CONSIDER BELHAVEN NORTH CAROLINA AS YOUR SAFE AREA TO RIDE OUT THE STORM

0 votes

About eight months ago I moved my family of six from metro Atlanta, my home for 18 years. I was going broke from the drought, me and my wife knew we were going to loose everything if we didn't sell off what few remaining assets we had and sell our home (which we had equity in) and start over from scratch . We settled our debts with the IRS and our creditors, leaving us with very little. After the realization we would have to start over again we decided why not change the back drop.
I did extensive online search's looking for a place that fit all my requirements.....including living near the water. after I nailed down the general area (Innner banks/Outer banks/eastern coastal North Carolina) I researched the area for three weeks living in my truck to save money. After driving thousands of miles down damn near every back road and off the beaten path to every little podunck town , I found Belhaven. If there ever was a place for Ron Paul Americans to move to as a safe haven from what's to come, this is it. Belhaven is an isolated little farming/crabbing/fishing community located on the Pungo river just west of the Pamlico sound and Ocracoke Island. It's political structure is in flux right now. Belhaven is surrounded by millions af acres of rich farm land, the worlds best fishing and crabbing, and hundreds of thousands of acres of wild game hunting areas. This town has before and could easily again have it's own self sustaining economy regardless of what's happening in the outside world. In fact the Englehard bank was the ONLY bank in the United States not to close during the onset of the great depression.
Belhaven features many attributes for a poor, small, isolated community. What I've mentioned above as well as the list that follows:

small hospital
one pharmacy
one lawyer- and she has the constitution hanging on her wall
very, very cheap and ample supply of homes and property both off and on the water.
grocery store
one bar
A very good hardware store
several locally owned restaurants
no military reservations nearby
two police officers
more than 35 miles to the nearest Mcdonalds
Is represented in congress by Walter B Jones, one of 6 house republicans to endorse Ron Paul.
breathtaking beauty and charm
BlackBeard the pirate used this area as his hide out
It's already a barter community (in fact I purchased my small home from a man in town through a direct mortgage from him..no banks )
World travel accesible to sail boats
water front estates as well as extremely affordable homes all within a few blocks odf each other

There are many more specific reasons I'll list later but let me just say since moving to this remote, rural outpost my kids are closer and happier than I've ever seen them...and I still haven't hooked up the Cable tv, I have to walk almost a block through a beautiful Mayberry-esque village that's trapped in time, to go fishing.

My family and friends all thought we were crazy...and to be honest me and my wife had our second thoughts at first but with what's happened lately I'm really feeling smart and ready for whatever is about to happen in the coming months and years, the upside is, if nothing happens or we only have mild to severe recession I'll still own property in a water front community.

How would I descibe Belhaven... it's like that charming, small, southern, waterfront town, trapped in time, like you see in the movies and if you're at the hardware store at the wrong time you'll get volunteered to film the next town council meeting. true story.

Nice read. Any town that

Nice read. Any town that still has a little family-owned hardware store is truly special. Hope you haven't convinced too many people to move there or that may change. Ron Paul supporters are definitely the salt-of-the-earth and special. good luck to you. I was engaged in a south carolina lighthouse called "old baldy". I love the carolina coast.

Just one problem...

Blackwater Security is just up the road a bit in Myock, NC. I'm a NC resident also.

Moyock is over a hundred miles away...

.. near Richmond and DC. I doubt they'd be interested in a town that has no strategic advantage and a population that is smaller than their corporate structure, not to mention that there are no billion dollar contracts here.

I just have a question that

I just have a question that really should be irrelevant, but here goes... I'm hispanic and so's my husband... we are both professionals... he's a high school math teacher and I'm a nurse... I noticed that they only have a little over 2% hispanic population... do you know if there's any racism issues? I did notice there's a high rate of blacks... just asking since it is the south...

NONE BUT PAUL!

The South gets a bad rap

We have learned to get along here, there are less race problems down here in the south than you are led to believe. When I was going to elementary school (in the south), all of us kids got along just fine up until about 5th or 6th grade when we started having speakers come to the school to talk to us about the dangers of racism, then we began to notice that we looked different and problems started to happen along racial lines. Not much mind you since at that time this was the same group of under 100 kids that had been together since 1st grade, but since the government had basically started instructing us on how and why we should not like each other the started to be some friction. Up until then we didn't know any better and we got along.

In spite of all the programs put in place by the department of education, and all the other government programs that just feed the division of the races, we in the south get along just fine.

Here locally most all of the small churches have blacks, whites, asians, hispanics, in attendance together, (most large ones are not though). We all work together and live together just fine, in the rural areas, in the cities there are more race problems, I think that is because that is where the most government intervention into peoples lives is.

So please don't be afraid of the south because you are hispanic, and please don't think that we are still acting like Bull Conner & George Wallace, if you aren't a crook, a deadbeat, or otherwise and non-producing member of society then you will be accepted in the south just fine, we have learned to get along. But, if you try to use the resources of the rest of us instead of fending for yourself, then no matter your ethnic makeup that is when you would feel some discrimination against you not because of race, but because we in the south for the most part are happy to help out when you need it, but not when you won't do for yourself.

Thank you Dr. Paul for making my act on what I already knew was right.

Belhaven is amazingly diverse for it's size. there's actually a very large hispanic population (for a town of 2000) I think most are probably illegal farm workers though. We all seem to get along fine

I loved reading this, rustybuick,

these are some things for people to start thinking about. Thanks for posting to the Daily Paul.

hardy har....

The state of jerfferson may not exist....but the mountains and beauty of Oregon and Northern California remain......Klamath Falls is might pretty....

yes

but the pay scale is miserable and so is the work. But it's a cheap place to live. most folks either commute to Little Washington or Greenville or become entrepreneurs. This place is ripe for the picking for someone to locate a business here, cheap commercial properties, a town council eager to accomodate.

Hey Airborne!

Sounds like you and your family just made a great decision. Thanks for the tip, will place in the back of my mind.

World travel accessible by sailboat and used by Black Beard, I'm sold.

My wife works at the hardware store

and I'm working at an egg farm across the county line in Hyde County but we'll be opening Belhavens' first internet cafe in down town Belhaven ( a half a block from our home) at the end of October/ early November. I hope and pray it succeeds.

Broadband?

When I looked at the Google maps I liked the location reminds me of home (Florida) but how's broadband service there?
