign tomorrow for the damage she did by saying this.

This story is old news. Everyone knows about it.

Christine Horton of Crowley TX. If anyone knows her. Talk to her.

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

Christine???

That probably isn't her name, if there is such a person.
