"Economic woes combined with cutbacks in the newspaper business will reduce the level of print coverage given the NHL in some U.S. markets.
In Florida, The Palm Beach Post decided last week to discontinue staff coverage of the Florida Panthers.
The Post's veteran beat writer, Brian Biggane, was assigned to the Miami Dolphins. None of the Panthers' home or away games will be staffed by the Post.
The Los Angeles Times has chosen to use just one beat reporter to cover both the Kings and the Anaheim Ducks, with Helene Elliott continuing to write hockey columns.
The Times will not staff road games for either the Kings or the Ducks on a regular basis. Sports editor Randy Harvey said in an email message that reporters will "travel selectively, probably not early in the season."

In the old days
sports were far more "pure" because you'd have guys that worked a regular day job--at a factory or a mill or whatever and played in the evenings -- it was all about love of the game, not money. And, the irony of all this is there are plenty of people out there today, FAR better than the guys on professional teams that either didn't get a chance or didn't want to just be an athlete--preferring to go into medicine or law or engineering or some other intellectual pursuits that were more useful / fulfilling.
Case in point: American Soccer -- if you look at people in high school, there are a lot of kids who are great players; they use that to get a scholarship to Yale and get a job on Wall Street making hundreds of millions without breaking a sweat. That's why the entire MLS sucks as well as the US World Cup Team.

But the internet, sports, church and politic Can all be and opiate if aloud to grow into an extreme. Now for us Spiritual People out here I didn't say the worship of GOD, Just church. Don't jump down my throat. However church, sports, politic, finance (economy) and yes even the internet are all opiates used to control the people. We are all to dependent on these things in our lives, marking us all interdependent, instead of being independent. Run Paul want to LIMIT one of the opiates, called POLITICS, that control us , BUT WHAT ARE YOU ALL GOING TO DO ABOUT THE OTHER ONES THAT CONTROL YOU!!!

Screw what "Sports" has become.The reporters can report real news for a change.For those of you that like sports so much get your friends together as get a pick up game going on weekends and have a BBQ afterwards. Teach your children sports but play with them. Going to a pro sporting event seems like lots of fun but spending $200.00 plus on some stupid jacket (and putting it on you credit card that is near maxed out) is just the behavior of a nation of brainwashed cretins.Yeah I hate pro sports lost too many friends long ago to them.

I recognize the childish waste of pocket and mind on professional sports in this society. But I do appreciate sports and their competition. How much in life eventually turns into pre-packaged spectacle...but at times sports, on the field, is refreshingly real with valid human achievement on exciting display. But as time goes on, the rot of making a buck off it is admittedly degrading it beyond recognition.

the economic downturn could have some good social consequences.
Maybe local governments will cut down on wasteful spending and police forces.
Maybe we will stop importing crap from China and start producing again. Maybe people will invest in sustainable energy.
Maybe people will stop driving so much and use public transportation, or even bike and walk and get a little excersize.
Maybe those people who made a fortune trading paper will get real jobs and learn some humility.
Maybe the best and the brightest will become doctors, engineers, and scientists instead of bankers and corporate executives.
Maybe people will start planting their own gardens.
Maybe big pharmaceutical companies will cut their advertising budgets and their pill pushers, and go back to making quality products.
Maybe the whole culture of "me first" and don't think about consequences will start to change.
Probably not, but we can hope.
