A fat lot of good a gold eagle is going to do me at Safeway

so just out of curiosity- have we decided on an amount of cash we should all have on hand? (in addition to gold, canned foods, etc etc) What amount of cash should we have on hand at any given time during all of this instability? Is there a formula? x per household member x 3 weeks etc?

This is my first depression

so i guess what im asking is what to expect. prices spike, supplies shrink, cash inaccessible- what order do these things happen in? Sounds like an obvious question- but what will it look like when the pinch REALLY comes?

That's why you should buy

That's why you should buy the food now with your FRNs, and worry about gold when you have that squared away first.

Since you cannot have too much food, I'm not sure why you should choose cash on hand over food stores. We're due for a new round of hyperinflation within weeks.

In addition to food

Don't forget the other "necessary" staples like toilet paper, sanitary supplies, toothpaste etc. I am sure those things will also skyrocket!

They'll skyrocket, plus they would never have any "expiration dates", so they would be good to buy.

Water and food should always come first, though.

well in less than 6 weeks ill be in Australia for 6 mos

I have enough food pretty much to last me- and I just feel comfy having $500 cash on hand- for petrol mainly i guess. Seems surreal to think that I may decide to go see a movie on a day where the cash machines are frozen and the stores wont give cash back. Any predictions of what life in these United States will look like in 5-6 weeks?- I want to leave my family members with some solid advice.

How cute -- "petrol".

In my house, it is still called "gas". I've even converted my Oztraylian.

If you happen to fly Brisbane-Perth, let me know and I'll come and say "hi".

Go by my old house in Subiaco. I sure do miss it. Good memories in Perth.

Have a great time. Feel free to email me anytime -- just add (at) mac.com to my username.

Life in America will look

Life in America will look impoverished. We're in a continuing market crash that, when it finally hits bottom, will probably topple businesses, small and large, like falling dominoes. Then will come the inevitable hyperinflation tsunami. That's when it will get nasty. Buying food should be done in preparation for that.

I don't think the dire predictions about martial law will come true, except perhaps in inner city areas.

I agree with you about the extent of martial law

The wilding and looting will be primarily in the inner cities- I really hope that they band together and support each other. "Honest crimes" cant help but to increase to some degree as people act out of character to provide for their families- but I dont see the govt waging a conventional war on us to the extent that some beleive. The global nature of this mess kind of keeps us guessing - I suppose it may or may not hasten things. So you think it will be something along the lines of :"McDonalds-ok, Burger King -ok, Carl's Diner-closed, Cricket & Sprint-ok (but T-mobile sends you the bill now) . 2 jobs, less leisure time etc.

Actually I'm thinking more

Actually I'm thinking more like:

"Wal-Mart-ok, Burger King-closed, McDonalds-ok, Starbucks-closed, Subway-closed, Albertsons-closed, PETCO-closed, Jack In the Box-ok, Linens and Things-closed, Red Lobster-closed, Big Lots-ok, Macaroni Grill-closed, Ruby Tuesday-closed, Bennigan's-closed, the local movie theater-closed, Lowe's-ok, Home Depot-closed, Whataburger-ok, Dairy Queen-closed, Red Robin-closed, most indoor shopping malls-closed, Tuesday Morning-closed, Kohl's-closed, Dollar General-ok, Circuit City-closed, Barnes & Noble-closed, Safeway-ok, Trader Joe's-closed, Wild Oats/Whole Foods-closed, Bed, Bath, & Beyond-closed, PierOne Imports-closed, most truck stops-ok, Krispy Kreme-closed, The Outlet Malls-closed, Blockbuster Video-closed, Papa Johns-closed, Steak n Shake-closed, Big Boy-closed, Waffle House-closed, Shoney's-ok, Golden Corral-closed, Long John Silver's-closed, Denny's-ok, Johnny Carino's-closed, Olive Garden-closed"...etc.

In other words, I expect the majority of chain restaurants and corporate stores in America to go bankrupt or massively downsize their number of open locations (mostly the latter). Since consumer economy is all America has that isn't outsourced, and it's our driving force, if I'm right, that's not good news, and there will be massive unemployment.

Don't say that!

I live in the inner city!

I imagine its really hard to store food supplies etc

hard to be prepared. Do you have friends and neighbors you can band with? Neighborhood watch meetings etc?- Dosnt have to be anything major- just added contacts to your phone so theres someone to call for whatever reason that lives right close.

The best bet here might be to have a contingency plan of staying with a rural relative, at least one good handgun, a "bug out bag", and a motorcycle.

"bug out bag"- by that you mean a ready made duffel bag of stuff

that can just be grabbed at a moments notice containing a refill of your meds, a few food items etc that you absolutely need to get by in a worse case scenario?

New Hampshire and Ecuador.

Just you wait.

Methinks that will change.
