Has anyone taken apart the digital signal boxes?

Any spyware enclosed?

As an amateur radio operator I would say yes and no!

I can say that the cable boxes can for sure have the ability to spy in some form. The transmitting power need to feed back through the cable line to the amplifier on the telephone pole would not need to be that strong. However in the case of the digital over the air converter boxes or digital TVs I would think not. You would need 75 to 100 plus watts of transmitting power to go the distance back to a TV station to pick it up and hear it. That would require a heat sink pretty big that would be hard to hide. A short burst on a burst transmitter might not need the big heat sink, but over land radio wave propagation requires 1.5 to 2 watts per mile in distance from the receiving station with good tuned transmission line and a good antenna at the home or apartment.

For a satellite to receive the signal a short burst on a burst transmitter would still need 75 to 100 plus watts with the antenna pointed at the sky tracking the satellite.

1/8 to 1/4 of the time I don't even have a signal strong enough from a 50,000 watt TV station to have a picture from them 75 miles away.

Yeah

Yeah... I've taken apart several, but never reversed any of the firmware. Its too big a task for as loaded down as my schedule is.

As best I can tell, the Scientific Atlanta boxes do not have support for things like cameras, but I can't say for sure.

But if the question is "Are they watching what I watch", the answer is yes. They would be foolish not to collect that data.

Additionally, the boxes will turn off if there is no input from the remote control every few hours or so.

My Shelfari page

Probably just a coincidence that Time Warners logo

is the "all seeing eye."
Alex Jones supposedly had a guy that was a tech for them, talk about the cable boxes having microphones several years ago.

I wouldn't be so quick to think that they weren't capable of spying on you.
Some folks just still don't get it.

true......

anything is possible in this day and age, but selling you something that isn't what it is or hides something else can cross some legal lines.
Cell phones are being used to eavesdrop but those are laws we saw pass before our eyes, no secret there!
The FCC would have to put a label saying there is a microphone type device or special code indicating so.
Even the military would have to have the FCC tag on communications equipment.

Well I sorry to say but.....

Well I sorry to say but your phone is used all the time that way! I have information from a county shrift deputy that back in the 1990's he used a system that could count the number of people in a room by hearing their hart beats over a phone that was hung up. I think with the cell phones it would make it even simpler.

FYI......

I happen to fix a few televisions in my day especially in the military in Iraq, and you could basically see what is inside when you open them.
Cables don't matter, whether it be coaxial or Fiber Optics, they can still transmit data, to and from, like your phone, which is a more primitive use of cabling. You can hear someone and you can talk them.
And if you guys are wondering if they can put in a camera or microphone, then guess what, you will be told,.......... because FCC regs have a guidance for all electronic devices in this country and we will find out if they put anything in them than the obvious workings of a tv.
A converter box itself has to have the same regs.
Also, asking your cable guy or calling your service provider about it doesn't hurt, and they will tell you that they cannot do that.
They will probably collect the data about what you watch and at what times, so there is some privacy issues there, but RFID is not CHEAP!!!!!
To expensive for the masses and technologies!
When you hear about the military getting RFID's put in in all there personnel than you should start to worry. I had a friend who was in a program called "Blue Force Tracker" and they used them on spec ops, certain materials, certain cargo, and it worked ok, not great but they wanted it better.
So rest assured, as a former electronics tech in the Corps, this is not going to happen without our knowledge, and if there is anything going down, I know people and I will be the first to let you guys know to spread the word!

RFID is not cheap, but

when dealing with people that control the currency and can make a digital entry and create all the currency they want to have, is the cost really important? I am also concerned with the rapid pace of development in these devices. Of interest to me was an article I read in the early summer of 2007 that an RFID chip with a device that could provide satellite tracking had been developed that was about the size of a pace maker battery and could be implanted. Their prognosis was that they could develop the device down to the size of an injectable implant within 2-6 years. Their are many curious developments that are converging to a nexus on many levels. This is just one of them.

actually they have them down to

almost the size of sand now. They can even be put in the tags of your clothing and in the soles of your shoes. They can make one tiny chip for 3 cents now in China so the receiver is cheap it's the amplification of the reader that is expencive but having a booster in every house will fix most of that. The boxes that go on your tv will pick up the signal and then send it to Cell phone towers and then it will be amplified again they have quite a few ways of using the technology.

Meek

My cable guy (Time Warner) said the reason for the digital is so they can have a certain band width dedicated to emergency band only. No interruptions from CB's, ham radio, police scanners etc.

(I am not a technical person) I believe this will be used for emergency broadcasting and population/mind control.

I stopped watching television a year ago

Is it true that rupport murdoch owns 34% of direct tv?

Actually I don't think you should be looking for a camera

I believe what you should be looking for is a device that will amplify RFID fequency. Once they put one of these in every house in America they will have built a nation wide antinna. It will make small RFID chips able to be amplified for satilites reception. Welcome to the surge technology. This is the technology they used in the surge in Iraq if they pick up your thermal image and it does not cross referance with a RFID card your a dead man. Its a tracking system for the entire world. The funny thing is people are paying to equip their own master.

15 He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast , that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.

Who is your provider?

Who is your provider?

And just out of curiosity... What would your digital cable box be 'spying' on?

They don't need to spy on your internet traffic... AT&T already does that for the Gov't.

FOX may have some sort of tracking so they can determine if you are watching American Idol or not....

M&M

I'm using a cable modem and information flows both to and from my computer. Another length of cable connects to my digital box/tv. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch to believe that digital tv and receiver is bi-directional too. Especially since the govt insists everyone convert to digital now.

they are not putting cameras in tv's yet. my friends have a shop full of tv's in for repair. they assure me it is not possible or bieng done yet.

Coaxial cable is a cable

Coaxial cable is a cable consisting of an inner conductor, surrounded by a tubular insulating layer typically made from a flexible material with a high dielectric constant, all of which is then surrounded by another conductive layer (typically of fine woven wire for flexibility, or of a thin metallic foil),.....
