Iowa Debate - Get to work!
Submitted by Khomar on Fri, 11/09/2007 - 09:01We have been complaining about the Iowa GOP and Fox News keeping us out of the debate. However, we have the largest group of volunteers in this campaign. Let us do what they have suggested. Let's go door-to-door.
We should take a petition, slim jims, and DVDs to as many people as we can in Iowa. People can sign the petition if they want Ron Paul to be in the debate. At the same time we can tally how many of those actually want to vote for Ron Paul. If we can show up with 20,000+ signatures (especially votes), it will be a lot harder for them to turn down Ron Paul. And if they do, we can always take the news to CNN or ABC News. I am sure that they would love to report anti-Fox News news.
They say that we are just computer nerds typing at our keyboards. Let's prove them wrong. Step away from your computers and start canvassing the streets. Even if we can't get Ron Paul in the debate, we can pick up a lot of support through this effort.

Idea, go to the debate, even if RP isn't there.
I am sure some large rallies and events would happen in Iowa if Paul as not part of the debate. I suggest RP supporters start finding ways to get tickets now so you can go the event, disguised as another supporter. And pick a part of the debate to start a "Ron Paul, Ron Paul, Ron Paul..." Chant during the show. Force the Fox people to address what is going on. I am sure they will call it rude and crazy. I think it's called a Revolution!
Sure, but...
I don't want to discourage this activity, because I think it serves a very good purpose. However, if the only time they see a Ron Paul supporter is protesting at a debate, will the average voter actually get a correct understanding of the message.
We need to get out and actually talk to people in a non-confrontational way about the issues. Let them know that Ron Paul's campaign has a face, a message, and real hope for America. The only real way to do this is door-to-door campaigning.
Agree, I was jumping to the last step in the process
Agree, I'm looking at this as the last straw option if he is not part of the debate. Your comment is granted and that is what would we should be doing now. I was only pointing out the last step :)
Missing the point
I think you guys have missed the point of what I was really trying to say. We need to start a door-to-door campaign. I only mentioned the petition as a way to prove the bias on the debate. The real key is that the Iowa GOP is right: we need to get out there and start campaigning directly to the voters. Check out the thread "Back to Basics....NOW!" for more discussion on this.
No... GOP is not right
As pointed out below, in all other metrics, cash raised, straw polls, grassroots efforts, attendances at rallies, etc. Ron Paul leads the field. The polling methodology had been narrowly engineered to exclude a large base of Paul supporters; often his name does not appear or is not mentioned.
So, its a ploy by the GOP and FOX to make the poll numbers the determining factor, which is why I say, to hell with the GOP and FOX. After all, in the debates, they give Dr, Paul very little time and then they pack the hall with people who, on cue, boo him when he stands up for the truth. It is time to stick a finger in their eye.
Find a competing channel and seek an extensive interview at a time that will coincide with the debate to draw viewers away from the FOX channel. That will hurt FOX's advertising revenues. Advertisers aren't as stupid as the folk who work behind the microphones and in front of the cameras. They know that any candidate who can attract $4.3 million in one day has a huge following with plenty of dough in their wallets. If these supporters are not going to watch the debate, they will not advertise; or they would negotiate a discounted advertising rate. On the other hand, CNN could attract serious advertising dollars if they put Ron Paul on for an extended interview.
It is time for the campaign to challenge the credibility of the poll numbers and to ignore FOX. Don't advertise on their channel. Don't give them interviews. They aren't worth a dime. FOX is the scourge of the TV industry.
In the end, we need to brace ourselves for this, the top brass in the GOP, the incumbent Bush brigade, will use every trick in the book (and they have more cards up their sleeves than we would ever know) to rig the election and nomination process. It would be nothing short of a miracle if Dr. Paul gets the nomination, even if he wins the primaries in a landslide. Don't underestimate the level of deceit and corruption in the higher echelons of the party. The party elite is infested with the likes of Pat Robertson. What we are seeing in Iowa is just a glimpse of what's to come.

I don't agree with everything the GOP says, but...
When they say we should be campaigning door-to-door, I cannot argue with them. I think the way they are relying on the polls for this debate is absolutely wrong as the polls have shown to be very inaccurate in the past. However, we should not discount their advice for effective campaign techniques. We can combine the old tactics with our new ideas and innovation and make a truly powerful campaign effort. With Ron Paul's dynamic message, we can create a force that they will not be able to defeat.

