9mm vs .40 cal

0 votes

After reading the article on surviving the Argentina crisis, I've decided to purchase a handgun. I already own a 12-ga. shotgun, but think I may need something when traveling. I spoke with a former police officer but wanted to get some other gun owners thoughs on getting a 9mm vs a .40cal. I currently am siding with the 9mm because it's about $200 cheaper and I have been told it is easier to fire with one hand, it holds more rounds, and the ammo is also cheaper. He also said that the .40cal is more powerful and needs to be handled with two hands, but I am worried that it might be too powerful for my wife to feel comfortable using.

Also don't forget to get a bike! If the dollar crashes I expect gas will be unafforable for some time.

THE gun you have in your hand is the best one..
weee

Colt 45 acp government model 70 series firing mechanism

without a doubt better than a .40 and a 9mm

the 1911 semi-auto design is proven in combat ,and it fits the hand like a glove.the bullet was designed to splay cavalry horses and to stop a charging bayonet wielding soldier in the trenches of ww1

Don't forget......

whatever gun or rifle you buy you must keep it clean.
Especially if it is gas operated!!!!
Practice with it, learn it, dissasemble it, I'm not saying become one with a gun, but learning and knowing your weapon is key to making it last.
It's also a good idea to learn what to do if it jams or if you have a problem with a magazine feed.
For example, when I was in the Marines and we were in Iraq, Your weapon would jam if you had a full magazine, because of the spring in the magazines!!!!! We were astonished on how this was a common problem so we had our magazines maxed minus 5 rounds.
So test your weapon and become a good shooter!!!!

I went with the 40

I used to train with some very high speed guys out of TFTT here in LA, at the time most of us were either shooting 1911's, .45 or GLOCK 17's, 9mm. When the FBI decided to go with the .40 and all that I had been hearing about it's balance between stopping power, availability and capacity, I switched to .40 and picked up the sub compact G27 and the full size G22, for magazine interchangeability and G27's concealability and stopping power.

Once my instructor asked me what the best gun in the world was, being Recon Instructor and a 1911 advocate, I started into "well you would say..." then he pulled his gun out and said "the one in your hand."

I think everyone should read the post of the guy's real life first hand experience in a recently economically fallen nation and the Urban Survival PDF it was based on. It will tell you of the importance of the "gun in your hand" scenario:
http://docs.google.com/fileview?id=F.43777692-7cd3-4cb0-b56c...

The reason I first chose a 9mm was the general international munitions availability and high capacity magazines, now .40 has become much more common and I wouldn't hesitate to keep that round as my first choice.

I watched my Assistant

Gunner shoot a freedom fighter in the neck with a 9mm...Response was something akin to "did you just shoot me?"

I'll never carry anything smaller than .45

February 20, 2012 - Veterans For Ron Paul March on D.C.!

I had an employee get shot in the head

with a 9mm. He had really thick dreadlocks and only suffered a mild concussion. He turned his life around after that experience though. I don't like any weapon that might just piss somebody off.

Sorry, but

I just have to say that when I first saw the headline on your comment, I read it as "I had an employee shot in the head"

And I thought to myself, "Wow, that employee must have been really bad!"

I would also consider

a hunting rifle..

distance shooting may become necessary....you know...to put food on your table and such

A good 9mm

with hollow point rounds should provide nearly the equivalent knock down with greater accuracy.

LOL!

Yeah, the round has more to do with it but hollow points or "rhino" bullets are outlawed in some states so finding them would be rare and you might get some states who have loose ammunition laws.

sam, i does not happen..
I have watched guys in pistol competions using a 9mm fire shot after shot trying to knock down a steel target that would not go down.. next guy up with a .40 or .45 would one shot the target and it would go down! the delta force guys told me its shot placement.. but those delta force guys would shoot as many as 5,000 rounds in a day! they have that luxery.. we don't!

9mm or 40 cal hmmmm

40 obviously has more knockdown power and is more accurate than a 45. The 9mm would be even more accurate in rapid fire as it has less recoil.

Thanks...It's much more accurate than I am.

My friends and neighbors have similar models with shorter barrels. We plan to do our own reloading.
Hope I never have to use it for anything other than hunting or punching holes in paper, but I am at peace with what ever happens.

Your top performing

self-defense ammo for that gun is the Hornady A-Max 155 grain load.
It's the best at this time(things change rapidly), and will perform stunningly in terminal performance as far out as you'll be able to hit anything with. There would be some better choices at 1000 yds, but for under 800yds, the 155 A-Max is the ticket.

