My Johnny Appleseed Initiative

0 votes

Let me begin with a small story.. Their is a story that very few people tell anymore where I grew up.. It had to do with my Grandfathers General Store.

If anyone knew Paul Howard they would always refer to hims as the man who would cut up a apple for you. If ever stopping by the store I would never be let down to visit my grandfather, always quick to cut an apple up and pass a little salt if you beckoned.

His back yard was filled with Apple trees, from Red Delicious, to Granny Smith, to Golden Delicious. Mind you he always bought apples from the adjacent town orchard to sell in his store for he had 11 kids to feed and needed those back yard fruit trees.

I'm glad I've not forgot those memories.. here's why.

I see my home town now and everywhere you look their is nicely cut blank void grass lawns typical of cookie cutter design do it yourself home gardening commercials that it makes me nauseous upon reflection of how things once were.

The thought came to my mind today when I stepped out of bed..

If I offered to plant a fruit tree in everyone's yard in my home town their would be creation of not only a possible fruit market in a few years but a real viable use for all those wasted front lawns.

Couldn't help but think, Gosh my very own Johnny Appleseed initiative.....LOL. I'll be talking to city council tonight when I get home.

Just wanted to share a possibility for everyone out there who reads this and cant stand the wasted lawn space problem in America.

Not to mention learning about B-17 in apple seeds is a possible cure for cancer if not a preventative measure.

That's a wholesome idea.

That's a wholesome idea. Consider craigslist to spread the word of your mission as well.

I love the old towns here in north Texas. It was tradition and practical to plant American Sycamore trees along city streets. They grow fast, live long, and provide shade in the hot summers. The trees were also used to mark property boundaries up until surveying became the norm.

The Sycamore is interesting in that it is 'self pruning'. i.e. during drought or disease the tree will actually starve some limbs until they fall off.

The Arbor Day Foundation just mailed me their 2009

Tree Planting Drive offer. I can get 10 beautiful flowering trees for $10. I checked online @arborday.org and found their fruit trees selling for $7-8 each. This is a good organization and may reduce your overhead till you begin sprouting fruit seeds at home.

Great economy deal!

That' s pretty cheap for beautifying and cleaning our environment.

Oruval---This group coordinates this kind of stuff all the time

great resource. They may have resources you can tap into, finanacial, press lists, helpers, etc.

You could REALLY be onto something neat here. You gotta call them "Liberty Trees"

Thanks..I appreciate it.

I don't mind telling what's going on I just cant stand when Rhino does that..
He makes it like I have to answer to him. It's very annoying and overbearing in an authoritative way..

Other than bring the idea forth to my city counsel I really have only been testing the waters with people.. I'm at the point of just putting up signs or going door to door to be honest.

I worked for the local paper at one point.

I was thinking that.. I'm however not looking to turn a profit I just would like to see everyone have a fruit tree in their yards. It's a good thought thing..

Press releases for community service stuff are the easiest

The whole Johnny Appleseed thing has appeal. You write the whole thing like a reporter would, quote yourself, quote a neighbor (you can actually think of it and then call someone to ask if they approve of your quote), quote the public works director, and tell people how they can become part of this exciting project.
I coordinated a thing one time with 100 kids cleaning up the city with brooms donated from home depot called "Sweeping the Avenue" and it was a fantastic success from primarily daily press releases. If you need any help let me know.

Awesome..

I appreciate it.. =]

In Sept / Oct 25% of my diet I picked up...

From Apple trees around town. They are all over town and they sit and rot. I probably picked up 100 pounds of them. I feed the cores to the deer. So they poop the seeds and spread more and more trees.

I never understood why people destroy all the trees and plant stupid grass, and when they do plant trees they plant trees that don't give any fruit. IT is stupid..

Good idea, man!

I'm trying to containerize as much fruit as possible in the yard. I was just thinking about trying to plant some fruit trees in the county park. Not sure if could get away with it or not...it is small, and right near my house. I'm hoping that the vegetable gardening myself and a few on my street do will spread as well.

One last thought is to make sure that you mix the right blend of fruit trees to encourage pollination, early, middle, late season varieities etc.

Awesome.

Cool!

I remember as a youngster in the 80's people would pass out free tree starters and various different types of plants. Our elementary school even had an all grades garden! And that's the last I heard of that! Remember the plant the tree initiatives a decade or more ago??? What happened to that??? Well, nevermind I asked. But....that is a cool idea, to pass out starter plants or trees to people in your community :D. I'll have to ponder that one and bring it up at this meetup i'm going to soon!

While normally

While normally Oruval, I think we disagree all over the place, this is an excellent idea.

I'd prefer if nothing came from taxes or from any agriculture department as others have suggested, but you can't win them all.

Glad to see you working by the sweat of your brow for the betterment of your community. It's a fine example to everyone.

Oruval this is a beautiful thread;

Your positive energy is really inspiring.
One consideration: depending on where some of us live, little trees need nurturing as well as planting. Enough watering if there isn't much rainfall.
It would help a lot to get the new owners involved -- including the kids so they'll help look after the seedlings.
I lived for 5 years in D.C. The city planted thousands of small trees one spring. But autumn after a hot dry summer, they were almost all dead. Along roads in and unoccupied areas, no one took care of them.
As always, people need to do things themselves to do them right.

Bump because I wondered if you ever did it?

I actually brought it before my city coucil.

They haven't voted on it yet. But it's about the right time to plant trees for the spring.

Have to have more than one tree planted for some of the heirloom varieties to produce fruit? You know, male-female!

Bees fly.

Do they not? Yeah that's the whole thing about everyone's front yard having a tree. Not all the same but their will be more than one of the same kind.

Real Patriots for 9/11 truth -- http://patriotsquestion911.com/

Yeah I've Seen Bees Fly, It's Not A Conspiracy

But, certain fruit trees and possibly some other plants have to have both male and female to pollinate. My gardenin' skills might be a bit outdated but I would at least investigate that you have to have both male 'n female.

Hey! This is a peace lighthearted thought.

I love trees in neighborhoods, really.

Thanks =]

I know. Having a Yoda moment I was...lol.
