Dr. Paul got Bernancke to admit publicly where the Federal Reserve got it's authority. Bernancke's reply "from the Federal Reserve Act of 1913" gives credence to what we've been trying to tell everyone. Plus Dr. Paul's question regarding "where in the constitution does it give the Federal Reserve the right to "print money out of thin air" should give rise to questions if the majority of the viewers were paying attention.

Bernanke's snotty response to RP's comment about the Fed's constitutional authority led me to find an article on the Panic of 1907, which in turn led to the Federal Reserve Act.
At the time, the Treasury issued currency, and its amounts were set by Congress. After the Panic, the govt. injected more currency than previously permitted in order to "free up credit." In this limited case, it worked enough to get the banks lending, and majour bankers began lobbying for a permanent cash clearinghouse like this.
Hence, we've had the Fed. But now, they're out of control with their credit-creation, and these gentlemen seem to have no idea when or if "too much is enough."
To help get a handle on the problem, methinks if the treasury issued the good ole Red-Seal note our grandfathers sued to buy and sell with, and restrict the drunken bankers at the Fed with their fake Green-seal notes, we would have less credit but also more accountability.

it is mr. Paul Schooling these idiots that I like him so well....
I think I have this right...just want to make sure.
Bernanke claimed that the $700 billion would not be monetized (or printed) so it should not affect inflation. This means that no money will actually be printed for this transaction, and it's just another fake journal entry made on the Fed's books.
If I have this correct...then our system is scarier than I ever imagined.

Chairman Bernanke was using the rhetorical technique known as a "bald-faced lie".
You might also have noticed as I did, that there was a definite quaver in his voice. I think he was afraid that he'd be struck by lightning as he said it.

I didn't know the Fed printed money anymore. Its been electronic since the 70s, hasn't it? When I tried to educate myself on the Fed a while back, I was astounded by what they do. One economist explained that the Fed "injects" cash into the system from any of its twelve main banks to the tune of billions within minutes of a credit request, and pulls back billions just as fast. (I'm skeptical about them pulling the money back in, but perhaps that's how they USED to do business.) But there's no actual currency being circulated. These cash injections are strictly electronic transactions between banks, and are as much a fantasy as WarCraft or some other computer game.

could have really shaken things up and caused masses of people to sit up and take notice if he had simply used the language of his email sent out today, "Time Is Running Out". Instead of the polite history lesson, if he had hit Bernanke in the face with some rightous anger, with the horror of what is happening to this country due to FED action as contained in his email, he'd have been much more effective. But I just don't think its in his nature to treat anyone harshly - even when its called for. If he'd just included one paragraph, and though there is much in his email to choose from, maybe this, "The issue boils down to this: do we care about freedom? Do we care about responsibility and accountability? Do we care that our government and media have been bought and paid for? Do we care that average Americans are about to be looted in order to subsidize the fattest of cats on Wall Street and in government? Do we care?"

The reason is because by doing that he would be marginalizing himself. When you are speaking publicly you need to speak to the widest audience, including those that are completely ignorant.
I could not admire Dr. Paul more. No better man in any room. But I will say this, we could use a cross between him and a guy like Eliot Spitzer (or just imagine the hard driving type if his entire portfolio of "work" rankles you) to grill these bozos with some hard pointed questions that clearly expose this farce. Perhaps opening with, why did they wait until the week before congress adjourned to declare a "crisis"? People have no clue how they are being manipulated and they should.
but I have to say that when he cites "Austrian economics" he loses about 95% of the viewing general audience, at least. Maybe it can be argued that the audience for this was more on the geeky side and yes, I go to the Mises Institute site and like Murray Rothbard and listen to Tom Woods on history. He is earnest as hell but...I just think as a rhetorical choice in public speaking it sounds too obscure and foreign (eeegad), and makes him appear fringy to the masses. Do they have another name for their school of economic thought?
Just an observation, probably immaterial considering he is not running for the presidency.
Yes, I have to agree - the term "Austrian Economics" starts to make my eyes glaze over too; I have raised that issue before here, several months ago. Some catchy term is surely in order.
BTW to put a little perspective on the bail-out figures which would probably end up at more like a trillion dollars - TEN Bill Gates' and
THIRTY - FIVE Oprah's combined, STILL do not make a trillion dollars.
Obviously there is insufficient time for Dr. Paul to do much of anything other than drop a name and ask a pointed question in that forum. I am sure he mentions Austrian economics in the hopes that people will look it up and study it. There can't be any doubt that he has been effective so far in spurring a resurgence in interest in Austrian economics. But I fear, as you do, that it is lost on most of the public and that using the word "Austrian" is puzzling to most. I'm not sure there is a better way to go. Garrison calls that portion of Austrian theory dealing with the business cycle and monetray policy "Capital-based Macro-economics". That avoids using the somewhat confusing term "Austrian", but doesn't cover the whole field of Austrian economics.
Dr. Paul is my hero. I think he is brilliant, true, compassionate, and lion-hearted. But he is not much of a speaker. Partially because he has SO much to convey within the confines of channels designed to convey only sound bites and empty posturing. And partially because his brain goes too fast for his mouth.
I think we should just be grateful for him as he is. We can't change him anyway! Hahahaha!