The wound channel that is produced by that bullet is unbelievable.

Are you kidding me, I've had a blast with it and so has my

dad. It fires great. The kicks not too bad at all, I was a bit timid at first, not sure why though, I'm not afraid of a 12 gage (I'm tall but small boned). My first clip was horrid but once I relaxed and found my center it was awesome. It's funny but I literally crave taking it out :)

Have you tried one or are you speaking from perception? It really is impressive.

of Federal HST 9mm here.

.40s and .45s might expand 1 or 2 millimeters more, but IMO the low cost and easy shooting of 9mm is the way to go.

Federal HST

I was planning on getting the Federal Hydra-shok until I seen the HST's expansion. Could anyone explain to me how I know which weight/grain to purchase? And if anyone is wondering I decided to purchase a Smith&Wesson Sigma 9mm.

124gr. or 147gr.

Personally I would load it with Speer Gold Dot HP 9mm Luger 147gr.

Congrats on your decision.

2 things

The lighter weight bullet will travel faster on the way to the targer, shooting flatter, which is not really an issue with a pistol.
The faster speed to target will assist some hollowpoints in opening fully when they hit the target.
When the lighter bullet hits the target, it will penetrate less because it has less momentum in the fluid media of the target.

The heavier weight bullet will travel slower on the way to the target, and have less velocity to open the hollowpoint up.
When the heavier bullet hits the target, it will penetrate deeper due to more momentum of the heavier bullet.
Many heavy bullet loads use a special design hollowpoint which is designed to open up more easily at lower speeds.

So, it comes down to speed vs penetration.
I always prefer the heavier bullets personally.

The S&W Sigma is not a very good gun.
It will work, but it has a reputation for jamming, and the only real good point about it is low cost.
If you like S&W, the Model M&P in 9mm is a very good gun. While it looks quite similar to a Sigma, it is a much improved newer design and many people prefer it over a Glock. Costs more than the Sigma, and is worth it.

To my way of thinking, personally I consider the CZ-75B to be the best affordable 9mm handgun. Excellent proven design. Glock is very good, but there are some things about Glock that I don't like, and one major thing is that if you "limp-wrist" a Glock while shooting(which alot of newbies do) it will not cycle properly, and it will jam. Glocks significantly rely on a firm hand-hold to be reliable.. For an experienced shooter, a Glock is a very reilable pistol, but much less so for newbies.

I second that statement about the M&P.

I have a few firarms. . .

but this question came up for me recently as well. I had purchased a Taurus PT-140 (.40 S&W) and went off to the range with my girl. She is 5'2" 105 lbs. She had no problem shooting it. Accuracy was good. I watched her shoot all 50 rounds in the box and carefully observed her. What I found was... First the gun Physically moved her shoulder back then she would step back with her right foot. She then would step forward again re-acquire target and fire. She had groupings of 6in. at 15 yards.

What bothered me was the readjusting between shots. The PT-140 being a short barrel .40 has a bit of a kick. She acted all tough and I agreed she did well but I did not like how long it took between shots and the readjusting. It ate at me all trough the next week.

So that next weekend I purchased a Taurus PT-111 (9mm). Again I whisked my girl off to the range. I changed the grips on both pistols(made a huge difference for both of us) and had her fire the .40 first. She did much better but the problem was still there. Control was better and speed improved a bit but still it moved her.

Then I handed her the 9mm. OMG ... night and day. At 20 yards she had 2.25in groups. Rapid fire at 15 yards she blew the center of the target out ... twice. She said she felt much more "in control" and "comfortable" with the 9. The movement problem totally gone. I feel a lot more comfortable myself knowing she is comfortable with it and is proficient in its use.

For the record I have a short barrel 12ga for the house, a Springfield M1A Socom .308 for the serious business and a couple larger semi-auto pistols. These 2 Tauruses were bought for carry pieces. They are fantastic. I love them. If you are debating due to price which caliber I look at it this way. You can pick one and buy a Sig/Glock/Kimber.. whatever and it'll be quite expensive OR you could buy both calibers. The MillPro Taurus pistols can be found online for $250-$400. At $400 if you bought 2 it would be comparable to 1 $800 dollar Glock. Reliability.... I have 900 rounds through the .40 and 650 through the 9mm and have not had a single problem. Break in had some small issues with disassembly for cleaning , but these 2 are my fav's without question. Maintenance is straightforward and simple. I know this when I squeeze it goes BANG... every time.

Find what you comfortable with and if you cant go to the range get some SnapCaps to get used to the feeling of pulling the trigger. They helped my girl tremendously with her aim.