I think the Larry King idea is a great idea, but I would like to suggest another complementary idea. I know we really want the money bomb to go off on December 15 and 16, but how about moving the money bomb to coincide with the debate. There would be nothing more embarassing than a 7 to 8 million dollar bomb going off on the same day that Fox hosted a presidential debate without Ron Paul. I know we like the original money bomb date, but I'm just throwing an idea out there.
watta bout
MSNBC ,don't they have an ongoing battle going on with Fox ?
Has anyone contacted
TV Stations in Ames and Des Moines? Called a local radio talk show?

Join the phone bank
Fox news and the Iowa GOP have set a mark that candidates must register 5% in well know polls by 11-30-07 to be included in the debate on 12-4-07. The campaign has set up a phone bank to call Iowa for Ron Paul. http://www.ronpaul2008.com/states/i...

So Dr. Paul isn't in the
So Dr. Paul isn't in the debate? I thought he was. What's going on? What needs to happen for him to be in the debate?
Do the math
You could get Dr. Paul to 20% in the latest poll and he still would fall under 5% as an average.
I'm not saying don't knock on doors, I'm just saying that no matter what you do, Faux is not inviting Dr. Paul.
I feel we need to show up there.
They didn't get the message that 40,000 of our brothers and sisters sent on the 5th.
Maybe, we should deliver it in person.

but
their criteria is an either or. 5% of the national poll averages or 5% or better in the Des Moines Register poll. Specific work in IA could easily get him above the 5% in the register poll, assuming its not conducted like the AP/Ipsos...
That's not the point
First, if we are able to pull this off and actually get a lot of signatures on the petition, they may deny access, but they will get a lot of bad press as a result.
Second and most importantly, this gets us out of our chairs and campaigning for a man we believe in. Our non-traditional campaign tactics have been very effective, but the traditional techniques are used for a reason too: they work. Think about it. We can approach people directly, talk about their problems, and point out Ron Paul's solutions. Let's do the math here: if 50,000 meetup members tried to talk to 10 house per week, that would be 500,000 people If we got even 1% of them to join our meetup groups and do their own canvassing, we would have 5,000 people the next week reaching 550,000 new people. Can we do this? Sure we can. We can do the traditional door-to-door campaign better than any other campaign could imagine because we have thousands upon thousands of willing volunteers who are intelligent and well informed about their candidate (I hear this all of the time).
I agree that we need to show up there, but we can also be showing up at the doorsteps of voters houses ready to explain the ideas and policies of Ron Paul.
Time to Denounce the Polls... and FOX
I agree that Ron Paul supporters should be relentless in their campaigning and the last thing we need is a Mary Tiffany to tell us how to go about it.
However, the polls are flawed. There should be a correlation between polls results and money raised. There should be a correlation between poll results and grassroots support. When this correlation is missing, the credibility of the poll data goes out the window.
Clearly, the GOP and FOX don't want Paul in the debate, which suggests an alternative approach. I alluded to this yesterday. When one suppliers lets you down, you pick up the Yellow Pages and you look for an alternative.
CCN and FOX are fierce competitors. The Paul campaign should contact CNN and tell them that they have an opportunity to upstage FOX, by offering Paul a Larry King interview that coincides with the debate. Paul will choose CNN. FOX and the GOP will have a black eye, especially if the ratings show that far more people watched the CNN interview than the FOX debate - a no-brainer.
Let's face it, a half hour with Larry King is far more productive than 6 minutes of speaking time in a FOX debate.
How would this headline grab you?:
"Ron Paul Declines Invitation to Participate in FOX Debate...
... says, FOX audiences are too small. He has bigger fish to fry.
Ron Paul had $5 million in the bank at the end of Q3. Thanks to a terrific grassroots efforts that raised over $4 million in one day, the Congressman from Texas already added $8 million to his war chest this quarter. He'll be spending a good portion of this on TV ads, but not on the FOX channel. He thinks that would be a serious waste of money. "The FOX channel is too biased and hence attract relatively small audiences. Instead, I'll be spending my money where I'll get most bang for my bucks, " said Paul.
FOX did not respond, but rumors have it that top management is considering replacing Hannity and O'Reilly with more competent and intellectually honest individuals."

great idea!
If it comes to that, I think your idea should be widely promoted.
If RP can't get the Larry King thing
then maybe run some TV ads in Iowa?

from USA today
News of the party's decision and how to protest it was spread quickly over the Internet by supporters of the anti-war, anti-tax, anti-abortion libertarian. "We are getting bombarded" with calls and e-mails from Paul's supporters, said GOP spokeswoman Mary Tiffany. She said there were 25 voice mails from angry Paul supporters before the start of business Thursday.
"I'm all about the First Amendment, but at the same time, how is this productive?" she asked. "They need to start calling voters and start door-knocking instead of calling the Republican Party of Iowa."
