I am a peace-loving man, but I am also a student of history. Speaking on a purely hypothetical basis, there are numerous examples, both historic and modern, of ill-equipped guerrilla insurgencies that have won against far superior forces. The key to such successes is always maintaining supportive relationships with the non-combatives with the population of a country. As usual, when an internal conflict begins, a certain percentage of government forces will naturally side with the people of a country, transferring both superior weapons and training to the insurgents. Additionally, it is natural that there will also be a substantial transfer of weapons through commandeering weapon supply chains, manufacturers and through strategic strikes.

In such hypothetical insurgencies it is of primary importance that there are few, if any real connections between insurgents. Small guerrilla bands, perhaps two and at the most three, are extremely effective in sudden and unexpected strikes against the enemy. These units can harry enemy forces, disrupting supplies, and communications and fight a very subversive and protracted war with a great deal of success. It is also vital that there be invisible, independent guerilla fighters who, from all appearances, look as though they remain loyal to the oppressing government while maintaining a relatively normal life, working as everyone else, being a good citizen and neighbor; all the while they lead a very different life by slipping in and out of society into degrees of guerrilla actions. It is also necessary to have such guerrilla agents within various official positions, whether that be on a local level or at a higher level; these can serve as informants, if possible, to the actions being taken by enemy forces, they can also assist in gumming up the bureaucratic system as much as possible and safe without endangering their positions.

The targets however, must always be enemy forces and their collaborators only, never the general population. There is a great deal of difference between guerrilla warfare and what we know as terrorism, terrorists make no distinction between combatants and non-combatants, perhaps this is why terrorists rarely succeed in transferring the support of the population to themselves, they only tend to alienate them. The general population, after all, is the perfect pool for recruits to the cause of the guerilla warrior.

Once again, hypothetically, it would be necessary to target the enemy’s vital infrastructure, most of which would be very, very vulnerable Microwave, communications, radio towers, power supplies, water supplies, food supplies, rail, air, storage facilities of every kind. So, judging from history, even recent history, I do not hold any doubts that such an insurgency could be successful against superior odds.
