Excuse me, but wasn’t it St. Paul who condemned the idea of working for “the greater good”/compromising or sinning in order to achieve the greater good?
It goes parallel with the idea of voting for the lesser of two evils. No matter what you’re still voting for evil. That’s exactly what this election, like always, is turning into.
I’m actually appalled that my church/bishop is urging me to vote at all. They sent out a mass note telling us to vote and to choose life. Well, abortion is certainly an important issue, but the issue of life goes beyond that. What about war? People die and life is spit on in this unjust war in Iraq/Afghanistan. How are we supposed to in good conscience vote against abortion by rejecting Barack Obama, but embrace illegal war by voting for John McCain? This is only one example, and really, both candidates would continue these wars (and likely start new ones).
I happen to feel there is NO significant difference between these two candidates and the only decent and Catholic thing to do would be to either abstain from voting or choose a 3rd party candidate.
I don’t think the Church should be picking and choosing on the issues. What about the sin of over-taxation and fiat money/money changing/inflation? Jesus Christ himself threw the money changers out of the temple, but the Church says nothing on this issue and the unethical devaluation of the dollar, resulting inflation and all the sin that comes with it.
What about following the law/Constitution? Both the major candidates have broken the Constitution in their voting records (such as with the Patriot Act and illegal wiretapping, etc.). Are we supposed to support that sin?
What about the issues of community service such as health care and education? Should we as Catholics support these issues? Of course, but should we be supporting it when to achieve it we have to tax people- take from one person to give to another? Isn’t that stealing? How is that a service? I’m for doing the right thing, but I believe in order for it to be the right thing, one as an individual must make the choice/sacrifice. We all, especially as Catholics, have an individual responsibility to serve and help each other/the community, but that in no way means we should be advocating bigger, more tyrannical, corrupt, and incompetent government to be doing it for us.
Excuse me, but wasn’t it
