Did anyone else notice the DOW lost 110 points after 4:00 close

Were they milking it? I've seen it move before 5 or 10 points but never 110 points

Trying to scare people

Been trying to call and email my Congressman Ike Skeleton (D,M0 4th, Yes vote) lines stay busy, website tells me too much traffic. I fear its not just us opposing the bailout, I think maybe the corporate lobbyist are pushing to pass.
Does anybody find it strange we haven't heard from Paulson or the Fed Chairman?

Exactly where it was at 4:05

What a surprise. so now the new headline that replaces the "worst crash ever" news cycle is "dow up on hopes for revived bailout".
They are playing us.

Yep

Just Recording Last Trades

There was probably a big sell off just before the closing bell. The trades are still done person to person, it's a little archaic, and they're paid based on the volume of trading that they do, so they cram to the last minute, and then go and actually record the deals. It takes a few minutes and I'm sure volume was really high.

Yeah, to push it to a new record to make BIG headlines

Futures

The stocks stop trading at 4:02 but the market doesn't close until 4:15 (futures will close at 4:15 then reopen at 4:30pm). The reported close is the 4:02 price. You may see a "Fair Value" number on CNBC, that is the 4:02 close but nothing will be settled or closed until the official futures close at 4:15. Moves of decent size between the 4:02 and 4:15 closes are very common especially on highly volatile days like yesterday. It is caused by traders and brokers trying to "flatten" their risk before the overnight session begins.

I would love to see the DOW finish up 500 points today

Why ..

The story being spread now is that the dow is up because of HOPE for a new bailout plan.

If the market is up why the bailout?

that's after hours trading.

no big deal

At 4:02 it was 668 and at 4:05 CNBC said they finishing up

trading. At 4:10 the close was 777 and a new all time point drop. I have heard "777 the largest point drop in history" over and over and over on repeated on TV the last 12 hours repeated over and over again trying to scare the shit out of everyone and force congress's hand.

I've seen it move 500 in either direction never saw it move more

10 points

It was not after hours

It was not after hours trading. There was a huge crowd at GE and another DOW listed company that had to settle their trades.

yes. i also noticed google

yes. i also noticed google finance closed off all commentary on the dow and nasdaq as a whole.

i have no idea what happened there.

I suspect

I suspect the PPT painting the tape, to make the failure of the bill look scary.

Exactly My thoughts ..

And what a surprise. It opens exactly where it was at 4:00, but all the newspapers got to run a headline about the "worst crash ever"...
Happy Jewish Holiday (whatever it is) .. tommorow the government is back open for "business" ...

it's relative

On a normal 80 -100 point change day, it usually settles within 5 to 15 points, after the close.

Today was a 777 point change day.

High Volume - slow computers?

I suspect there was just a delay in the tally.

My favorite stock was up at the end of the day. Yay! (CPST)

It's called "after-hours

It's called "after-hours trading".

From Wikipedia:
"Trading outside these regular hours is not a new phenomenon, but it has generally been limited to high net-worth investors and institutional investors, such as mutual funds. The emergence of private trading systems, known as Electronic Communications Networks, or ECNs, has allowed individual investors to participate in after-hours trading."

Nope

After hours trading begins five minutes after the major markets close, and it is not reported in the daily figures. The number you see on the New York Times and whatnot is from the NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ. It has nothing to do with extended hours trading.

Cramer just mentioned 777 worst point loss in history..lol

668 would not have been a record

I'd pay a dollar to see

I'd pay a dollar to see Cramer jump off the Chrysler building.
